What is Geneva 2020?

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

An umbrella for all programs and organizations that support our youth.

An initiative that finds solutions to the problems facing Geneva’s youth.

A uniting force for all of Geneva behind our schools and our kids.

What we are NOT?

A program. A fundraising initiative. A great idea that will fizzle out.

One person’s vision. Competition. Judgment.

This is our community. These are our kids. This is our future.

Geneva 2020 is the answer. You are the answer. You are Geneva 2020.

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

Geneva 2020 Highlight Reel

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

2011—Geneva 2020 was first conceived around HWS President Mark Gearan’s dining room table with key community members discussing John Kania and Mark Kramer’s 2011 article, “Collective Impact” in the Stanford Social Innovation Review.

2012—HWS became the anchor entity of Geneva 2020.

2013—The Geneva Education Foundation convened after Geneva 2020 conversations uncovered the need for a funding source for the Geneva City School District.

2014—Geneva 2020 became an official partner of the SUNY Cradle to Career Network.

2015—Geneva 2020 is awarded a grant from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, which, along with matching funds from HWS, allows for the hiring of the Geneva 2020 Program Coordinator. In April, there is a community-wide convening for Geneva 2020.

2016—Geneva 2020 became an official StriveTogether member.

Action Teams explained

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

The next phase of the collective impact work will be creating action teams. These teams will focus on outcomes and indicators and will be made up of a diverse group of Geneva representatives with an interest and experience in each area. These networks will eventually include all of these areas:o Kindergarten Readiness

o Literacy

o STEaM

o Graduation Rates

o College Readiness

o Career Readiness

o Attendance

Ownership of This Effort

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

o This is your workgroup.

o The support and resources we have are ours to use as we wish.

o This is not competitive nor judgmental.

o We are in the room to help each other to help our youth.

o The only requirements are that we commit to using:

• Data

• Continuous Improvement

o Trust matters

How an Action Team works

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

• Agree on a charter (how often to meet, process, use of data, use of continuous improvement, outcomes and indicators)

• Prepare data (what data do we need? What data can you offer?)

• Determine outcomes and indicators based on data

• Discuss roles in achieving outcomes and indicators

• Determine new data needs

• Discuss community outreach/support for outcomes and indicators

• Take action!

5 facts about attendance

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

1. Absenteeism and its ill effects start early. One in 10 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent. Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back.

2. By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.

3. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month, and that’s known as chronic absence.

4. The academic impact of missing that much school is the same whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Suspensions also add to lost time in the classroom.

5. Low-income students are four times more likely to be chronically absent than others often for reasons beyond their control, such as unstable housing, unreliable transportation and a lack of access to health care.

Attendance Data: Improving but we have work to do

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

• The challenges of tracking attendance data

• What data do we need to start?• How deep do we need to go?• How well is our current effort

working?

Our strengths

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

o We have already made inroads in improving attendance.

o We have a school district that is on-board and focusing on attendance, but it needs more community support.

o You all are here!
