  • What are the Lunar Nodes

    (Rāhu and Ketu)?

Rather than planets with shape or mass,

the Nodes are simply the places where

the orbit of the Moon intersects with the

    “orbit” of the Sun.

The point formed after the Moon has

traveled from South to North is called the

Ascending Node, or North Node. More

commonly known in many cultures as

the Dragon’s Head, in India it is Rahu

    the demon.

The point formed after the Moon has

moved from North to South is

    called the Descending Node, or

South Node. More commonly known in

many cultures as the Dragon’s Tail, in

India it is Ketu, which literally means

comet, or smoke, which implies it is

    formless.

  • • The Nodes are opposite points and are always 180 degrees apart.

    • The Nodes go through each zodiacal sign in about 18 months, and it takes 18.6

years for each Node to go through the Zodiac and return to its natal position. Modern

astrologers call this the Nodal Return. In half that time (about 9.3 years) the Nodes

return to their opposite place meaning that the transiting South Node will reach the

natal North Node, and the transiting North Node will reach the place of the natal

South Node. In Indian astrology, Rāhu Dasha is 18 years, the Saros cycle of eclipses

is also 18 years where physically the eclipse will occur in the same part of the sky,

forming a series that sometimes lasts over centuries, and the Metonic cycle where

certain eclipses repeat themselves every 19 years.

    • The Nodes always move retrograde through the zodiac, which is why the eclipses

also move retrograde, changing signs approximately every 18 months. The Mean

Nodes only move in a retrograde fashion, whereas the True Nodes retrograde, but

also station and go direct for short times as well.

  • For this reason the Mean and True Nodes can be up to two degrees apart especially

shortly before or after eclipses since Mean Nodes move steadily. The True Node is the

more exact calculation, whereas the Mean Node is what was used in Indian astrology.

Today on Thursday June 15, 2017 at 7:00 EDT the mean and true nodes are 1 degree

    25 minutes apart. .

Since the true nodes can station retrograde and direct, it is around the time of eclipses

the true nodes linger and stay on one degree for a longer time.

  • • Nodal Symbolism

    • In western astrology, the Nodes are considered to be points of evolution. The South

Node is where we are comfortable, or according to some, where our past life has

been and therefore we stay at that comfort level. The North Node is the place we are

compelled to move towards in order to evolve and be the best we can be. Ultimately

we must balance the two points, that is, the signs and houses.

    • More commonly known in many cultures as the Dragon’s Head, in India, Rāhu was

the demon or disembodied head who caused eclipses. He devours and never

digests, so that the appetite is insatiable. In the birth chart, Rāhu is said to have the

qualities of Saturn. They are both material, disciplined and calculating.

    • More commonly known in many cultures as the Dragon’s Tail, in India, Ketu is the

serpent’s tail, or disembodied entity from the head down. There is heart but no head,

so it is inspirational and artistic, but also wasteful, since it is part of the body where

the waste material goes. Ketu, originally a comet, or mass of smoke, became

    identified with the tail.

  • • In the birth chart, Ketu is said to have the qualities of Mars. They are both action-

oriented, but also can obliterate and become potentially violent.

    • Because of the fact that the Nodes form eclipses, which rob the heavens of the Sun

and Moon, they were considered to be malefic forces. They are depicted as the head

(North) and tail (South) of the dragon in many cultures and in India as the serpent.

    • The story of how eclipses were formed is called the Churning of the Ocean, and the

most common form of the story is from the Mahābhārata and perfectly describes the

symbolism of the Nodes and Eclipses.

  • The Churning of the Ocean (Samudramathana)

    • We begin with the Gods living on Mt. Meru

much like Mt. Olympus in Greek mythology.

The world was in need of the amṛta--the

    nectar of immortality---, like Greek

    ambrosia. The nectar provides immortality

to the deities. The Gods (devas) enlisted the

help of the demons to churn the ocean.

They inverted the mountain so that the peak

    went into the water.

    • They wrapped the serpent Vasuki around he

mountain, with the demons on one side and

the Gods on the other. These are the devas

(gods) and asuras (demi gods or demons)

since literally they are not gods.

    • They bring the amṛta up from the bottom of

ocean along with riches and gold. To

celebrate the Gods drank the amṛta but

leave out the demons. The demon Rāhu

then disguised himself and went in between

Sun and Moon and when the Sun passed

amṛta, Rāhu took it and drink providing

    immortality.

  • • Vishnu threw his discus and severed Rāhu ’s head, but because he was immortal,

became a head and a tail.

    • These two parts were doomed to chase the Sun and Moon throughout eternity and

when they got close and gobbled up the Sun and Moon eclipses were formed.

    • Because of the fact that the Nodes form eclipses, which rob the heavens of the Sun

and Moon, they were considered to be malefic forces. They are depicted as the head

(North) and tail (South) of the dragon in many cultures and in India as the serpent.

    • In India, the Nodes are considered to be demons, or malefic forces. According to

texts they rule foreigners, the unconventional, the technical, drugs, excess, and that

which is most tempting and dangerous. This is because they were uninvited guests

    and they intruded.

    • The Nodes are called chaya grahas, or shadow planets since they are always lurking

in the background. In keeping with that symbolism, when the Node catches up to a

planet, point, or angle in your chart, secrets frequently come to light, and things get

revealed, forcing us to deal with and transform them, or be destroyed—literally sink

or swim. during eclipse season (time between two eclipses) when the Nodes are

close to the Sun and Moon, this especially occurs.

  • What is an Eclipse/Grahanam?

