LONG BEACH—It’s cur-tain time for the Vegas Travel league and the 2008-2009 season gets underway next Monday, August 18, at Cer-ritios Lanes. The league will also bowl the second week, August 25, at Cerritos and then take a Labor Day Bye on Monday, September 1. The return to bowling will be 10 a.m. Monday, September 8, at Keystone .

Remember, NO CHECKS the first two weeks, and the new rule for NO LEAGUE SHORTAGES ALLOWED, except absentees, was ap-proved at the July league meeting.

Alas, we still need a bowl-er to completes teams for Lu Colussi and Alberta Stoute. If none can be found before next week, both teams will have to use blind entering averages of 140 until bowlers can be found. Call me at (562) 423-1567 if you can join, (any av-erage) or know someone who is looking for a league.

We will not be bowling at Cal Bowl or Del Rio this sea-son and have filled in those dates with the existing centers, Fortunately, all sponsorships are filled which adds $800.00 to the already super prize fund and again spotlights more $10,000.00 in position pay off next March. More impor-tantly, league fees are still bar-gain priced at $11. SEE YOU MONDAY AT CERRITOS!

MONTCLAIR — Tony Tan, a quiet, unassuming gentleman let his bowling ball speak loudly at the Bowlium. He was the best, as he won his second ABTA Title in fine style topping a field of 215 bowlers to take home a nice $1,000 to Riverside.

Our return to Bowlium was just great and 215 entrants pro-duced high cut scores of +104 for the men, and +83 for our fine ladies. Due to the nice turnout we had 53 Bowlers make the Semi Finals/Finals. Super seniors added were Art Lindsay, Leo Tartamella, and Dodie Sajonas.

The bowlers took to the floor in the semis. We saw Chris Kelly top the field with a big +135. He would sit out and bowl for the title. John Wei was right behind at +131 so he would enter in the sec-ond round of the finals. It took a big +64 to make the top 16 including the 3 guaranteed women.

Losers in round one were Robert (don’t call me Mo-rales) Mendoza, Ace Chelsea, Dana Le Count, Ada Wong, Jun Cadenas, Emilio Flores and Kris Ordonez. They got checks of $100 in 10-16th places.

Round two saw Ace Cord-ero, John Wei, Je Je Gabriel,

and Vien Tran lose out. They were 6-9th places and $110 each.

Round three heated up with Tony Tang downing a consis-tent Sophia Sy 226-200. Steve Smith got to Kmel “298” Cu-nanan 234-188. Kmel and So-phia were 4th and 5th and $120 each with Tony and Steve to bowl for the right to advance to the title game vs Kelly.

This game again went to Tang as he was smooth, consistent, and got some big breaks as Smith slammed a pocket 9 pin which would have won the match. Steve was 3rd and Tony off to the title game and happily so.

The title game was on and we would have a new cham-pion at the Bowlium. After five frames Tang took a nice lead as Chris opened in frame 3. Tony was clean. Chris then doubled. Tony answered back and doubled but opened in the 8th and had a 19 pin lead. Chris finishing first, couldn’t strike and finished in a 176/227.

Tony opened in the 10th but his 183/234 game was the winner and rightly so.Tony is a great guy and improving on the lanes. He won this one the hard way winning five straight matches to claim the title. We congratulate him fully. Great Bowling Mr. Tang!! It was

well deserved.Nice bowling by Chris

Kelly, who almost got his first title. Also Steven Smith who has one title to his credit.

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Danny Guevarra and Anthony Christianson who tied at +215 for the men and pretty Dana Le Count led the gals at +152. All get paid entries.

The Match Game was matched by a lucky lady, Ja-nine Ditch, who bowled a nice 239 game which was drawn for the $2,055 Pot. We will estimate a $1,700 Match Game this Saturday at Bowl-ing Square.

Match Series worth $566 was Un Matched at 441 so we will go for an estimated $1,100 Match Series this week.

David Dittlinger was last standing up in the 3-6-9 and going for $1,900. He missed on shot 4 so we will go for $2,000 this week. David got a $50 consolation for beer money.

The doubles were topped by “El Presidente” and Chris Kelly at a big 1571 $190 and Danny also was runner up with Cunanan at 1549 $170. We paid a nice 18 places and $1,770 in the doubles.

