Volume 31 August, 1987 No. 8

FROM YOUR PRESIDENT. . . DAVE LOUCKS An important part in the growth of any organization is the proper management and review of funds. In an association such as ours, where annual dues are relatively low and expenses about equal income, it is important that we keep a close eye on where our monies are spent.

As part of our Constitution and By-Laws, a year-end financial report is generated for the benefit and review of all our members. During the course of our last year ending 3-31 -87, I undertook a project to develop a more detailed analysis of NHPA expenses. Since we have five basic areas that generate revenue and associated expenses, I felt each of these should be a separate but integral part of our year-end report. The five areas are: NHPA Regular Account, Game Related Items, News Digest, World Tournament and Sanctioned League. Herewith for your information is the NHPA yearly Financial Report with overall balance sheet and individual fund activities.

HORSESHOE CANADA—ALBERTA—DONNIE ROBERTS On April 24 Donnie Roberts, NHPA Secretary-Treasurer flew to Calgary, Alberta, Canada

at the invitation of Don Griffith and the Alberta Association. On the 24th, 25th and 26th some 30 hours of meetings were held. All aspects of the NHPA & Horseshoe Canada were dis-

cussed with many good ideas shared. Horseshoe Canada is doing a lot of good things that can be useful to the NHPA. The NHPA is doing several things that are of use to Canada. The meetings were well attended by people from Canada.

The hospitality and friendship shown to Donnie was outstanding. The Alberta Association is to be congratulated for arranging this outstanding meeting.

A 20 court Indoor Horseshoe Arena is now constructed in Calgary. It is a lovely building and will host the Canadian Championships in the near future. At the Provincial level Alberta is really on the move and show activities that will help Horseshoe Canada in the future.

The photograph shows many of the people who attended the meetings and is taken inside the new 20 court building. HORSESHOES—HAWAII By Donnie Roberts

We have just issued a charter in Hawaii. A lot of horseshoe activity is taking place there. They have sanctioned clubs, a lot of leagues, and a tremendous number of pitchers.

If anyone plans a trip to Hawaii, please let me know, so that I can send you the names and addresses of pitchers there. They would enjoy a visit from any of us. They are anxious to learn how we pitch.

HORSESHOES IN HAWAII—BY OTTIE W. RENO Our family visited Hawaii the week of May 4-12,1987, so I took the opportunity to pay a visit

to some of Oahu's horseshoe pitchers. Rodney Nahina of Waianae is the chhmpion of the island of Oahu and has served as an officer in more than one club, so I went to his home. Rodney, his lovely wife Ethelwyne and her brother Vince Aquino gave me a genuine horse-shoe pitcher's welcome. They took me to the home of Charles Ahina, President of the Nanakuli Horseshoe Pitchers Club. We were guests at a wedding of pitcher Elroy Wong's daughter Mytilene to Clifford Chillingworth and were treated to an authentic Hawaiian luau complete with the foods native to the island. (See cover picture.)

It was not long until an invitational tournament was organized. The courts were sand courts, constructed perfectly in every detail and the games were set at 21 point cancellation in the interest of time. In doubles competition I was paired with Vice-President Chris Koanui and we came away with four wins and one loss. Other doubles teams we played against were John Dana — Harvey Ahina, Dewey Ching — Rodney Nahina, Charles Ahina — Rachel Ahina, and Herb Amina — Brad Koanui. I must not miss the chance to boast of winning my short encounter with Rodney because he is a fine pitcher and the next match may be his.

Several things were impressive. On Oahu alone there are thirteen horseshoe clubs, some boasting fifty or more members. The other islands have clubs, too. Their courts and playing rules are standard NHPA courts, they have all the books, reading material at hand and know the game thoroughly.

Rodney Nahina and President Charles Ahina are working with the NHPA and with their membership to get an NHPA Charter and I believe the time is near. The reluctance of many members to join the NHPA is no different in Hawaii than it is in any of the other states.

The Hawaiian players have every brand of pitching shoes you will find on the mainland. Their top pitchers are probably averaging in the area of 40% ringers, but all they need to have some sixty percenters is a bit of tournament seasoning. Of course they dream of 70's and 80's, but who doesn't?

