Español en la Pub y “Miami Nights!”
El jueves pasado, el 28 de febrero, después de la mesa de conversación (Spanish at the Pub), hubo un evento cultural maravilloso y muy divertido. Este evento se llama "Miami Nights" y va a tomar lugar en el tercer piso de Cregeen's el último jueves de cada mes a las 9:30 de la noche. El evento empezó en enero de este año y ya es un evento muy popular para todos que tienen un interés en la cultura latina,
especialmente la música y el baile. El jueves pasado, un instructor de Trim Gym dio lecciones de baile, incluyendo el merengue y la bachata, a todos. Fue una noche excelente de música y baile con canciones de salsa, cumbia, bachata, merengue y más. Les recomiendo a todos que vengan a Cregeen's el 28 de marzo para el próximo "Miami Nights."

Spanish at the Pub and “Miami Nights!”
On Thursday, after the Spanish at the Pub conversation table, the Spanish faculty and students joined a wonderful cultural event that proved to be great fun. This event is called “Miami Nights” and takes place on the third floor of Cregeen’s Pub on the last Thursday of each month at 9:30pm. The “Miami Nights” events began in January of this year and are very popular for all who have an interest in Latino
culture, especially music and dance. Last Thursday, a Trim Gym instructor gave dance lessons, including merengue and bachata, to everyone. It was an excellent night of music and dancing with songs of salsa, cumbia, bachata, merengue, and more. I encourage everyone to come to Cregeen’s on March 28th for the next “Miami Night.”

conversation tables. Stammtisch
is held every Friday at The Edge,
and our new German tutor,
Stefanie, now hosts Gespräch on
Wednesdays in the Multimedia
Center in Wilson 317.
In addition to Tertulia at The
Edge on Wednesdays, there are
conversation tables for Spanish
students at the elementary and
intermediate levels throughout
the week. Advanced students in
the Spanish Internship host the
“Charlas” and plan fun activities
and conversations that you can
attend to immerse yourself in
the Hispanic culture and
advance your communication
skills.
French students can join Dr.
Johnson at the Edge on Mondays
at 5pm for Le Cercle Française.
Additionally, Shine tutors French
in the Multimedia Center in
Wilson 317 on Wednesdays and
Thursdays. Check out the back

Bernales Albites. I earned my
PhD in Spanish from Boston
University in 2009. I have
ample teaching experience at
the university level. Before
coming to ASU I had taught
Spanish Language and
Culture at Indiana University,
Bloomington; Denver
University, Boston University,
Simmons College, and
Brandeis University. I am
originally from Lima, Perú.

Latin American Cultural
Production, Theory and Film
Studies. I am currently

II and The Survey of Latin
American Literature. I love
films, ceviche, soccer (fútbol)

many years in America and
got my Ph. D. at the
University of Indiana. My
specialty in research is the
literature and culture of
II and a Special Topics course
about youth culture in Spain
in the 1990s and 2000s. If I

El jueves 27 de septiembre el Centro Multicultural de la universidad estatal de Arkansas coordinó una celebración dedicada a los hispanos. Esta celebración presento una oportunidad para que los estudiantes hispanos, los profesores y el personal en general de aprender un poco más acerca de los programas y servicios que el Centro Multicultural ofrece. La directora del programa enfatizó que uno de las organizaciones estudiantiles que actualmente está atrayendo mucho interés es “HOLA”. La meta de HOLA es mejorar y
apoyar la experiencia de la universidad para la población estudiantil hispana. También, HOLA fomenta un sentido de comunidad entre todos los que tienen un interés en la cultura latina y en apoyar el éxito académico, social y personal de los Latinos en ASU. La celebración siguió con música proporcionada por un hispano local y con la presentación de dos invitados especiales que luego hablarían acerca de la importancia de conocer diferentes culturas y el valor de aprender una nueva lengua ya que esto es una ventaja fuerte para los
estudiantes en el mundo de los negocios. Esta fue una buena experiencia social, ya que conocí a más personas que están siguiendo una carrera en español, vi a viejas amistades y me informé en forma más detallada de los programas ofrecidos por el Centro Multicultural.