His winning ball was a Roto Grip Cell, drilled by Monty Mock at Trevi Pro Shop. Robert is a general engineering contracter & has been a NABI member for about 6 months, brought in by Guy Clear. He also likes a game of golf & dedicates this win to his biggest fan, his wife, Cleo.

Our sidepot win-ners were: Steve Schroeder, Shane Schroeder (2) Guy Clear (2) James Doolen (2) Joe Turbow (2) Jay Shackelford, Joseph Ma-this & Tom Jones.

Orange CountyUSBC Award Ceremony

by Joy McGregorThe 2008 Award Ceremony

held this past weekend and hosted by La Habra 300 Bowl was low in attendance but enjoyed by all.

The agenda included instal-lation of our newly elected vice president, Jeff Watson and the following eight directors: Debi Andreff; Gracie Hastings; Ber-tha Lamb; Joy McGregor; Rick Niedermayer; Bud Pinchot; Paul Reynolds and Tim Tyler. All have been elected for a two year term.

The Awards Committee pre-sented great-looking jackets to the winners of our Women’s and Open Tournaments. The winners present took pleasure in receiving their jackets and having their pic-tures taken. The winners NOT in attendance will be presented their jackets in their respective leagues, sans the deserved hoop-la!

And, will the League Officer of the Year please stand up...the award goes to...

PAT SPINK. Pat is the secre-tary of the largest league - “Party Timers” at Linbrook Bowl. Ac-cording to G.M. John Haveles, Pat has managed this 40 team league - that’s 160 bowlers, WOW, for the past 30 years.

Guess she MUST be doin’ somethin’ right!! She was very excited to receive her plaque in-scribed with her achievement and thanked Linbrook for nominating her, the Association for honoring her and to her family and many friends on hand to support and applaud her. She says she dearly loves her secretary job and ALL the bowlers. Congratulations Pat!

After all the presentations, ev-eryone was invited to mingle and enjoy the delicious carrot cake, coffee and yummy ice-cream punch.

The Association would like to thank La Habra 300 Bowl for host-ing this annual affair, the Associa-tion members for volunteering, all those in attendance and, mostly... CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR AWARD WINNERS!!!

Up Your Averageby Rolf Gauger

Instruction to Help Raise Your Scores

More On K.I.S.S.- Simplifying The IntricateSimplifying individual parts of the game will eventually lead

to a simpler, higher scoring whole. That’s why good teacher/coaches will explain not only how to do it, but also why. Neither talent without understanding, nor understanding without physi-cal movement will, by themselves, create a successful player. Yet combining both seems to elude many better bowlers. As a result, they often reach a seemingly impossible to overcome “sticking point”. I often hear, “I’m a 155 and just can’t seem to get past it.” Or from an advanced bowler, “I know I need 225 or better to be a successful PBA player, but I’m just not able to get there, even on the much easier house conditions, so what chance do I have?”

This “sticking point” disease afflicts virtually all levels of bowlers, regardless of their book average, whether amateur or professional!

For one example of this, I quote the acknowledged master of successful simplification in bowling techniques, PBA Hall of Fame coach of the pros John Jowdy; “There’s nothing more im-portant in this game than a free armswing! NOTHING!”

Now, virtually all better bowlers as well as coaches already accept this concept, especially since those who execute such a swing are usually more successful. So why aren’t more bowlers successful in executing such a free, (almost limp) swing? Well, usually it’s because they don’t understand how simple it actually is, so they unintentionally make it complicated. That’s why so many bowlers, at all levels, “muscle” the swing, thereby creating the very problems they’re trying to avoid! So now the question becomes, how to simplify the actual execution of a free arm-swing?

K.I.S.S. To The RescueFirst we must accept the fact that the old saying, “Let the ball

swing your arm rather than making your arm swing the ball” is not just a bunch of impossible talk; it’s true! Let’s also accept that the biggest reason it seems so difficult to execute is that we try too hard to make it happen! Trying too hard to relax causes tense muscle reaction. So instead, try the following:

•The Objective: Whatever style pushaway you use, (and a definite pushaway is critical), it’s important that that pushaway is bigger than your accompanying step. It is critical because if the step is too long, it becomes impossible to allow the ball’s weight to “pendulum” your arm into its backswing…thus forcing muscle power to take over.

