Campus CharacteristicsDetermining where to attend

college is a big decision that can takemonths, sometimes years, forstudents to make. Several factorsweigh into the decision-makingprocess such as location, cost andprograms offered. As colleges acrossthe country welcome new classes offreshmen to campus this month, learna few facts that distinguish theseschools from the rest:

Oldest. Harvard University is theoldest institution of higher learning inthe United States. Established in1636, the college has been sendingscholarly graduates out into the worldfor more than three centuries.

Priciest. According to Forbes.com,the most expensive price tag for acollege education comes from SarahLawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y.,where students pay a hefty sum of$57,556 for tuition, fees and room andboard for one year.

Most students. During the fall 2010semester, Arizona State Universitytipped the scales for the highestenrollment at an individual four-yearcampus with 58,371 students.

Smallest. CollegeData.com reportsonly 38 students enrolled at theAlaska Bible College in Glennallen,Alaska, making it one of the smallestaccredited colleges in the U.S.

Lights ... Camera ... Campus! In addition to academia, some

college campuses receive recognitionon the silver screen. Here’s a list ofschools that are featured in thefollowing films:

• Berry College: “Sweet HomeAlabama.”

• California Institute ofTechnology: “Legally Blonde.”

• Princeton University: “A BeautifulMind.”

• University of Oregon: NationalLampoon’s “Animal House.”

A Prescription for LaughterLaughter lightens moods, builds

bonds and reduces stress, so it’s goodfor the mind. But evidence is mountingthat laughter is good for the body, too.

Immunity booster. According toMayoClinic.com, negative thoughtscreate chemical reactions in the bodythat may impair the immune system.Positive thoughts, however, releasebrain chemicals that combat stressand possibly prevent illness.

Pain reducer. In one study, researchers found that watching funnymovies lengthened the amount of timeparticipants could keep their hands

submerged in ice water before itbecame painful.

Mental benefits. Regular laughterbuffers against negative emotions thatcan lead to depression.

Heart health. University ofMaryland Medical Center cardiologistMichael Miller says mental stress hasbeen linked to impairment of theendothelium, the protective barrierthat lines the blood vessels. Damageto this lining can “lead to fat andcholesterol buildup in the coronaryarteries and ultimately to a heartattack,” Miller says.

If your funny bone feels out of joint, don’t fret. A sense of humor can becultivated. Miller suggests making adaily effort to add laughter to your life.“We could perhaps read somethinghumorous or watch a funny video andtry to find ways to take ourselves lessseriously,” Miller says.

Cupcakes Take the CakeThey say good things come in

small packages, so it’s no wonder tinycakes have taken the country bystorm. Mind Your SocialMedia Manners

The social media explosion hasdone wonders for keeping people intouch. Long-lost friends can be foundwith a simple search. But Facebookand Twitter are like gigantic, unsupervised playgrounds. Here aresome tips for playing nicely andpolitely:

Business or pleasure? A littleself-promotion is OK—“My book wasjust published,” for example. Butsetting up a Facebook fan page foryourself, and asking your friends to“like” it, is a bit much. Save thehard-core career news forprofessional networking sites suchas LinkedIn.

Self-edit. Your “friends” may loveyou, but most of them don’t care whatyou ate for breakfast.

Be clear. Mysterious statusupdates such as “It is what it is” or “I’mnot going to take this anymore” aremore likely to annoy than intrigue.

Respect others’ privacy. Make sureAunt Peggy doesn’t mind whetherpeople know about her gallbladdersurgery before you start posting aboutit. And just because you haveamazing party pictures doesn’t meanyour friends want others to see them.Ask before “tagging” them in photos.

Watch your timing. Social mediaposts are recorded by time and date.If you’re leaving comments onFacebook or Twitter when you shouldbe watching your friend’s daughter’sdance recital, she’ll probably find out.
