WOW! It is August and the summer is hot and humid…did I say rain everyday? Well, August is our eighth month of the year utilizing our current calendar…it was named Sextilis which is Latin for sixth… it was the sixth month in the Roman calendar, later renamed August after Augustus Caesar… remember July is named after Julius. August is a month of many Irish battles including the 1st battle of Curlew Pass and Dugan’s Hill. August is national immuniza-tion month (get your shots), national water quality month, national goat cheese month, and national happiness happens month.

August is also “termite tenting and eradicating month” at CYC. It will also be for celebrating the completion of the painting of our building. July and August kept the staff busy with all the improvements. Great job team.

We will have the first ever Dinghy Poker Run to be held in August…can you say storms and lightning? Bet-ter to play it safe. There will be a Rock the Dock party, Hurricane party as we empty the refrigerators and freezers in the kitchen, and yes our normal fun every night at CYC. Don’t forget that August 23 is the an-nual Turnabout party for our staff. We need volunteers.

July was an anniversary month for 3 VIPs at CYC. Virginia Vollenweider celebrated her third year with us and Dan and Michelle Geis celebrated five years with CYC. Congratulations to all three.

I am sure you have seen all of the young sailors around the club. Please take the time to say hello and welcome the parents, who are potential members. Fa-ther Bob has full classes and the graduation ceremonies are very nice; come visit. The Cruisers have been busy and are planning several trips for the fall. Yachting is planning for several regattas in September and October and will need volunteers. All of the committees/clubs are working their summer schedules. That gives you more time to be at the club.

Your club is operating very well; the financials are good and the member usage is high which shows you like dining and visiting with friends at CYC. But your club does need your help. We need more members. If we could keep our current membership numbers and add 20 new members before Change of Watch, your club would be in fantastic shape. Not a steep hill to climb, just a little knoll. Talk to your friends and neigh-bors and bring them to visit.

That’s it for August. Have a great month.

August is gOing to be a great month on the docks. So come on down, where all the fun is!

Keeping things Cool (And Clean)

The majority of marine air-condition-ers don’t require a whole lot of maintenance, but there are a few little things you can do to keep the unit (or units) on your boat blowing cool, clean air, even if you’ve got an otherwise healthy system. It’s no secret that sludge, crud, and other forms of accumulation may occasionally build up in the drain pan under a given air-conditioning unit. The darn stuff tends to turn odiferous, at least in the long term, and can also clog up the pan’s drain, resulting in an overflow that can run the gamut from inconvenient to catastrophic.

How do you easily and efficiently prevent such a thing from happening? Simply stop by your nearest hardware store or outlet and purchase some tablets – they are usu-ally stowed under the heading: Condensate Pan Treatment – specifically formulated to keep your drain pans clean and working properly. There are many variations on the theme from many manufacturers, but Nu-Calgon’s PurCool (www.nucalgon.com/products/clenair/purcool-tablets) is a reputable product. By all reports, one tablet will keep a 5-ton air-conditioning unit clean and odor-free for up to 3 months. Don’t forget to read the accompanying directions, especially if you go with a different product.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

ARe YOu uP FOR A CHALLENGE? I hope so because we are RAPIDLY approaching the start of our fall regatta season! The season kicks off in October with the CLEARWATER CHALLENGE. This race is a West Florida Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (WFPHRF) Gulf Region Boat of the Year (BOTY) event (isn’t THAT a mouthful!). And, because we did not have enough fun in the last race, this race will be a two-day event scheduled for Saturday, October 31 – Sunday, November 1. So, I hope you will plan to participate either in the regatta or as a member of the Race Committee.

In preparation for the fall regattas, we will be holding a Race Committee 101 class for those of you who would like to learn about participating in the Race Committee activities. The first class will be held at CYC on Octo-ber 3, which will run from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and will include the AMAZING cold cut buffet. A second class will be held in January, just prior to the winter races.

Our fall regatta schedule kicks off after the Dunedin Boat Club holds their Dunedin Cup Race on September 26th. So, be sure to check out our full schedule for the upcoming season:

If you are looking for a way to GET OUT ON THE WATER, don’t forget the Beer Can Races scheduled for this month! The FINAL two races for the Summer Se-ries will be on Saturdays the 8th and 22nd starting at 1:30 p.m. All boats and crew are WELCOME! So, if you have a boat, bring it. And if you don’t, just show up and crew on someone else’s. Please contact PC Tish Wold if you would like to participate in Beer Can Racing.

We need your help both on the water and on land during the regattas. I encourage everyone to attend the Yachting Committee meetings, which are on the third Tuesday of the month, always the Tuesday before the Board meeting. So, come and be a part of the EXCITEMENT!

I look forward to seeing you at the club and on the water!

Pig Roast: A New CYC Tradition?COnsideRing the Southern roots of CYC’s flag (Commodore Milam is from South Carolina, Vice Commodore Cardosi is from Memphis and Rear Commodore Proefke is a UF Gator), having a pig roast on our docks seems like a most natural occur-rence. Although pig roasts are common in the Caribbean, where so much of our local flavors come from, they’ve been a tradition from Virginia through the Florida Panhandle and on over to Louisiana for 200 years. Even George Washington was known to enjoy these succulent roastings, and oh, boy, just thinking about the Cajun cochon de lait will get your mouth watering. Chef John – a Yankee, yet! – served up a beautiful feast that did us proud. Looks like CYC has a new tradition in the making! Thanks, Boys!

