Edmond Schiitz Obituary

With regret we were informed ofthe passing away of ProfessorEdmond Schùtz, one of Europe'sleading armenologists, andfounding member of the AIEA.Prof. Schùtz was known to manyof us as €u:r amiable person, ahelpful colleague and above allas an insightful and learnedscholar.Born in Budapest, in 1976,

Schùtz studied Hungarian andFinno-Ugric linguistcs as well asInner-Asian Studies with suchfamous scholars as Gombocz,Németh, and Ligeti. His interestin Armenian Studies is related tothese areas; much of his workconcerns Armeno-Kipchak andthe contacts between the Asianworld and Armenia, in the Mon-golian and ll-Khanid periods. He conducted his research ashead of the Altaic ResearchGroup of the Hungarian Acade-my of Science, and from 1962 on-wards regularly lectured at Indi-ana University, Bloomington, with his former co-student DenisSinor. In 1990 Schùtz was elec-ted an ordinary member of theArmenian Academy of Sciences.Schùtz was a gifted armenolo-gist, whose main interest was inhistory and linguistics of theMiddle Armenian period. Hespoke Armenian fluently and inthe years of the cold war heserved as a trait-d'union betweenArmenia and the scholars of the"Western" world. His many pa-pers are gems of learning, open, ing up sources which only aman with his particular wide

erudition was able to access. Hehas remained scientifically ac-tive until the end of his life; hehad given some of his most im-portant work (such as the L4thcentury Rasulid Hexaglot) in printwhen he became 80 yeari. Atthat occasion, the HungarianAcademy honoured him by de-voting an issue of Acta Orientalia(L, D9n to this eminent scholar.Edmond Schûtz's scholarship

will remain with us and froÀtime to time, memories of hiskind personality will make ussmile. His lasting contribution toArmenology has been best ex-pressed by F. Sargissian, whenSchùtz was awarded a distinc-tion of the Armenian Academyin L996: "You have consacrated agreat deal to the education ofnew Armenologists and to theinterest of Armenian Studies allover the world. ... It is due to yourardent work and noble characterthat in Armenia and in widescholarly circles you have be-come a deeply venerated andbeloved personality".A short biography of Edmond

Schûtz by Istvân Vâsâry ap-peared in the Acta OrientaliaAcademiae Scientiarum Hungaricae,Tomus L, 1997; v - vii. Vâsârvalso adds a bibliography

"tEdmond Schùtz, ibid. pp. ix - xii, containing il published items.and 6 items in print. A selectionof Schùtz's work has appearedas Armeno-Turcica (SelectedPaperq),Indiana Univ. Uralic andAltaic Series vol. L64, Blooming-ton Indiana 1.998, xii. 420 pp.

let: ideology is a system of ideaswhich concerns the individual inhis relationships with other men,the society, his past, his future,God (or its substitutes) and des-ti.y.According to Zekiyan, the fa-mous hymn of the birth of thepagan god, Vahagn - going backin its actual form to the pre-Arta-xiad period of Armenian history, but as to its mythical contenÇconcerning specially the fight ofVahagn against the devil, to 'a

logy' was, at that early stage, stillvery close to other Indo-Europe-an beliefs held commonlv withthe Iranians and Indians. Zekt-yan contrasted this early Indo-European trend with the pro-Greek orientation that developedamong the Armenians later. Thispro-Western trend becomes evi-dent during the reign of theArtaxiad dynasty in general andof King Tigran II the Great inparticular. It later manifests itselfin the once widely-held -but un-fortunately useless- belief thatArmenia would only be savedfrom foreign rule if it receiveddirect military assistance fromthe West. Zekiyan argued, at thesame time, that the fourth cen-tury AD Roman historian Am-mianus Marcellinus was one ofthe rare Western authors of anti-quity to understand the impor-tance of Armenia for the West.Zekiyan was more detailed inthe section of his lecture, whichdealt with the contributions ofMesrop Mashtots and MovsesKhorenatsi to the 'definitive' for-mation, in its essential trends, ofa separate Armenian Christian'ideology'.Although this 'ideology' hassince been modified, and newtypologies have emerged, he

. said, its basic understandingsare still with us.Zekiyan described Mashtots asnot only a great religious and in-tellectual figure, but also as agreat political genius, whose mo-tives when inventing a separateArmenian alphabet were bothreligious and deeply ideological.Mashtots was hoping to save the

Armenians from future dangersof assimilation when he attemp-ted to move the issue of a sepa-rate identity from the political tothe cultural level. Had the motiveof creating a new alphabet sim-ply been to facilitate the propa-gation of Christianity, therewould have been no need- accor-ding to Zekiyan- to try to teach itin Byzantine Armenia. Hebrought to the attention of theaudience the fact that even todayArmenians use the metaphor of'soldiers'or of a 'fortress' to indi-cate the function of the letters oftheir alphabet in the life of thepeople.Zekiyan said that Movses Khore-natsi was the best interpreter ofMashtots's ideas and work. Moreover, Khorenatsi also cameup with a new synthesis todefine the Armenian identity. Hetook from the classical Greeksthe idea of "politea" and mergedit with the concept of the unity ofthe ethnos as defined by Philo ofAlexandria. The result Was anew, secular conception of theArmenian ethnos/nation; thisconception is open to religiousfaith, but does not imply it as apre-condition.Zekiyan's lecture was based onfour of his articles, and a recentbook, published in French, Ita-lian, German, and English:1,. Many Diaspo-ran Armenians today feel them-selves more at home in the Dia-spora than in the homeland, butthis should not stop them fromseeking a constructive relation-ship between the homeland andthe Diaspora both now and inthe future. The book isthe first to situate a major aspectof Safavid lran's political econo-ffiy, in the global context ofworld trade and early modernstate-building. Based on Safavid,European and Armenian docu-ments, it demonstrates that theproduction, distribution and ex-port of Iranian silk, Europe'smajor eastern import, was in thehands of deportees from theCaucasus. A focus on the politi-cal and financial ties betweenconverted ghulam administratorsand, the Julfan Armenian mer-chants, brings to light, for thefirst time, a major component ofSafavid lran's planned politicaleconomy through documentingthe link between the mint, thepalace administration and theArmenian silk traders. It shedslight on the central role of localAsian merchants and contribu-

tes to a major debate againstOrientalism and Eurocentrism inthe study of cross-cultural trade.India, Iran, the Ottoman Empireand. Europe are considered toget-her in this global and compara-tive study of Armenian worldtrade based in the Persian capitalof Isfahan, where a study of theIranian context remains central.
