Commodore’s Report In true NERYC fashion, food and wine managed to show up for the bedside get well party.

March is the month that the ‘membership and market-ing road show’ swings into action. Two big events will have us represented in Wilmington, DE and Ft. Monmouth, NJ. The 1st State Marine Expo in Dela-ware, March 13, 14, 15, has a volunteer list of approximately 12 members, working in shifts. The BRAC Expo event, in New Jersey on March 21 & 22 will have four of us covering the entire event. The calendar is showing our next event to be the Fleet Captains Lantern Queen dinner cruise on March 7th. Reservations are going fast, hope to see you there.

Winter has finally unleashed its viral onslaught on me, resulting in a six day backup of email and correspondence. It’s amazing what a simple cold can do, as there is the ever present persis-tent cough, depleted energy, fever and the effects on vision. Prognosis is good, as I can now look at a backlit LCD monitor screen without excessive tear-ing. By the time you read this, the Three Sheets to the Wind event will be history. This has always been a fun event and used as a fund raiser for the Jr. Sail program. Thanks go out to Rick for promoting this event and all who came out to support this worthy cause. Just this past week, some of our NERYC members (Lynn, Kay, Eileen, Pat) made their way up to Pennsylvania to visit with P/C Ceil Battaglini, who is still recovering from a broken femur.

The landscape committee, directed by Susan Woron, is busy making plans for our spring yard work. All of our guests and members were very impressed with the beautiful landscaping and grounds last year. Please consider volunteering with the gardening again this year. The number of dedicated members helping last year was very inspir-ing. This year, the grounds committee would like to expand on their previous accomplishments and make our Club gardens even more impressive this year. If you would like to adopt an area to plant and maintain, please give Susan a call or e-mail me at rogerneryc.com and join in the fun. Susan and her team are aiming to complete the gardening projects so that the gardens look spectacular on Opening Day. For the past few years the Power Squadron has hosted classes on boating safety and instruction at NERYC. This year the Power Squadron comes back on March 14th with two more classes that will be very beneficial to boaters. This year America’s Boating Course and Anchoring will be the classes offered. If you can, please try to attend the classes for a refresher or to im-prove your skills on the water. On Friday May 1st the Club will begin the 2009 Open-ing Weekend celebrations with the Margaritaville Party, followed by the first Spring Sail Race and offi-cial Opening Ceremonies on Saturday. Last year was very well attended by our members and many clubs from around the Bay. We have a lot to be proud of at our club, and it is wonderful to have this opportunity to showcase our facility to other CBYCA affiliated club members from around the Bay.

Guess what folks, we can officially begin thinking about Spring. Robins have been seen feeding on our lawn in Rising Sun. I don’t know about you, but with all the depressing news seen day after day, and the so called ‘Experts’ throwing out ‘Life Jackets’ to cure the financial mess we are in, I can’t wait to get out boat launched and begin living life on the top of the bay sharing summer with our NERYC family. We all need a break, don’t sit back and delay coming down to the club, begin now to participate in our up coming events. Birthday/Anniversary/New Member night will be March 13th with DJ Bob Cross providing entertain-ment for your listening and karaoke pleasure. For all your Irishmen and Irishwomen, we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day a little early this year. Our restaurant manager, Steve Dougherty, is having drink specials the entire evening helping our pocketbooks as well as keeping the party going. Our honored guests will re-ceive one free drink as a gift from NERYC celebrating their special day. We need every member who can possibly make it to join us and celebrate the begin-nings of year 2009! Our first major fund raiser, The Oyster Roast/Silent Auction will be held April 4th. The proceeds will help cover the expenses for the Commodore’s Ball and the BOG voted to designate half of the proceeds toward the new awning expenses. If you enjoy relaxing and sharing a meal or drink with family and friends under the awning on a warm summer afternoon, here is a way to express your appreciation. Contact Chair Ginny Somers at [email protected] to make your donation. As my predecessor has often stated, participating in an event is much more enjoyable than paying an assessment, Amen Roger. We are in the early planning stages for the 2009 Commodore’s Ball. Please contact me at [email protected] if you would like to help us make this event a special night for our next Commo-dore. We promise not to overburden you, please con-sider volunteering.

