Fairway Maintenance(Continued from page 40)

A few years back, while treating forcrabgrass with phenyl mercury, we notedthat turf was not seriously affected andpoa annua loss was not great wh n thischemical was applied. This was rallynothing new. But it forcibly show dhowimportant fairway disease control can be.We worked out a practical dosage foreconomy and effect. I have continu d thispractice for several years and my fairwayshave been much improved.

Last year we appli d phenyl mercurysix times, applying it upon the first in-dication of a disease attack in the lastweek of July, again in early August, andmaking four applications in the la t 10days of August when we encountered ourworst diseas weather. Dosage was at1 qt. per acre of 10 per cent material. Thisyields % ozs. of material per 1,000 sq. ft.,or less than the recommend d rate of 1to 13~ ozs. Water in conjunction av ragedabout 75 gals. per acre. We added 3 lbs.per acre of iron sulfphate to the abovemixture to give added color, plant strengthand to combat iron chlorosis, usually prev-alent in hot, wet weather.

Two spray rigs were used in the fungi-cide treatm nt and our 40 acres of fairwayswere hand1 d in about three hours. About10 gals, of chemicals were dilutcd in 3,-000 gals. of water. Material co twasaround $100, cheap in comparison with r -seeding costs when diseas damag d ar ashave to b r paired.

ertilization ProcedureWe go on the theory that fairway have

to be f d lightly and frequently. Thlightest overf eding yi ld exce clip-

pings that can't be practically r mov d.They remain to smother healthy turf. Then, too, overfeeding softens the grass

elf- erviceThe Iiami Shores shop is on the order

of a self- ervice golf department store. Itusually carries an inventory of about 23,-000. Joe is proud of the depth of his clubstock. He says he can provide any weight, swing weight, shaft length and fl . ibilityin men's or women's clubs. The Balmoralinventory runs approximately $11,000.

Joe works seven days and six nights aweek during the busier months. H ordersthoughtfully and turns over his inventoryfaster than most pro shops. He tudieshis customers' buying needs and keepsrecords that give him the score on hisbusiness at any hour. He buys from in-formation instead of by hunch and guess.

He and Jim and members of the staffoft n go into the office at the MiamiShores shop, talk over business problems, think and plan. Jo says the trouble withsome pros who ought to be doing betterat their business is that they are so busythey don't g t (or take) time to think andplan.

Help from enior ChampionThe new shop at Iiami hor shows

what the community thinks of Jim andJoe. Joe got th help of Jim Me Iartin,a retired contractor and the club's niorchampion, in planning a new air-condi-tioned building that i a decided improve-ment in facilities for serving the commun-ity's golf r. McMartin also collaborat dwith Joe in d igning a number of di -play count rs and fixtures.

The n w shop building r quir dar -arrangement of th first and tenth teesand ninth and] 8th gr ens. The plan weretaken to th Miami hor villag man-ager, . Lawton Ic all and h and thevillage council approved the changes.

Pelcher feels that th most glaring faultsof golfers, both men and wom n, r volvearound the pivot. In most cases, the playerdoesn't swing away from the ball correctlyand, as a consequence, his follow throughis poor. If there is a panacea for this, hethinks it is good footwork. At any rate,he strongly recommends practicing to im-prove footwork to about 70 or 75 per centof his players. Along with this, Pelcherpreaches, 'Think more of the swing thanthe hit.' But he doubts if more than oneout of maybe eight persons ever graspsthis cone pt to the e tent that he rallydoes just this. If this were to happen on alarge scale, the Davenport pro maintains, the numb r of good golf rs in this countrywould be gr atly increas d.

If Pelcher has a teaching preference, itis instructing Junior golfers. Like mostadults, he stands amazed at how rapidlykids learn to do something when theyapply thems lves to it. Th rno t am nableage group, in his stimation, embrac s the12 and 13-y ar olds. "Kids of this age,"h points out, "are almost as capable ofimitation and of ab orbing teaching asyounger children. But what makes themreally interesting is that th yare ju t b -ginning to flex muscles that give th m thepower to give th ball a good ride."

managers often, giving them progress re-ports and paying on hi notes. He alwayspaid something on each note befor pay-ment was due.

Sales and cr dit manager of golf com-panies were kept informed of th condi-tion of Benner's busin s. They coop r-ated with him. H ah ays had stockenough to keep selling at high spe d.

In 10 months of pro shop op rations,Benner put his busines on a di countbasis, worked up an impre si e olumof sales for pro shops noted for big stock.of attractive golf merchandi e. He amedan enviable rating on th Dun & Brad-street and Sporting Goods Clearing Hou eCredit records.

Jim MacLaughlin is proud of ]o B n-ner and so are the Miami hores C mem-bers and the community's officials. Thyoung man does them high credit with abusiness performance that indicate thegrowth there will be in pro shop businesswhen business management schooling isapplied by college graduat s who g t intogolf.

has many boosters in our part of thecountry. Most supts. have had good re-sults with it and only a handful, one sales-man tells me, have been hurt by it. I'mone of th handful. I did a great deal ofchecking before I put th blame on thisparticular fungicide for damage done tosome of my greens. I finally came to theconclusion that, due to some kind of chem-ical reaction, the product liberated storednitrogen that caused a lush, tender growththat wilted almost as fast as it gr w. Itwasn't possible to convince the salesmanor his company of this. They maintainedthat it had to be something else, and letit go at that.
