ATHLETE GUIDE 2

WELCOME TO LURAY DUATHLON!

From the Race DirectorDear Duathlete,

Welcome to the 2nd annual Luray Duathlon in Luray, Virginia. We are excited to have you join us this year for another memorable event! Our elite and top amateur athletes will go head-to-head each day in what will make for exciting races to watch and fast finish times.

Training for the Luray Duathlon requires significant commitment, hard work and sacrifice. All of us at the Luray Triathlon & Duathlon want you to have a positive race experience and will be doing everything possible to help you reach the finish line.

I’d like to personally thank the citizens of the Town of Luray and County of Page for embracing this special event and for being such graceful and accommodating hosts.

I would also like to thank all of the volunteers, businesses, non-profits and race staff who help make this race a fun, safe and welcoming experience for you. Without our team, we simply could not do the event. Please take a second to thank a few of our volunteers on race weekend—they will appreciate it.

Good luck on race day!

THE RACESTHE RUN - 1ST LEG

THE BIKE - 2ND LEG

Please see the course map for your race. If you are doing the Interna-tional, you will do a second loop at the intersection of Hollow Run Rd and Ida Rd. If you are doing the Sprint, you will do only one loop.

The course will be marked with spray chalk arrows and signs at all the turns. Volunteers will point you in the direction of your turn.

Even though there will be police officers and sheriff ’s deputies on the course for your safety, the course is still open to traffic—please BE ALERT and BE CAREFUL!

We recommend that you pre-ride or pre-drive the course prior to race day. Knowing the course is YOUR responsibility.

THE RUN - 3RD LEG

Please see the course map for your race. If you are doing the International, you will be doing a 2x out and back run course. If you are doing the Sprint, you will be doing a single out and back course. Runners should run on the left side of the road at all times.

The run course will have limited vehicle traffic. Volunteers will be on the course to direct runners. Please stay alert and remain aware of your surroundings!

Aid stations will be located at approximately each mile mark. Aid stations will be supplied with water and Hammer Nutrition HEED.

Please be sure to return your timing chip to a volunteer after crossing the finish line.

COURSE CUTOFF TIMES

International cut-off times will be:

RUN BIKE RUN1 hour and 10

minutes after final triathlon wave start.

3 hours and 30 minutes after final

triathlon wave start.

5 hours after final wave triathlon start.

Sprint cut-off times will be:

RUN BIKE RUN50 minutes

after final triathlon wave start.

2 hours and 45 minutes after final

triathlon wave start.

3 hours and 30 minutes after final

triathlon wave start.

Athletes not making each cutoff will be asked to turn in their timing chip.

Finishing the race after the course cutoff time is at the discretion of each athlete, but race support will not longer be provided and the The event holds no responsibility for athlete safety after this point.

This first run leg is on trail. This will include grass surface, crushed stone, dirt trail, and wooden foot bridges. It’s a moderately technical loop around the lake. The International leg is slightly longer using the crushed stone driveway to gain extra mileage before crossing the grass dam. The run is a clockwise direction around the lake and will meet up with the swimmers of the Triathlon just outside of the transition area. The timing mat to end the run and start T1 will be just before you turn into the transition area. On the backside of the lake the dirt trail will be narrow (single track) so please pass with caution and verbal announce-ments to runners you are overtaking. It is recommended that you jockey for position when crossing the grass dam before you arrive at the single track section. Also on the single track section there are two tech-nical spots that will require you to decide how to get around. These two sections are trees growing in the path that you have to swing around or climb over, so please be prepared. We will have signage and volunteers throughout the course that will insure that you navigate correctly.