CYC 2015 Summer Youth Basic Sailing Camp be-gan Monday 13 July and we are looking forward to four weeks of fun, learning, and many great days under sail. Our leadership team, youth and adult, have prepared themselves well and we are ready for the challenge of serving the campers who have enrolled in the program.

Our classes are VERY full but our team members are motivated, our boats and equipment are in great shape, and thanks to Tom Brusini, Lori and Dan, we know we

have a great shore-side support team ready to help ensure our success.

As always, the Club grounds will be very busy during sailing camp and therefore we encourage CYC members to stop by and meet the parents and kids. Give them a big welcome and cheer them

on…you never know: Some of those families might be so impressed with the facilities and friendly CYC members that they will want to become Club members.

I look forward to seeing many of you on the docks dur-ing sailing camp and especially for our graduation days – the next one is Friday, August 7.

Wishing you “fair winds and many blessings,”[email protected]

better name for them! Don’t forget our November 11 Boatique and Fashion

Show with a Bobbles, Bangles & Beads section, and our biennial Yard Sale on the Dock on March 5, 2016. Both of these events count on you to donate items which can be sold and provide further gifts to CYC – and of course, give you a chance to do a little local shopping too!

We are always looking for new ideas for programs for the coming season, so please give some thought to the kinds of things you would enjoy, and let me or Terri Freiberg ([email protected]) know!

Hope to see everyone soon. Keep cool ladies!

hellO lAdies!Just because we don’t have any formal Board meetings or

luncheons during the summer, we still gather every Wednes-day morning for conversation and games, etc., and then stay on for lunch. Come join us in the Gulls Nest any Wednes-day at 10:30 – or maybe 10:45? (We aren’t always on time in the summer…) We’ve been playing dominos – specifically “Chicken Foot” most weeks. It’s fun and very easy to learn!

The Gulls are still looking for ladies who would like to get more involved in the group. Our Board elections are coming up in a few months, and we need ladies who would be willing to put in a few hours each month as Gulls secretary, treasurer, vice president, or president. We have a volunteer for treasurer, but that still leaves three openings on the Board. Plus we have several committees that need chairs – Communications, Hospitality, Membership, etc. Actually these aren’t really committees – it’s normally just one person, or maybe two involved in each area. We need a

The Book Club meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Board Room.

All members and their guests are welcome to join. After our book discussion, many of us stay for dinner. We’d love for you to join us. Please call Virginia at 447-6000 for reservations. You do not have to read the book to join and listen. Our discussions are stimulating and fun. If you enjoy reading, this is the place to be!

All books are predetermined by the members prior to discussion. Our upcoming meetings will feature the following selections:

JulY WAs A great month for entertainment, fun and the start of summer projects. July 4th weekend was awesome with Chef John and his team providing a terrific BBQ feast. The club was packed with members and families enjoying the pool, giant water slide, fireworks, sun and festivities.

If you missed our pig roast you missed a great time. There was roasted chicken, pork, ribs and delicious side items for all to enjoy. Hopefully everyone tasted the peas and peanut salad, it was so yummy! JR provided dockside music for all to enjoy. The weather started out really wet and dreary, but the afternoon turned out great, nice breeze and cloud cover kept the dry dock very pleasant. We had a good turn-out. Thank you members!!

On the second Sunday of each month the Club hosts a new-member introduction. GM Tom Brusini does a great job of promoting CYC, but it would be helpful if participants from our Cruisers, Gulls, Bow Chasers, Book Club, Yachting, Board members and other activity groups would come personally to relate the activities of these various groups. Thank you to those that participate now. New members are the lifeline of our club and introducing them to all the club’s activities is very important.

Don’t forget one of our best events of the year is coming August 23 when CYC members host a Turnabout Party for the employees. At this event we switch roles with the staff and we serve them covered dishes made by members and a great BBQ cooked by members, too. For that afternoon the club is closed to our regular members other than those serving and showing how much we appreciate our staff. Virginia will be the contact to discuss what to prepare and bring to avoid duplicates.

Speaking of a few house and grounds things…4 If you haven’t noticed, most of our chairs and chaise lounges by the pool and dry dock have been replaced. 4 We have ordered the stained glass art piece to hang in the new round window in the lobby entrance. It will be installed this month. 4 Cindi Page is the new Ship’s Store captain. Watch for her announcements. Thank you Cindi for taking on this important part of our club. 4 The clubhouse has a new coat of paint and sealer to prevent future leaks. Dan Geis was very busy getting the building ready for paint – a huge chore. 4 The Club will be tented for five days, closing Sunday, Aug. 16 and reopening Fri., Aug. 21. We will have food and drink specials that re-opening weekend so I hope ev-

eryone will come and help us make up the lost revenue. 4 Danielle has hired several new servers. Please be sure to introduce yourself and let Danielle or Tom know how they are doing. As always, fill out the comment cards any time you have suggestions, not just for food or drink. We read each and every comment card at our House and Grounds meeting. 4 Also congratulations go to Dan and Michelle Geis on five years of service to our Club and to Virginia Vollenweider on three years. We appreciate you very much! Thank you!

