WELCOME TO THE 8TH BIENNIAL ATLANTA CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE AND INNOVATION POLICY!
We are pleased that you have made it a priority to attend the Atlanta Conference on Science and Innovation Policy 2019. Thank you in advance for your contributions and participation in this wonderful gathering of researchers from around the world.
This year we celebrate the 8th convening of the Atlanta Conference. It is exciting that our community has grown internationally and expanded the knowledge base for science, technology, and innovation policy. The next three days will feature over 150 presentations reporting the work of more than 200 researchers. Early career researchers will present their work in a lively poster session where they will have the opportunity for meaningful feedback. The conference offers a comprehensive look at the ways science and innovation policies are crafted, managed, and have impacts on our economies, environment, and communities.
We welcome this year the Grantee Conference for the Science of Science and Innovation Policy Program of the U.S. National Science Foundation (SciSIP). The Atlanta Conference and the SciSIP program have grown up together. The first speaker at the first Atlanta Conference was John Marburger, then Presidential Science Advisor, who was introduced as “the patron saint of the Science of Science and Innovation Policy.” He frequently referred to it afterwards as the key professional conference in the field. We welcome SciSIP home to Atlanta, with SciSIP sessions interwoven in the Atlanta Conference and an afternoon workshop the afternoon following the meeting.
In addition to two stimulating panels and a keynoter who is a Georgia Tech public policy alumnus now at Google, our international lineup of presenters and speakers will address issues such as:
• National innovation strategies
• Innovation for sustainable development
• Researcher mobility, within and between countries
• Misconduct and norms
• Open science
• Gender and ethnicity in the science and engineering workforce
Our generous sponsors–Georgia Tech’s Executive Vice President for Research, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, and Clarivate Analytics–make this conference possible. We are thankful for their support. We also thank our cousin conference, the Global Tech Mining Conference, for their continued partnership.
We are confident that you will leave Atlanta with knowledge of new techniques and fresh approaches to address challenges facing the world. Enjoy the conference!