•The K.I.S.S.: Checking your ball’s position at the end of the pushaway against how far the foot has stepped is easy; it’s right there in front of you. If you find your pushaway to be shorter than your step, either lengthen the pushaway, shorten the step, or both. Then the ball’s gravity can easily become the swinging force, creating the liquid-like free arm backswing necessary. Simple!

The DownswingOK - Now that your ball has brought you to the top of your

backswing (no help from you, right?) the next critical part…the downswing…begins. Right here is where so many bowlers, even some of the best, often encounter the problem of “muscling” or “yanking” the ball into its downswing. This downward forcing of the ball creates two release destroying problems: First, it causes the bowling shoulder to move laterally, thus pulling the swing out of alignment. Second, it makes it almost impossible, to re-lease the ball at the optimum point, thus robbing you of leverage as well as consistency.

This is why “wait for the ball” is such an important instruc-tion. Coaches tell us to wait for the ball, we tell ourselves to wait for the ball. Yet, in spite of the best intentions, many better bowl-ers will unintentionally pull it down anyway.

Why? Are we stupid, or what? Hardly! There’s a good rea-son and it is this: At the very top of the backswing, for just a split second, the ball loses its gravity and seems weightless. At this instant the body’s automatic muscular reaction is to help that “weightless” ball down! This, obviously, is not a conscious deci-sion. It happens because if gravity is supposed to bring the ball down, and there is no gravity, how can gravity be used?

K.I.S.S. To The RescueAgain, simplification can bail us out! Every human body has

pectoral muscles. There’s one on each side of the chest, stretch-ing from behind the nipple area at an angle up to the shoulder. Here’s how it can help:

•The objective: To find a way to more easily create that “free arm” downswing, thus avoiding muscling the downswing so that “waiting for the ball” at the top of the backswing can become habitual, effortless and consistent.

•The K.I.S.S.: During the last part of the backswing, as the ball nears the top, notice that this pectoral muscle feels like it is stretching out. It is! This muscle behaves something like a rubber band being stretched. What does a stretched rubber band do when you release it? It snaps back, right? So, during your approach, when this “rubber band” stretches out at the top of the backswing, simply allow it’s desire to “snap back” be the force that creates your downswing…with no help from you! So when you practice the technique of “waiting for the ball”, just tell yourself, “Wait for the rubber band.” Now you’ve made the free armswing easy!

(Incidentally, using this rubber band action for your down-swing does not mean you can’t accelerate at the bottom of the swing for added speed. Just be sure never to accelerate down from the top.}

One more important caveat; bending forward from the waist at the release is a definite no-no! A more erect torso not only helps keep the head still during the approach, but also makes it easier to get the arm into a more leveraged release.

Is My Slide Really Working?A few months ago we learned a way to avoid “falling off the

ball” at the release. By slanting the last step so it ends up in front of the other foot, you stay balanced at the line. By slanting that last step with the heel facing inward, you keep the ball’s weight from pulling the body off balance during the release.

Equally important, that “heel in” foot position also prevents the accuracy destroying “open” body turn at the line. It is very important for bowlers to be aware of one critical fact; that turning “toe in” on that last step forces a body/shoulder turn away from the target, while a “heel in” turn allows body and shoulders to remain facing forward! Very important for consistent accuracy! By watching the wrong finishing foot position of many of today’s young high revvers, you can easily see why they end up facing the wall instead of their target…and why most of them can’t con-trol their shots.

The part the slide can play in all this is important, because properly done, the slide not only creates a smoother, more bal-anced finish to the approach, but can also assist in creating a more leveraged release. That’s because it allows the body to get to the line slightly ahead of the ball, which is what modern tim-ing is all about.

K.I.S.S. To The Rescue•The Objective: For those who haven’t yet bothered to de-

velop modern timing with a slide, remember that it is important that the next-to-last step (the power step) must be short.

•The K.I.S.S.: There are two techniques I recommend here. Imagining you have a roller blade on you sliding foot is the first. That way you can push off into your slide from your next to last (power) step with the intention of actually skating, thus lengthen-ing it. So the short power step allows an easier push-off into the slide. This is a worth-while tactic to practice.