Bellys Cox - Una celebración de la Hispanidad
Erase una vez un joven príncipe que estaba en la universidad estudiando ciencia. Un día, su buen amigo, otro estudiante de la universidad que estudiaba química, estaba haciendo un experimento cuando accidentalmente cambió al príncipe a un sapo.
Dios mío, ¡qué sorpresa! Que día que tuvo el príncipe! El sapo decidió ir a un bosque tropical para estudiar las plantas y las aves en peligro de extinción. Cuando llegó al bosque, encontró una casa grande debajo de las raíces de un árbol hueco y hermoso. En la casa había mucho espacio para su escritorio y todos los libros. El llamo a la casa su ‘cueva hombre’.
En el árbol hueco encima de la casa del sapo vivía una princesa soltera. La casa de ella tenía una terraza grande
con una vista espectacular del bosque. Cuando la princesa conoció a su vecino nuevo, a ella le gustó inmediatamente. Muchas veces la princesa invitaba al sapo para sentarse en la terraza con ella. Tomaban un vaso de vino y hablaban sobre la vida. El sapo secretamente se enamoró de la princesa.
Los dos se hicieron grandes amigos. Todos los días ellos daban largos paseos juntos por el bosque y hablaban de muchas cosas maravillosas. Un día la princesa le dijo el sapo que quería volver a la universidad, pero ella tenía miedo. El sapo era, por supuesto, muy intelectual y tenía un gran respeto por la educación. El la ánimó a seguir su sueño y muy pronto la princesa estaba en la universidad estudiando diligentemente todos los días. El sapo seguía
animándola cariñosamente, y le contaba a la princesa historias de sus aventuras con sus propios estudios sobre el comportamiento de las aves e insectos, la diversidad de los árboles de las plantas, y el delicado equilibro de las especies y los ecosistemas.
Finalmente, la princesa feliz recibió su diploma. El sapo estaba tan emocionado que el saltó al hombro de la princesa. Ella besó al sapo….y ¡qué sorpresa! El sapo de repente se convirtió en un príncipe guapo. El príncipe era de baja estatura como la princesa y tenía una cabeza hermosa y calva. La princesa suspiró profundamente y dijo: ‘el es hermoso en mis ojos, absolutamente perfecto’.
Se casaron y vivieron muy felices para siempre en su árbol hermoso en el bosque tropical.

The 27th of September, a Thursday, the Multicultural Center at Arkansas State University hosted a celebration dedicated to the Hispanic community. This celebration provided an opportunity for Hispanic students, professors, and staff in general to become familiar with the programs and services provided by the Multicultural Center. The director of the program emphasized that one of the currently growing programs is “HOLA”, short for Hispanic Outreach and Latino Appreciation. The objective of this program is to improve
and support the university experience for the Hispanic student population, said the director. HOLA also fosters a sense of community between those that have an interest in Latin culture and available foundation which helps support the academic, social, and personal success at Arkansas State University. The celebration continued with music performed by a Hispanic community member, and a presentation given by two special guests which talked about the importance of getting to know different cultures. The presentation also
incentivized getting to know the Hispanic culture, and emphasized the value of learning a new language because it gives an incredible advantage, especially (but not limited to) to students in the business field. This was a good social experience, as I got to know more people who were majoring in Spanish, bumped into old friends, and got informed about the multitude and variety of programs that are offered by the Multicultural Center.
Bellys Cox - Latino Appreciation
Once upon a time, a young prince was at university studying science. One day his good friend, another student at the university who was studying chemistry, was doing an experiment when he accidentally changed the prince into a frog.
My god, what a surprise! What a day the prince had. But he was always positive about life and about the world. The frog decided to go to a tropical forest to study plants and birds in danger of extinction. When he went to the forest, he found a large house under the roots of a beautiful hollow tree. In the house was a lot of space for his desk and all of his books. He called it his “man cave.”
In the tree, above the house of the frog, lived a princess who was single. Her house
had a large terrace with a spectacular view of the forest. When the princess met her new neighbor, she liked him immediately. Many times the princess invited the frog to sit on the terrace with her. They had a glass of wine and talked about life. The frog secretly fell in love with the princess.
The two became great friends. Every day they took long walks together through the forest and talked about many marvelous things. One day the princess told the frog that she wanted to return to university but she was afraid. The frog was of course very intellectual and had a great respect for education. He encouraged her to follow her dreams and very quickly the princess was at university studying diligently every day. The frog continued to encourage her lovingly and
told the princess stories of his adventures with his own studies about the behavior of birds and insects, the diversity of trees and plants, and the delicate balance of species and ecosystems.
Finally the happy princess received her degree. The frog was so excited, that he jumped to the shoulder of the princess. She kissed the frog…and what a surprise! The frog changed into a handsome prince. The prince was short like the princess, and had a beautiful bald head. The princess sighed profoundly and said, “He is beautiful in my eyes, absolutely perfect.”
They were married and lived
happily ever after in their
beautiful tree in the tropical
forest.
