Falls are a leading cause of injury-related visitsto the emergency department and a major cause ofaccidental death for people in this age group. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control, more than25,000 older adults died in 2013 from fall-relatedinjuries. And that number is growing each year.

Hip fracture is the most common injurysustained by the elderly when they fall. In fact, theAmerican Academy of Family Physicians estimates thatfalls in the older adult population will result in hipfractures approximately 90 percent of the time. And,people age 75 or older who fall are four to five timesmore likely to be admitted to a long term care facility.

These are just some of the facts relating to falls andinjury among our aging population. However, falling isnot a normal part of aging. Falls may be attributed tobalance disorders, medications and/or an unsafeenvironment. It is important to know that there aresteps which can be taken to reduce the risk of fallsincluding talking to your physician about any balanceissues you may be experiencing.

Join the UH Geauga Community Outreachteam and the UH Geauga Rehabilitation Servicesdepartment in the month of August for a presentationon falls prevention at each of the county senior centers.Balance screenings will also be provided at eachsession.

FALL PREVENTIONOne out of three adults 65 and over will fall each year.

MEET KRISTEN BIBBY, THE DEPARTMENT ON AGING’S HOME DELIVERED MEALS AND VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR.I started my position at the Department on Aging in April of 2015. Previously, I was employed in skilled

nursing and rehabilitation as an activities director where I was able to work with patients as well as volunteersin the community. I came to the GDA with 5 years of experience working with seniors and I’m looking forwardto the impact I can making in Geauga’s community through Home Delivered Meals and Volunteeropportunities.Geauga County is a beautiful community of caring and compassionate residents. I’m reallylooking forward to working with this community as well as the community at the Department on Aging. I’veseen the staff at GDA impact our seniors in such a positive way and I’m very excited to be a part of this team.

I have always felt a strong connection with seniors. As a child, I spent a lot of time with my Great-AuntThelma and Great-Uncle Eddie. My Uncle Eddie was one of the smartest men I’ve ever known. If ever I had a question for aschool project, I could ask him. He had his entire encyclopedia memorized. My Aunt Thelma loved animals and nature andalways encouraged me to follow my dreams. She made it a point to always let me know when she saw an article about me inthe local newspaper, so I know she would be very proud of the work I’m doing with seniors today.I grew up in a very small township in Lorain county called Columbia Station. After graduating high school, I moved to Boston, MAfor college at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA from 2004 to 2008. Upon completion of my Music Therapist Degree, I did6 months of internship at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and Manor Care Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in MayfieldHeights, where I discovered my passion in working with seniors. I hope to someday further my education by obtaining mymaster’s degree.

The best part of the day is when I get to see our HDM volunteers as they pick up their meal routes. We have such a wonderfulgroup of dedicated, kind and caring volunteers who deliver to the frailest members of our community: rain, shine, snow andotherwise. In my free time I enjoy playing music. I sing and play guitar, piano and flute. I also have a passion for cooking andlike to make creative dishes. My specialty is cheesecakes. Since returning to Ohio, I have lived in Strongsville and Bedford andnow call Streetsboro home.