•Second, to overcome the fear of fouling, I’ve always taught bowlers to slide to a foul on purpose. If the slide does foul, it’s always easy to either start further back or shorten a step a bit. Simple!

If you have trouble sliding, you can buy a “slide sock” at the pro shop. That allows a more controlled slide than previously possible. New adjustable heels on the latest shoes can even help control your slide more than ever.

The Bottom lineApplying K.I.S.S. to such movements as the above may take

some practice, but you may have noticed that all we’ve done is to apply some mental as well as physical trickery. Changing how you visualize the movements, makes them easier to perform. The stretched rubber band, for instance, is really nothing more than a gimmick to fool the muscles into allowing you to “wait” for the ball. It’s how you think about an intended movement that helps make it easier to perform.

National Deaf Bowling Newsby Connie Marchione

Deaf Travel to Start 49th Season with Meeting at Keystone Lanes

NORWALK—The nation’s first and oldest deaf traveling league, So Calif. Deaf Traveling League is having its 49th sea-son meeting on Sunday August 17 at 1:00 PM at Keystone Bowl. This meeting is to set up teams for the 2008-09 season starting in September. Also It will be about preparing for the 50th anniver-sary which will be next year during the 2009-10 season.

In its 48 years the league has 300 bowlers who had partici-pated for one year or more as a regular bowler or a sub. About one-fourth of the number had deceased and the league is asking those remaining active bowlers to come to this meeting to take part in the 50th anniversary celebration planning.

Unfortunately, the meeting notices were sent to only 60 known to contact and the majority rest has moved with no for-warding addresses.

So the league hopes that others will spread the word to older members about this meeting.

New bowlers with 140 averages or better are welcome to at-tend this meeing.

RESULTS OF 67th PCDBA TOURNAMENT AT BRC DEER CREEK BOWL MAY 25-27

RANCHO CUCAMONGA—The 67th annual Pacific Coast Deaf Bowling Association tournament, hosted by Riverside Si-lent Bowlers with a Route 66 theme, drew 28 teams at Brunswick Deer Creek Bowl last May Memorial Day week-end. Ontario Airport Marroitt Hotel which is in the old Route 66 area served as the headquarters.

The women had their 61st annual PCDWBA tourney in the same place with the men but this writer did not get the results..

SINGLES ENDS WITH NAVARRO AND SWENSON TIED WITH 798 TOTAL

The handicapped events started with all bowlers bowling the singles and doubles events on Friday. At the end, Francisco Na-varro, CA with a starting tournament high game 290 and 209-203 for 702 plus 96 handicap for 798 total and Randy Swenson, CA with 207-215-190 for 612 plus 186 handicap fpr 798 tied for the Singles title. Both split the 1st place $350 and 2nd place $175 for $262,50 each. Third place $150.00 went to Donald Sever. CA for his 226-268-222 for 716plus 63 for 778. Mark Fisser, CA had the high scratch 749 series from 258-234-257 got the high singles scratch pot of $100.00 but his zero handicap placed him 6th $120.00. The money went down to 28place.

COUPLE OF PHIL’S, SANCHEZ & HAWKINS TAKES DOUBLES WITH 1456.

The doubles TITLE AND $700 went to Phil Sanchez (720) & Phil Hawkins (550), CA with 1270 plus 186 for 1456 total. Three pins behind in 2nd place were Frank Sotelo & Navarro, CA with 1198 plus 255 for 1453 for $650.00. Andy Lorenzo, CA & Richard Pennington, NV paired for 1424 to take 3rd place $250.00. Darrell Stogryn (643) & PCDBA President Ed Abaku-moff (704), CA had the high scratch doubles 1347 which got them the high scratch pot of $180.00 and with their 36 handicap 1383 placed 9th for $140.00. Their high doubles game of 492 was tied with Mike Moore & Leroy MacMonagle, CA’s 492. PCDBA V-P Tim Estes, WA had the doubles high 735 series. Doubles prize money went down to 14 places.

HOST RIVERSIDE SILENT BOWLERS & EX-RSB GRABS TEAM TITLE

Last year PCDBA voted to do away with the 5th man and changed from 5-some teams to 4-some teams to get more teams and ease of making doubles. The entries gained just 2 teams more than last year’s 26 at Denver but Denver’s 5-somes has 18 more bowlers. Not a wise decision like having all doubles and singles on Friday.

