Happy Anniversary to Happy Hallow Children's Camp, Inc., 2011 marks the 60th year of

continual operation for the camp. Founded in 1951, camp continues to serve economically

disadvantaged and certain special needs children primarily from the United Way of Central

Indiana area and what a year we have had.

It is hard to believe that 60 years ago Lilly Endowment Inc. funded a grant in the amount of

$108,000 to purchase a piece of property known as the VonKessler estate of some 700+ acres,

in southeastern Brown County for the purpose of providing a summer camp experience for

boys and girls of school age. “ The new camp was to offer children and their parents and

experience in democratic living; an opportunity to learn more about the natural laws of the

universe; a chance for the child to enjoy adventure with safety; and opportunity to develop

new interests and skills; and experience away from home; healthful, joyous living out of

doors; counseling and guidance by a staff well qualified go give it; and interfaith, interracial

experience; and last but not least, an opportunity to develop values applicable to all

living.” (From: Spotlight, 1951) Things have not changed in the past 60 years and Happy

Hollow has remained intact with the help of community, corporate, and individual supporters.

Highlights of 2011: Rick McClintock, caretaker for the past 15 years retired on Dec. 31, 2010 and is enjoying his retirement days in Columbus, IN. His wit and humor has been missed by many returning campers and staff and we all wish him the best. On February 26, our Annual “Under the Stars Gala”, chaired by Steven Schuld, was the most

successful ever with a net income of just over $71,000 for camper scholarships. Mark your

calendar for February 25, 2012 and plan on attending.

In late March, our newly constructed website was launched and can be visited at

www.happyhollowcamp.net Along with this launch an anonymous donor provided Happy

Hollow with a restricted contribution that enabled us to hire a Marketing/Recruitment

Director and we are pleased to announce that on April 15 Ms. Rene’ Chamberlain accepted

this position.

Summer highlights – Once again one of the major highlights of programs offered to our

campers was the newly constructed High Ropes Course that was anonymously donated to

camp in 2010. Don’t forget this program area is available for group and corporate day use

at a very reasonable cost that includes teambuilding activities and lunch.

Most importantly thanks to all of our donors, volunteers, board of directors, and staff for a

very successful spring that served 980 school campers and a summer program that served

767 campers. In closing, we are looking forward to another 60 years with your support.

Yours in Camping,

Executive Director

Summer Camp 2011

Remember Happy Hollow Children’s Camp with a Year-End Gift Our donors are truly the heart of the support system that sustains our mission—to

give economically disadvantaged children an opportunity to attend a summer camp where they can learn and have fun in a safe, supervised setting.

We count on your generosity all year long, but in these challenging times, your support is even more crucial than ever. Since 1951, more than 33,000 Central Indiana children have made the trip over winding Brown County roads to experience the adventures awaiting them at Happy Hollow. As the summer comes to an end, please consider a year-end gift that will help that legacy endure. Thank you for your kind support and continuing commitment to Happy Hollow.