We get letters and cards from members and guests frequently, and from time to time I would like to share them with you. Recently Bill and Cathy Athanson hosted a Bridesmaid Luncheon at the Club. They wrote to Tom, calling the event a “delight.” They waxed eloquent about the ease of planning the event, the delicious food and the impeccable service.

“The customer service we received was just exception-al,” the Athansons wrote, “and we could not have been more pleased. Thank you for your outstanding leader-ship and service.”

How about that? Welcome to Clearwater Yacht Club, where we care about you.

OuR CRuise to the Sarasota Yacht Club was attended by four boats. Our weekend was spent biking, shopping at Saint Armands Circle, cooling off in the pool, followed by a wonderful docktail party with pulled pork and all the fixings, and finally din-ner at the Sarasota Yacht Club. Thanks to Gordy and Connie Maynard for hosting. Some of us extended our weekend with visits to Bird Key, the Field Club and Bradenton Yacht Club, all of which provided a hot but relaxing weekend.

Our next cruise is to Bradenton Yacht Club on August 14th and we have 8-10 slips available. The club has a great pool surrounded by a covered lounge area, new Tiki Bar and upgraded bathrooms and dining room. If you like to bike they have 10 new bikes for your plea-sure. I have arranged a tour of the Marlow Boat facility. We need a host since Arline and I will not be able to attend. If you can help, please call us at 727-365-9653.

Many of us have a clear vision of our retirement years. Yet, a

surprising number of people have no idea how they’ll turn that

vision into reality. The fact is today’s retirement takes more

than savings and Social Security. It requires a financial plan

that addresses your needs, wants and how you’ll pay for them.

That’s where I can help. Together, we’ll create a plan to help

fund the retirement you envision. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

the lAtin JAzz party on June 27th was well attended and everyone had a great time. Chef John and the galley crew did an awesome job with the mojo pork, chicken and yellow rice, fried plantains and flan for dessert.

July 4th brought a fun group of members out for the celebration and fireworks.

CYC sponsored a pig roast on July 12th with 50 to 60 of our great members in attendance. It was a fun event and along with roasting the pig, Chef John and crew prepared some killer bar-b-que ribs, baked chicken and, get this, fried cookie dough for dessert!

The annual Dinghy Poker Run has been rescheduled to August 1st and, by the time you read this, our next dock party will have come and gone with Razed by Wolves en-tertaining again on July 25th. I will report on the success of these events in the next issue of the Compass.

We have many parties on the schedule over the next few months, so watch the Compass and your email for details. The list includes the Hurricane Party, White Party, Country/West-ern, Labor Day weekend, Halloween, and more dock parties. Please contact me or Tom if you have a party theme you are interested in hosting and we will help you schedule and plan it.

Enjoy the summer!

Meet the staff and their families and help them enjoy a fun day on our docks!the MeMBeRshiP Committee

is looking forward to an exciting August! We had a great turnout at the new member breakfast on July 12th. A good time was had by all, and the new members are enthusias-tic about everything the club has to offer.

We will be hosting an event for our partici-pants in the Summer Membership Program on Friday, August 14th at 6:00 pm in the Grill Room. Plan to attend and then stay for dinner and entertainment in the Main Dining Room.

Our ongoing Refer-a-Friend Membership Program is still in place and now is a great time to encourage your friends to join the club (so you can stop having to pay their bar tab when they come visit!). We are always looking forward to meeting your friends and welcoming them to your club.

The next Membership Committee meeting will be at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, August 5th. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to hearing your ideas about how we can grow the membership of the club.

See you at the club!

hOW ABOut all the new faces around the club? Wow – we’ve got so many new faces here, we’re going to need more pineapple table flags! To those that joined on their own, and those that were referred by a friend, WELCOME ABOARD! To our current members, when you see a pineapple flag, walk over and introduce yourself, or ask me and I’d be glad to introduce you!

Thanks for a good July! We had a

great time with the Independence Day party – I think a new record was set for the egg toss on the board-walk…65 feet! I want to thank all the participants (of all ages!) who

helped make these games fun. One of the favorite games is the coin toss in the pool…you should see the look on the little faces when they count their coins – priceless!

How about these great dock par-

ties? August or not, we don’t seem to slow down…and that’s a good thing! As you know by now, we rescheduled the Dinghy Poker Run for Saturday, August 1st – Mother Nature decided to rain on our pa-rade back in July. Look for photos of the craziness in the next Compass.

Hurricane Shutdown Party! As you

may know, we’re having the building tented on August 17th, so we’ve de-

cided to host a party on Saturday, August 15th! Not sure yet if it’ll be upstairs or down, but no mat-ter where it is, I know we’ll have fun! Chef John will be cleaning out the coolers, so you just know the menu will vary from hour to hour. We’ll announce the reopen-ing date for you soon; it will likely be Friday, August 21st.