As you read this, our first cruise of the season is just days away. A fun filled evening awaits those who are signed up to board the Lantern Queen this Saturday for a deluxe buffet meal with all the trimmings. If for some reason you were unable to join us on the cruise but still want to partake of the eve-nings party atmosphere, join us at the club at 8:00pm where we will continue to party the night away with music provided by our favorite DJ, Bob Cross. Now is the time to start planning for the “Shakedown cruise” on April 25th & 26th. We will meet at the Summit North Marina, thorough out the day on Saturday. The Fleet Captains Locker will open at 4:30pm to help cele-brate the start of our 2009 boating season. For the paltry sum of $8 per person or $15 per couple, your Fleet Capt will be providing beer, wine, soft drinks and water. You need to bring an appetizer to share with the group. Please contact me with your estimated time of arrival, LOA, and electric requirements and I will make a reservation for all. Slip fees are a low $1.25 per ft plus $5 for electric per night. Remember that I also made arrangements with the Bear West Marine store for a 10% discount on mainte-nance and safety item for all club members for the week-end. For those coming by boat, I will have a car available for anyone wanting to visit the store. Remember to bring your NERYC membership card. Within the next couple weeks, a sign up sheet will be posted at the club for the Officer of the Day Program, (OOD). The program will be streamlined this year so as not to require less of any one individuals time. Specifics are still being finalized and will be posted along with the sign up sheet and also sent out via Yahoo groups. Please consider signing up for one or two sessions this summer. It’s fun, and a great way to spend a day at the club and get a free beer! That’s it for this month. As always contact me with questions, comments or suggestions. February was an awesome month. I've been two balls this past month, and I had so much fun! Let me tell you, White Rocks and Crescent Yacht Club certainly know how to throw a party. School is going well, and our interim reports will be coming out soon. We recently went down to Arundel Mills to see the Medieval Times Show on a school field trip. I had a blast watching the knights perform. I lost my voice and caught a cold from cheering so loudly and for my favorite, the Red Knight :) I'm so excited and ready for summer to come. My social life is going well. I've been hanging out with my friends a lot lately. Also this month I became CPR and First Aid certified at our club. I'd like to thank our awesome instructors Russ Zehnacker and Pat Shaw. I'll see you all around the club.

Hi members. We’ve had a busy off-season prepar-ing for our 2009 season. We plan to have a dock workday on March 28th to clean up after the seagulls and place our mooring balls.

Skip Best and I hope to have the sign mounted on the floating attenuator announcing the entrance to NERYC before the start of the season. Water and electric should be available by the first week in April.

As March begins we still have 20 available slips that Peg Brown and the Marketing committee are working hard to fill. Anyone wanting a dinghy rack please e-mail me at [email protected] . Dinghy racks are included with mooring holders but cost $80 for others to rent for the season. After you e-mail me, send a check for $80 to Linda in the office.

Looking forward for another great season of fun.

PRESENTED BY DOBBS DAVIS.

As a sail trimmer, tactician, and navigator with over 20 years experience and many championship titles to his

credit, Dobbs has competed in nearly every major offshore race and inshore regatta in the US and around the

world on boats of almost every design and size. His more recent focus on match racing and umpiring has brought

him into a close working knowledge of the racing rules, and he has taught numerous seminars and clinics on the

rules and their practical use in tactics. Besides having been an instructor and coach for North U for over a decade,

Dobbs has also written extensively about the sport as US Editor for Seahorse Magazine and is a regular contribu-

tor to Sailing World and several other magazines and web sites.

The 5th annual Three Sheets to the Wind Regatta Event held last Saturday was a great success. Junior sailor Brendon Wilkins was the overall champion. Having triumphed in all the preliminary heats, he managed to blow his boat around the course in a little over 10 seconds, beating the sail team’s Ron Reid to take home the big prize. Power boater John Sergeant proved he could ‘blow’ with the best of them by also making it to the finals. Apart from the fun time that was enjoyed by all, the activities of the evening were able to boost the junior sailing fund by $720. For all their hard work and endless dedication to the cause, thank you Rick, Sue, Mike and all the committee members. To all the club members who came out and supported the juniors, thank you also for your time and generosity.

Last chance to register for the Racing Rules Training Seminar scheduled for Saturday March 21st. The event will run from 10:30AM till 3:30PM with a break for lunch and will be facilitated by Dobbs Davis from North U. The training material is sanctioned by US Sailing, includes a custom designed take-home course work-book, and is specifically designed to not only explain the changes, but also to help de-mystify the rules, demonstrate how to put them into practice, and enhance your tactical skills. If you would like to take your racing to the next level, please do not let this great oppor-tunity pass you by. Since this event will also double as a fundraiser for our Junior Sailing Program, we are counting on your support! Encourage your crew and friends to be there too. This is a unique opportunity to further your sailing education while supporting the future of our sport and our club. If you have younger extended family members who are inter-ested in attending the summer sailing camps, please advise them to register early. Since we are hard at work promoting the camps outside of the club for the first time this year, spaces are already filling up fast. We have seven 4 day learn to sail sessions scheduled Monday to Thursday each week through out the summer, and will cater for beginner, intermediate and advanced. Participants are encouraged to sign up for more than one session. All the details and registration forms are available on the website www.neryc.com. Our first race is not that far away now! A copy of the Sail Race Schedule has been include in this issue for your reference. In order to prepare for the 2009 racing season, your on the water race officials, Justine Roecker and Suzanne Braun, will be brushing up their knowledge by attending a US Sailing Race management train-ing seminar in Annapolis on March 21st, and the race committee is also reviewing our own sailing instructions and procedures. Under current consideration are the fleet splits. We are reviewing the rat-ing cut-off between Non Spin A and B, and we would like to create two spinnaker classes this year if possible. We encourage potential participants to consider racing spinnaker this year. Let us know your thoughts and intentions to race.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the club on the 21st.

