HEALTH LITERACY

Internationally, Health Literacy as a concept has been the focus of increased attention over the last couple of decades. Defined as the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health, health literacy is key when developing effective approaches to health services, and public health and health promotion programmes.

This course will provide the participants with a deeper understanding of the evolving concept of health literacy and its application in the design and delivery of health services, understanding and improving the health of populations, and supporting citizens to promote health. Through lectures, discussions and small group work, students will gain practical understanding of ways to develop Health Literacy skills in citizens, patients and health practitioners, how to modify and improve health care systems, how to evaluate the effect of service redesign and how to

use Health Literacy in health promotion. Furthermore, the course will present information on getting funding for Health Literacy research and how to write Health Literacy research for publication.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

• Give an understanding of the evolving concept of Health Literacy, and how it fits within Danish and European Health systems

• Support students to understand health literacy within the context of their own work and that of their organisations

• Give an overview of health literacy levels in Denmark, England and the EU

• Give an understanding of how health literacy skills can be developed in health and community contexts

• Identify potential funders for health literacy research and development