With the team event on Saturday morning, the host team Riverside Silent Bowlers&ExRSB paced by John McGivney’s 681 and Stephen Scolaro’s 615 along with host chairman How-ard Sultan’s 572 and PCDBA Secretary-Treasurer Ira Krauss 514, made games of 758-849-775 for 2382 plus 459 handicap for 2841 to grab the $1400.00 first place prize.

Lost and Found team took 2nd place $700.00 with its 2190 plus 597 for 2787 and third place $370.00 went to Hammer Time-Angel West #1’s 2243 plus 504/2747. There were 7 place prizes.

Out of money were So Calif. Deaf Bowlers 1 with the high team scratch 2397 but got the high scratch pot of $180.00 and the title winner Riverside Silent Bowlers&ExRSB] s 2383 got them $90.00 extra for 2nd high. Power of One which scored the high team game 882 in its 2380 got $55.00 for 3rd high scratch.

STANSELL WINS ALL-EVENTS TITLE WITH 2225Angel West’s Jeff Stansell came out as the victor of the All-

events title and $200.00 prize with his 646 in team, 556 in singles and 510 in doubles for 1712 plus 413 for 2225, 2 pins ahead of Francisco Navarro. Navarro the singles winner had 605-702-628 for his best 1935 scratch plus 288 for 2223 for 2nd place $100.00. Phil Sanchez placed 3rd with his 1925 plus 288 for 2213. The prizes ran to 11 places.

Timothy Estes, WA had the high scratch 2047 total from his 670-642-735 and with his 63 handicap gave him the last place prize $20.00.

Next week we will see the Pacific Coast Deaf Masters and Senior Masters results.

mistakes against Carolyn, and I feared that miss would cost me even though it happened early in the match,” said Ter-rell-Kearney, who struck on her first ball in the final frame to advance. “It took me a min-ute to regain my composure after that, but thankfully I did. I was just hoping for an oppor-tunity in the 10th frame and it happened.”

Reid moved into the final by defeating Malaysia’s Shalin Zulkifli, 237-180, in the other semifinal. Reid pulled ahead after Zulkifli left the 2-4-10 split in the fourth frame and a pocket 7-10 split in the sixth frame.

“It feels great, just awe-some, and I’m still over-whelmed,” said Reid, who was one of 12 bowlers to earn spots in the PBA Women’s Series through qualifying at the U.S. Women’s Open this week. “Even though I finished second, I still feel like I won. I really came here to make the top 12 for the Women’s Series and everything after that was icing on the cake.”

All of the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and championship match will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by ESPN. The telecasts begin Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. and continue for five consecutive weeks.

WINNETKA — It’s the time of the year when parents ask them-selves, “Where did summer go”? If you have school age children, you’re probably busy getting ready for the new school year. GARDEN GROVE—Jeremy Paulson won his first Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT) championship at AMF Val-ley View on Saturday, August 9, 2008 during our one-day 4-game Beat-the-Board tour-nament. Jeremy bowled in our 12 noon squad and shot games of 269, 228, 218 and 238 with handicap for a series total of 953 and the $500 1st place prize. Jing LeBaquin and Mi-chael Hanken tied for second each shooting a 942 handicap series.

Our newest champion, Jer-emy Paulsen, has been bowl-ing for only about 6 months. Jeremy was using a Gravity Shift drilled by Fred Berger at Brunswick Simi Valley. Jer-emy wanted to thank Fred for drilling his equipment. Jeremy wanted to thank Tiffany Mori-ta for her love and support and for helping him with his game. He also wanted to thank AMF Valley View for hosting the tournament and the ABT Di-rectors and Staff for running an outstanding tournament.

Michaen Hanken was the winner of the optional Senior Sweeper with a 942 handicap series. John Magill, Jr. came in second with a 908 series and Daryl Brandt came in third with a 902 handicap series.

It Pays To Be An ABT Member in Orange County

LAKEWOOD—The Amateur Bowlers Tour in Orange Coun-ty will be introducing a newly developed Bowlers Reward Pro-gram this week at Cal Bowl. This ABT program is currently be-ing used by many of the 22 ABT Divisions across the nation. The Bowling Rewards was developed to give money back in the form of “B R Bucks”. The Bowling Rewards card is similar to the cards that are given out by the casinos in many of today’s gaming establishments. There are three levels of membership available to ABT members and they include the Basic participation level, the Silver rewards level and the Gold rewards level. Each of these levels offers the bowlers B R bucks just for participating in any ABT event. All bowlers who cash in an ABT event will also have a percentage of their winnings added on to their Bowling Rewards card.