We would like to welcome our newest members to the NERYC family. Harvey and Carol Sue Renshaw of North East were sponsored by Sarah Detmer and Jack Burr. Raymond Stark, Carol Sue’s father was a life member. Welcome Harvey and Carol Sue! Our second new membership is Mary Ellen Brown, Jim’s and my youngest daughter who has joined as a legacy member. She lives in Newark and works in the banking industry. Welcome Mary Ellen!

In early February we held our new member meeting to meet, greet and learn. We talked about the history of NERYC, our facilities, who does what, the different activities, how to ac-cess the yahoo groups website and a whole host of things that “old” members do not even realize that they know. Jon Fowler, Claire Brechter, Ginny Somers, Russ Zehnacker, Steve Hogan, Steve Dougherty, April Conway, and Judy and Larry Lemasters all helped to acquaint the new members with NERYC. Thank you one and all for helping meet, greet and inform. We will have another new member meeting late in the spring.

On March 13, 14 and 15 NERYC will have a booth at the First state Marine Expo at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington, DE. 12 members will man the booth to hand out information about the Junior Sail Camp, our new marina, our banquet facilities, and membership in the club at the top of the Bay. If you are in the area come on over and cheer us on.

The following weekend some folks are traveling to Fort Mon-mouth, NJ to promote NERYC at an Expo sponsored by the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce to introduce the County to people who are moving to Aberdeen as part of the BRAC program.

Since growing membership and filling unoccupied slips remains our most important priority at present, the BOG has approved an additional membership promotion for the months of March and April; a promotional initiation fee of $200 will apply. Membership fees may also be spread over 3 months, upon request. *For example if someone joins March 15th they will pay $400 with their application, followed by two installments of $200 in April and May. Don’t forget that we will waive the initiation fee entirely on any new membership combined with a slip contract. Please note that the restaurant credit reward for current members recruiting 2 new members will unfortunately not be applicable during this promotional period.

Members, please help spread the word.

For the benefit of those who may not know, Joan Brown has resigned as marketing chair, I have agreed to fill in until a capable replacement can be found.

Considering the external and internal environments that face the club today, a significant escalation of our marketing effort is absolutely essential to ensure its continued viability. Unfor-tunately NERYC is not immune to the impacts of the widening economic recession. Currently we are showing a 20% drop in membership and are under capacity in our marina. It is impera-tive that we pursue an aggressive marketing strategy to increase both membership and slip occupancy. Right now there are fewer active boaters out there, and we know that other marinas are facing the same occupancy issues. Given the increased competition, we simply cannot afford to be complacent and continue to remain invisible.

We have a very small window remaining before the season re-opens. Now is the time that boaters start travelling to the area, start looking for slips etc. In order to raise awareness and attract new customers before the season starts, the BOG has approved a the following additional marketing promotions:

• Print media ad campaign from Feb through April - utilizing publications most directly targeted at our audience – Nor’easter, Mariner and Spin Sheet

• New Signs Permanent 5’ x 4’ x 8' tall sign to be installed at Hance Point /Rt. 272 intersection on bank property. Providing excellent visibility and continuous exposure, it is also a platform for promotional banners advertising events etc. • 4’x 8’sign to be displayed on NE Chamber display area on

Rt.40/Rt. 272 intersection (the most excellent visibility for us again). This sign will go up for a month and promote our open house scheduled and also the summer sailing camps. This sign will be re-used to promote NERYC events as and when needed.

• Open House April 19th promotion. • Junior sail camp promotion - it is our aim to fill seven camp

sessions this year- potential of 120 + new kids with families, again excellent exposure for us.

The marketing, membership and junior sailing teams are work-ing tirelessly to promote the club at every available venue and opportunity. We have exhibits at boat shows and expos lined up; we have an open house planned, we have approached schools, businesses and community organizations; secured editorial space, purchased advertizing, and commissioned signage. Time and effort remains free, and we ask the mem-bership to get involved and volunteer a little of both. Your club needs you to help us promote membership, and to attract new boats to our marina.

NERYC is a community which requires the support and commitment of the membership in order to secure its future. Participate, advocate, volunteer and help spread the word.

Important news regarding the Oyster Roast and Silent Auction fundraiser which is coming up on April 4th, 2009. This year half of the proceeds will go towards the replacing the awning that covers the porch. The old awning, which has been patched together many times already, finally succumbed to a violent wind storm last year and has had to be replaced. I am calling on all NERYC members to donate an auction item, gather friends and relatives, and come out to support this fun event. It is the hope of the auction committee to realize enough profit from the auction to save the necessity of an assessment. So please, donate, participate and help out!
