DOG DAY AFTERNOON (1975) Dir. Sidney Lumet. Based on the true story of a Brooklyn bank robbery gone wrong, Lumet’s Oscar-nominated film is one of the all-time great New York movies, one of the best examples of 70’s gritty populism and one of the funniest, most tense and ultimately heartbreaking experiences you’ll have in a theater.“Beautifully acted by performers who appear to have grown up on the city’s sidewalks in the heat and hopelessness of an endless midsummer.” —NY Times
THE DOG (2014) Dirs. Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren. An intimate portrait of the vivacious John “The Dog” Wojtowicz, the inspiration behind Al Pacino’s character in “Dog Day Afternoon.” Interweaving extraordinary archival footage and 70’s era interviews, “The Dog” captures the many sides of Wojtowicz’s larger-than-life persona: lover, husband, soldier, activist, mama’s boy and bank robber.“The real story behind ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ is even wilder.”—Bloomberg