Lou Coutu, formerly of New England and Colorado, a veteran of many years in the NHPA, was among the faithful members at Nanakuli. Meeting him was a pleasure. Lou's home is in Honolulu.

My chief reason for contributing this article is that many pitchers have talked for years about the hope of one day being able to plan a vacation in Hawaii which could include a horseshoe tournament. I see no rason why an Hawaiian Open cannot be a reality in the very near future.

Editor, Horseshoe Pitchers Digest National Horseshoe Pitchers Association P.O. Box 1606 Aurora, IL 60507

Dear Mr. Cobb,

I would like some help in locating some people. Our Oklahoma State Association have elected Ralph "Kelly" Spencer and Ralph Randall to the Oklahoma State Hall of Fame. We know that "Kelly" died several years ago, but we do not know what happened to Ralph Randall.

If anyone can tell us how we may contact a relative of either of these two men, we will surely appreciate it. We would like to inform the proper people present to receive the plaque at our annual Awards Banquet.

Sincerely yours,

Jerry Holt Box 27 Medford, OK 73759

Dear Ellis, On page 8 of the June 1987 Digest there was an item from Ken Garner concerning the 1986 World

Tournament. I just want to list the facts involved in that situation to avoid errors in thought among our membership.

It is not the fault of Ken or you as editor that this wrong assumption developed. Ralph Maddox didn't complete the 1986 World competition but this had nothing to do with his shirt. Ralph

dropped out by his own choice due to a severely damaged big toe. It was the worst looking toe I had ever seen. Because such an injury is considered an acceptable reason for dropping out, Ralph was allowed to finish where his record put him and was awarded his prize money. He was not penalized in any way for dropping out due to an injury nor was he penalized in any way for his shirt.

HORSESHOE PITCHING IS ALIVE AND WELL IN LOME, TOGO (Letter below)

The Secretary 20th May, 1987 National Horseshoe Pitchers Association of America 9439 Camp Creek Road Lucasville, OH 45648 USA Dear Sir,

I had the opportunity of watching the Horseshoe Pitching Game recently in Lome, Togo during a short visit to that country.

I was tremendously enthused by the game, and promised myself to set it up and popularise it in Nigeria. Ever since, I have been looking for anywhere in Nigeria where it is played, but unfortunately none yet to the bset of my knowledge.

however, I went to U.S.I.S. in Ibadan where I reside to make inquiries. Unfortunately again, not much information could be gathered from there, other than your address in USA.

I felt relieved for the fact that you will be able to furnish me with all information I may require for developing, and promoting the game in Nigeria.

While I remain till I hear from you, I thank you in anticipation of your assistance in this matter.

Yours faithfully, Mr. Kola Akinpelu West African Batteries Ltd. PMB 5299 Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria

PITCHIN' CONTRASTS By STEWART SNYDER

BIG FRY-LITTLE FRY pitched on the same courts in Fortuna, California's second sanc-tioned horseshoe tournament of the year, May 31,1987. Five champions and a couple dozen so-so pitchers met on rain-fresh courts in what turned out to be a tournament of extremes.

WALTER RAY WILLIAMS, Jr., World Jr. and Sr. Champion several times, pitching hard, "missed one" once in a while; his brother JEFF, 1973 World Jr. Champion, pitching his low shoe didn't quite keep up with Walter Ray; DON TITCOMB, 1960 World Champion, did his best to match the Williamses; SHARON PADDOCK, 1984-85 California State Women's Champion, held her own against the men; BILLIE SUE PENNINGTON, 1986 Northern Cali-fornia Women's Champion, did well as a dark horse pitcher against her opponents.

An "outsider' would assume from this flashy array of champions that lower fry would have no chance at all, but "old-timers" in horseshoes know it's not customary to match champions with lower group pitchers, possibly for fear of an upset where the big one would lose face; an affront to his ego.

These five high pitchers kept to themselves on southmost courts, not to infect lower pitchers with ringer fever, however eager any of them would have been to catch it. Nonethe-less, pitchers at the north end had as much fun as those at the other end, and in one detail both groups were even . . . for every winner there was a loser.