ABT will be having a kick-off party on Friday evening from 7 to 9pm at Cal Bowl. All ABT members will receive a raffle ticket. Door prizes include equipment from National Sponsor Storm and Roto-Grip, entries into future ABT entries, and the Grand Prize will be an entry into the 2009 ABT Spring Nationals in Las Vegas. ABT’s National Director, Myron Mitchell, will be on hand to help kick off the Bowling Rewards Program at Cal Bowl. Stop by and meet Myron and ask any questions you may have about the Rewards Program.

Jeremy Paulson Wins ABT Championship at AMF Valley View

John McGill, Jr. was the winner of the Scratch Sweep-er with an 812 series. Tim Walthers came in second with a 755 series.

The Mystery Game Pot game and score were drawn after our final squad. Game #3 was the game drawn. The first chance score of 100 (possibly good for $300) was drawn. Our second chance score (pos-sibly good for $150) was 254. The third chance score (pos-sibly good for $75) was 141. There were no winners. The Mystery Pot is available to all members (Classic and Mas-ters) and only costs $5.

The ABT staff and mem-bership would like to thank the management and staff at AMF Valley View for hosting our tournament. Our next sched-uled event will be Saturday-Sunday August 16-17 at Cal Bowl. Squad times on Satur-day are at 2, 4 and 6pm. There will be one special entry squad on Sunday at 10am. Semi-finals will begin at 12:30. All semi-finalists must check in by 11:30. First place with 100 en-tries will be $1000. First place with full progressive and 100 entries will be $2300. Entry fee is $55. The address for Cal Bowl is 2500 E. Carson in the city of Lakewood. Their phone

number is 562.421.8448. We will also have our

monthly SCRATCH BOWL-ERS TOURNAMENT this weekend. First place for the scratch event is guaranteed at $500. Squad times for this event are also 2, 4 and 6pm on Saturday and 10am on Sunday. This event is open to all non-PBA members. Membership in the ABT is not required for the scratch event. Entry fee for the scratch event is $75.

We will be rolling out the new Bowler’s Reward Pro-gram at our tournament at Cal Bowl on August 16-17. Myron Mitchell, President of ABT Inc., will be at the tour-nament at Cal Bowl to explain the Program and answer any questions you may have.

On Friday night, August 15, we will be hosting an intro-ductory event for the Bowler’s Reward Program at Cal Bowl from 7 to 9pm.

We will have raffle draw-ings for various prizes includ-ing Storm and Rotogrip equip-ment, an entry into a local tournament and an entry into the 2009 Spring Nationals.

Everyone is welcome to come by to learn more about the Bowler’s Reward Pro-gram. We hope to see you at Cal Bowl on August 16-17th!

Brent Bruises The Pins and Burns Some Wood in Rocky Marsh Doubles

by Joy McGregorANAHEIM —Terry Brent was very intent on his game Fri-

day morning and we all know how miserably hot it has been outside but, inside it was “blistering” -- on Terry’s pair of lanes, I mean. He portrays “Joe Cool” OFF the lanes but ON the lanes...he’s a “righties” worst nightmare!! Terry had the left hand side of the lanes all to himself and he “owned it”, stroking 215-287 and 247 for 749 and added 246 to register a HOT 995 set. Terry now sports a 36-game summer average at 229.97 and is the men’s current leader. awesome, Terry!

Mr. “Big-Bad” John Conway bordered on perfection and had everyone’s attention in his first game turning in a 298. Was that a fast eight John? He followed up with a 227 and 201 for 726 and added 196 to post a fine 922.

Smooth-strokin’ E.J. Rogers came to play and his perfor-mance was on par to the tune of 233-232 and 248 for 713 and added 193 to sign his card at 906.

Our featured lady bowler this week is “Hot” Eva Munson and she was in fine form firing consistent games of 223-209-238 and 213 to fashion a very nice 883 set. A fine example of a Hall of Famer in action!!
