Would you like to learn strategies on how to manage difficult conversations and set boundaries, while maintaining mutual respect in the relationship? This presentation will focus on communication skills, role playing, and other effective approaches. The discussion will focus on successful use of the LEAP method, as explained in Dr. Xavier Amadors book, I am Not Sick, I Dont Need Help. Some copies of the book will be made available for families. If you have a copy of the book, please bring it along. April 6, 2020 Treating Substance Use (incl. Tobacco Addiction) and Co-Occurring DisordersSpeakers: Azeem Sitabkhan & Lisa Evans, CHOICES-Consumers Helping Others Improve their Condition by Ending Smoking, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) & Zahid Syed & Kelly Magee, RIOT-Rutgers Interdisciplinary Opioid Trainers Program, Rutgers-RWJMS & Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy Research indicates that smokers who receive a combination of behavioral treatment and cessation medications quit at higher rates than those who receive minimal intervention. CHOICES peer educators will provide information about the prevalence of tobacco dependence among mental health consumers, and will be told from their own perspective as mental health consumers and former smokers. This presentation will provide resources for behavioral and pharmacological treatments that are available. Additionally, presenters will share information about a new program called RIOT, which is committed to increasing education and reducing stigma about Opioid Use Disorder and Medication Assisted Treatment in NJ. May 4, 2020 “Supportive Housing Options and Other Recovery Supports” Speaker: Harry Reyes, Assistant Division Director, Office of Treatment and Recovery Supports, Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, New Jersey Department of Human Services This presentation will provide families with clarification on the variety of supportive housing benefits available to individuals with mental illness and co-occurring disorders. Additionally, the speaker will discuss resources which families can best access to connect their loved ones to appropriate housing options, the limited vouchers and subsidies, and new housing opportunities being offered at the State and County levels. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear firsthand information that may be beneficial to you and your loved ones!

New Jersey Turnpike (Exit 9 coming from South)

Turn off at Exit 9 (New Brunswick). Follow Route 18 North toward New Brunswick

and Piscataway. Cross over the John Lynch Bridge to the River Rd./Highland Park exit

(jug handle) and make a right onto River Road (you will be heading away from Highland

Park). About 2 miles down on River Road make a right turn at 2nd light, which is Johnson

Dr./Hoes Lane West. Continue about ½ mile to Rutgers UBHC campus.*

Turn off at Exit 10. Follow Interstate 287 North. Come to Piscataway area. Take Bound

Brook/Highland Park Exit #9. At Exit #9, turn left on River Road and proceed to fourth light,

Johnson Dr./Hoes Lane West, and turn left. Continue about ½ mile to Rutgers UBHC campus.*
