FREE MOVIES AT THE

PAVILION!

Come join us to watch a free movie at 10 am on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the Community Room of the Pavilion on the Lake. We will be showing a variety of popular movies, and you are wel-come to bring your own drink & snacks! Tentatively scheduled for the months ahead are:

October 10: A MAN NAMED PEARL (2006) An inspiring & sentimental documentary about Pearl Fryar, who lives in the small town of Bishopville, South Carolina. Determined to show his neighbors he could “keep up his yard”, his first goal was to win the coveted prize of “Yard of the Month”. With no formal training in either the arts or horticulture, through the years he created a 3-acre paradise of sculpted shrubs that attracts busloads of awe-struck vis-itors to his home every day. Once regarded as an eccentric oddball, he is now embraced by the small town’s elite as its economic savior because of his world-class topiary garden of fantastic, surreal de-signs. Rated G, 78 mins

November 14: IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934) A classic screwball romantic comedy about a runaway socialite traveling to New York City to elope with a fortune-hunting flyboy. Along the way, she meets a grumpy newspaperman who’s just been fired from his job, & the crazy misadventures start. Stars Clark Gable & Clau-dette Colbert . Winner of 5 Academy Awards. Not Rated, 105 mins

December 12: 42 (2013) An emotional & inspiring biographi-cal drama about the relationship between baseball icon Jackie Rob-inson & Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey, who signed Robinson & in 1947 made him the first African-American Major League Baseball player of the modern era. Stars Harrison Ford & Alan Tudyk. Rated PG-13 (language)

January 9: THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951) This adventure clas-sic stars Humphrey Bogart as the booze-guzzling captain of a bro-ken-down East African riverboat. He teams up with a straitlaced, iron-willed missionary (Katharine Hepburn) to take on a menacing German gunboat during WWI. Directed by John Huston, & Bogart won Best Actor Academy Award. Not Rated, 105 mins

After our first newsletter was distributed two years ago, the number of individuals who have requested to be placed on our mailing list has grown, and more “fun loving” seniors contact me each month to be added to the list. Our newsletter highlights not only many of the events and activities in Atascadero, it also includes special activi-ties in other communities that would appeal to seniors. Starting in January, we will be including information about wonderful trips for seniors offered by the organization, RSVP.

The costs of mailing out our newsletter have increased, and rather than charging a small fee for those of you who receive our newsletter by mail, we are changing the way we distribute our newsletter. This change will allow you to continue to receive our newsletter for free.

The wonderful Atascadero Magazine is published three times a year by the City of Atascadero. It is mailed to all households within the city limits. Included in the magazine is a section for “Boomers & Seniors”. This section contains updated information about the Atas-cadero Fun Club’s activities, and the Recreation Division’s classes and activities held at the Colony Park Community Center.

Effective January 1, 2014, the Atascadero Fun Club newsletter will no longer be mailed to you if you receive the Atascadero Magazine. However, if you use a Post Office box as your mailing address, you will continue to receive our newsletter. All of you who do not reside in Atascadero, you will also continue to receive the newsletter in the mail. This change will not affect any of you who receive your news-letter via e-mail – you will continue to receive it via e-mail.

Those of you who will no longer be receiving our newsletter by mail, you may pick up one of our newsletters at our regular distribution locations: Colony Park Community Center, 5905 Traffic WayAtascadero Public Library, 6850 Morro RoadAtascadero Chamber of Commerce, 6904 El Camino RealAtascadero City HallAARP building at Atascadero Lake ParkTempleton Community Services District Office, 420 CrockerPaso Robles Senior Center, 270 Scott St.

We appreciate your understanding in regards to these necessary changes. If you have any questions about our newsletter, or have sug-gestions for new activities you would enjoy in our community, please contact me at 805-674-7092, or email [email protected]. Ann FletcherAtascadero Fun Club

ATASCADERO FUN CLUB NEWSLETTER CHANGES

Atascadero Fun Club Newsletter Fall 2013

Senior Helpers is honored to contribute to the Atascadero Fun Club. Our contributions feature informative articles that are intended to help you enjoy a better quality of life.

Senior Helpers “Fall Prevention Checklist”

Install handrails on BOTH sides of stairs and grab bars in bathrooms (1/3 of households in America with stairs DO NOT have banisters or handrails. Only 19% of households in America have grab bars in tubs/showers).

Provide plenty of light at the top and bottom of stairs and throughout hallways. Paint the bottom basement step white to make it more visible. Secure rugs to the floor to prevent tripping. Attach non-slip strips to the bottom of slippers and shoes. In outside areas, check steps and walkways for loose bricks, cement or stone.

Senior Helpers “Fall Prevention Checklist” for Dementia/Alzheimer’s Patients

Encourage seniors to wear hip protectors (90% of hip fractures are due to falls). Make sure they have a walking aid within reach. Use an emergency sensor overnight to help detect wandering. Do not use bed rails overnight. Instead, lower the bed to the ground. Encourage seniors to rest with the head of the bed slightly raised. Use a seatbelt on a shower chair. Never leave them in the shower or bathroom unattended.

Other Tips To Help Prevent Falling:

Have Foot Size Measured – do this each time your senior buys shoes. Foot size changes with age and a shoe that is too big increases the risk of a fall.

Exercise Regularly – choose activities that increase leg strength and improve balance in seniors, such as Tai Chi. Eye Check-ups – make sure senior loved ones have their eyes checked by a doctor at least once a year and have

their eyeglasses updated as needed. A good tip: consider getting a pair with single vision distance lenses for activities such as walking outside.

Review Medications – have a doctor or pharmacist review medications/prescriptions to learn what may cause side effects, such as dizziness or drowsiness.

Fall Prevention Checklist Falls are the #1 cause of injuries, hospital visits and deaths among those 65 and older!

Falls have become a nationwide problem and despite what people may think about the older population…falls are not inevitable. In fact, they’re largely preventable. Up to 30 percent of those who fall suffer injuries such as hip fractures or head traumas. Did you know…….?

In 2008, 82% of fall deaths were among people 65 and older. Fall-related fractures occur more than twice the rate for older women than for

older men. More than 90% of hip fractures are caused by falls. And white women have

significantly higher hip fracture rates than black women. Direct medical costs of falls equaled $28.2 billion in 2010.
