Rules for the General Operation Safety

Application

The CHALLENGER 15i/18i Dust is a terminal for the industrial application in explosion-endangered areas of zone 22 (non-conducting dust). The applied EC design test certificate is: BVS 03 E 254

Operation

The CHALLENGER 15i/18i Dust case may not be opened during the operation in explosion-endangered areas of zone 22.

Safety Instructions

The safety instructions here contain information and precaution notes, which have to be followed absolutely for a safe operation under the described conditions. Prior to the use of the device, the operation manual must have been read carefully! In case of doubt (e.g. translation errors) the German operation manual applies. No liability is assumed for any typographical errors or mistakes in this operation manual!! Please contact us directly in case of questions or problems!!

Errors and Illegal Loads

If an affection of the device safety is to be suspected, the operation of the device must be immediately stopped. An inadvertent commissioning has to be avoided. We recommend to send in the device to the manufacturer for a check. The device safety can be endangered, e.g., if: • damages at the case are visible. • the device is exposed to improper loads. • the device has been stored improperly. • the device has suffered form transportation damages. • the device labeling is illegible. • malfunctions occurred. • the permissible limits have been exceeded.

Safety Regulations

The use of the device requires that the user follows the usual safety regulations to exclude a faulty operation of the device.

• Use this device only for the intended purpose. • Faulty or inadmissible use or failure to comply with the instructions in this operation manual voids

the warranty. • The CHALLENGER 15i Dust-FHP or CHALLENGER 18i Dust -FHP may only be operated in zone 22,

according to the explosion identification of the EC design test certificate. • At damages of all kind, which could affect the IP (e.g. ruptures or holes in the membrane

keypad, cleavage of the display screen or damages at the trackball, mouse or chip card reader, the terminal must be immediately taken out of service. Prior to the return to service, the defective components have to be replaced.

• If the components must be replaced, the terminal must be shut down first and then being let cooled down for 30 minutes. Before opening the terminal case, the environment of the terminal must be kept free of dust to void the intrusion of dust into the interior of the device. At the installation of new components, make sure that all seals are in proper conditions and all of them are sealing everywhere properly.

• If the terminal case is to be opened for less than one minute, the environment of the terminal must kept free dust that no dust can intrude into the interior of the case.

• The round jack, which is optionally mounted on the terminal case, must always be closed. This accomplished either with a suitable plug or the corresponding cover cap. Pulling or plugging may only be done at shutdown state. For an additional securing a headless screw must always be secured at the side of the plug.

• The terminal case may only be opened or closed with the intended key. • At closing the terminal case, make sure that all seals are in proper condition and that these are

sealing properly everywhere. • If the seals at the terminal case and its components are impaired the terminal must be

immediately taken out of service. • Foreign devices, which are not approved by the company GeCma, my not be installed into the

terminal case. • Dust densities >5mm must be removed. • All appliances must be connected and operated correctly and properly according to the

applying standards, rules and installation instructions. Prior to the commissioning of the device, make sure that the device is properly installed and the cabling is not damaged.

• The transmitting unit and the power supply and the computer unit must be installed outside the explosion-endangered area.

• The transmitting unit must be directly connected to the PC. Only ServSwitches may be used, which are recommended by the company GeCma Components.

• Reconstructions and changes of the device can affect the explosion protection and are forbidden.

• The device may only be operated in proper and clean condition. • Damages can void the explosion protection. • In addition, make sure that the regulations of the EC design test certificate and other related

and applying standards are followed and kept to! Further on, the generally accepted rules of technology and the national and local safety regulations apply.

• The devices must be operated according to the electrical and other specifications of the electrical instruction manual and the EC design test certificate.

• Prior to the connection, all groundings must be made. • The installation and commissioning may only be carried out by trained personnel, which are

instructed about the applying regulations, standards and rules. • Use only recommended types of cabling. • Never move the data cable. • The maximum environment temperature range for the components is: -10°C <= Ta <=

+50°C. • All other instructions, notes and regulations contained in this operation manual must be followed.

Introduction

The terminal CHALLENGER I Dust *** is an appliance manufactured according to II3D, which is used for operating and visualizing purposes. It may be installed in zone 22 (non-conducting dusts). The terminal is specified for the temperature classes T80°C for 3D (dust). The case is designed and tested according to IP 6x. The environment temperature range is -10°C to +50°C. Substantially the terminal consists of the case CHALLENGER 15i / 18i Dust-FHP and the following modules (see table). Additional components can be installed in the case. Optionally the terminal can be supplied with a key switch, an emergency stop button and a round jack fort he connection of an Ex-capable input device. The terminal is supplied with 24V DC. The terminal is connected via data lines to the transmitting assemblies, which are outside the explosion-endangered area and are directly connected to the PC.

Scope of Application

The CHALLENGER 15i Dust -FMO or CHALLENGER 18i Dust -FMO can be used in all locations, which require the operation and display in an explosion-endangered area.

e.g. with the CHALLENGER 15*-FMO assembly module:

Every software running on an IBM compatible PC with XGA (1024 x 768 Pixel, True Color 32 Bit) can be used.

e. g. with CHALLENGER 18*-FMO assembly module:

Every software running on an IBM compatible PC with SXGA (1280 x 1024 Pixel, True Color 32 Bit) can be used.

Operating Principle

The VGA screen, keyboard and mouse/trackball data are united and transmitted via a data cable to the Challenger I Dust.

There is no special graphics adapter required, but we recommend the use of high-quality adapter cards, because the image quality might be affected otherwise. The connecting line should not be moved.

The specially developed electronics in the transmitting unit and the components allows distances of up to 500m or 325m respectively and more (at lower resolution and refresh frequency).

Features of the Installation Modules

Please refer to the related description/manual for the operating principle, the technical features and the electrical connection of the assembly modules and/or the technical components.

Assembly and Connection Instructions

The instruction in this chapter must be strictly followed to ensure a safe and reliable operation. The related standards and the preconditions in the EC design test certificate must be

observed. The Chapter “Rules for the General Operation Safety“, pages 3 to 5, must be carefully read and followed.

The installation may only be carried out by trained specialists, who possess the related certificates. These persons must be demonstrably familiar the particular characteristics in explosion-endangered facilities.

Mounting of the Terminal with Pre-Installed Modules

At the versions CHALLENGER 15i/18i-FHP the related of the related modules are already mounted and cabled ex-works on request. Only the potential equalization, the data cable and the power supply lines must be connected. All case nuts and mounting brackets must be tightened equally. Securing the CHALLENGER 15i/18i Dust -FHP Case

- Secure the standpipe on the floor or ceiling or with use of a tubular arch correspondingly on the wall (only the provided standpipe / tubular arch with closed mounting plate may be used exclusively).

- Secure the assembly coupling at the standpipe / tubular arch (only the provided assembly coupling may be used exclusively).

- Bolt the CHALLENGER I Dust 15/18-FHP case at the assembly coupling.

Potential Equalization and Grounding

The potential equalization is mounted at the standing leg

At the standpipe (STF) or at the tubular arch (EBF) and at the twistable coupling, the pre-installed ground line of the FHP case must be connected to the auto-cleaving coupling screw (inner side of the standpipe) M6x20.

Grounding connected to the coupling screw at Grounding from the coupling to the interior side of the STF the Case - common ground
