Zonal Mean HDO, 18 Sep 2002, 14 orbits ppmv

Zonal Mean δD, Sep 18th 2002, 14 orbits

HDO/H2O ratio (expressed as δD = permil depletion relative to standard conditions) is sensitive phase change processes

δD is used to study the processes relevant to dehydration (condensation, convective overshooting …) when water passes the tropical tropopause

Conclusions

MIPAS provides a wealth of information on the UTLS with vertical resolution of 4 to 6 km

Tropospheric SF6 is observed to increase by 0.221 pptv/yr well in consistency to in-situ measurements

Water vapour and isotopologues allow to study transport mechanisms of water through the tropical tropopause

CO can be retrieved down to the upper troposphere and provides a tracer for industrial/biomass burning pollution and for troposphere-to-stratosphere exchange

High spatial resolution modes of MIPAS allow to resolve STE events like tropopause folds

Biomass burning has been observed (C2H6, O3, HNO3, PAN) and has been traced back to S-American rainforest and S-African savanna burning

Page 29: Atmospheric processes in the UTLS as seen by MIPASearth.esa.int/workshops/atmos2006/participants/477/pres... · 2018-05-15 · Atmospheric Science Conference, ESA ESRIN, Frascati,

Conclusions / cntd.

Model calculations compare well to MIPAS biomass burning observations except HNO3

PAN and O3 show episodes of N-hemisphere industrial pollution

GHGs in the troposphere can be retrieved with vertical resolution of appr. 4 km

CH4 distribution from MIPAS confirms SCIAMACHY observations of increased CH4 above rainforests

Microphysical properties of cirrus clouds can be retrieved from MIPAS spectra

HNO3 uptake into cirrus clouds will be studied
