Workshop Objectives

Participants will:

1. Build confidence in speaking publicly

2. Practice body language and vocal delivery

3. Practice giving an impromptu speech using the “5 Magic Phrases” technique

Vocal Delivery

1. Volume – loud or quiet

2. Pitch – high or low sounding

3. Pace – speaking quickly or slowly

4. Tone – the mood set by your voice (e.g. light-hearted and cheerful, or solemn and somber)

Body Language1. Posture – Aligned, natural arms and hands

2. Gestures – Use for emphasis

3. Movement – Move naturally, avoid standing stock still, walk around a bit

4. Facial Expressions – appropriate to the occasion, don’t “freeze” in one expression

5. Eye Contact – brief eye contact with many people; don’t fixate, don’t look past people

1. Thinking – What is the most important thing you want the audience to think about?

2. Feelings – What is the most important thing you want the audience to feel?

3. Actions – What do you want the audience to do?

1. Greeting

2. State the event

3. Establish common ground

4. Who are you and why are you speaking?

5. Call for action