    • An Eclipse/Grahanam (“the act of seizing or holding”), or occultation, is formed when

the Sun/Surya or Moon/Candra is obstructed from view by a certain set of

circumstances involving the Earth, Sun, and Moon.

    • The diagrams on the following pages will show those precise circumstances.

    • .

  • What is a Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse can only occur at Full Moon (Sun opposite Moon), when the Earth comes between

the Sun and the Moon blocking the Sun’s rays from reaching all or part of the Moon. The Earth

passes through some portion of its shadow blocking some or all of the Sun’s rays from reaching the

Moon. That shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped components, one nested inside the

other. The outer or penumbral shadow is a zone where the Earth blocks part but not all of the Sun's

rays from reaching the Moon. In contrast, the inner or umbral shadow is a region where the Earth

blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.

  • What is a Solar Eclipse?

A Solar Eclipse can only occur on the New Moon (Sun Moon conjunction) when the Moon comes

between the Sun and the Earth. If the Moon's shadow falls upon Earth's surface at that time, part or

all of the Sun’s disk is covered or 'eclipsed' by the Moon. When the Moon's umbral or inner shadow

strikes Earth we see a total eclipse. If the Moon’s penumbral, or out shadow, strikes Earth, we see

a partial eclipse of the Sun from that region. Partial eclipses are dangerous to look at because the

un-eclipsed part of the Sun is still very bright. You must use special filters to safely watch a partial

    eclipse of the Sun.

  • • A pair of eclipses, Solar and Lunar, which occur within two weeks of each other,

takes place every six months. Sometimes the Lunar Full Moon eclipse occurs first,

followed by the Solar new Moon two weeks later, and sometimes the Solar occurs

first, followed by the Lunar two weeks later. Once in a while (like Summer 2009,

Summer 2011, and Spring 2013) they come in a set of three eclipses that are each 14

days apart. In 2013 there was a lunar on April 25, a solar on May 9, and a lunar on

    May 25.

    • In 2018 there will be a solar on July 13, a lunar on July 27,and a solar on August 11.

    • Some say that it is more auspicious when going from New Moon to Full Moon

because it is a waxing period of increase, whereas going from Full Moon to New

Moon is a waning period of decrease.

  • • What distinguishes a normal lunation (New or Full Moon) from an Eclipse is

the proximity of the Lunar Nodes to the Sun and Moon.

    • An eclipse can only occur when the Lunar Nodes are close to the Sun and

the Moon. The following are the distances that occur to transform a lunation

    into an eclipse.

    • A Lunar Eclipse MAY occur if there is a Full Moon within 12º 15’ (Celestial

    Longitude), of a Node.

    • A Lunar Eclipse MUST occur if there is a Full Moon within 9º 30‘ of a Node.

    • A Solar Eclipse MAY occur if there is a New Moon within 18º 31' of a Node.

    • A Solar Eclipse MUST occur if there is a New Moon within 15º 21' of a

    Node.

If a New or Full Moon occurs within 5 degrees of a Node, the Eclipse will be

Total or Annular. In these cases the Node will hit the eclipse point in a very

short duration from the eclipse meaning the period is very intense.

  • • Eclipse Season

    • In general an eclipse period or season (the two weeks between and including the two or three

eclipses) is intense, dramatic, and often accompanies important events in the world--not always

difficult but memorable. Sometimes it indicates great rises, and sometimes meteoric falls.

Examples of events happening around eclipses include Princess Diana’s death on August 31,

1997, Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995, birth of Prince William on June 21, 1982, birth

of Donald Trump on June 14, 1946.

    • When eclipses occur within a week or two of planetary stations, especially malefic retrogrades,

cataclysmic, momentous events like earthquakes, hurricanes, meteorological changes, violence,

and even terrorist attacks occur. The obvious reason is the juxtaposition of these two

phenomena—retrograde stations (when a planet slows down and moves closer to the earth) and

eclipses (which take place on a Full Moon or New Moon, and interferes with the path of the

    Moon or Sun).

    • Although occurrences like earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, plane crashes, violence, and political

comings and goings are commonplace, those that take place around an eclipse and retrograde

station have universal impact and reverberate around the world.

  • When stations and eclipses take place within the same week, often cataclysmic events occur.

  • • During times of eclipses secrets come to light and things get revealed especially

during the two weeks between the eclipses. If your spouse or partner is having a

secret love affair, or spending money on the side, it will come to light during eclipse

season. If you make a business deal, or fall in love during eclipse season, be cautious

since there are more things that will come to light as time passes. Some examples

    follow:

    • Between the October 8, 2014 Lunar Eclipse and the October 23, 2014 Solar Eclipse,

the Ebola crisis was suddenly in the headlines, even though it had been around for a

while. It suddenly became a threat and more people came back from Africa and

needed to be treated, and some died.

    • The Solar Eclipse occurred on September 13, 2015, the Pluto direct station on

September 26, and the Lunar Eclipse on September 28. On September 25, in the

U.S., Speaker of the House John Boehner announced his resignation, which is

something he had wanted to do the year before, but could not leave the year before.

The eclipse is when it came to light. He said he wanted to be in his position when the

Pope was here so he could receive him.

  • • Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails came to light in March 2015 around the Eclipses, and

her pneumonia was revealed on September 11, 2016 at the memorial service, during

this September’s eclipse season. Anthony Weiner’s bad behavior surfaced around

the September 1, 2016 eclipse. It was conjunct his Mercury.

    ▪ The Nodes and especially the eclipses create energy and intensity and if the nodes

and eclipse hit a planet or a point in your chart you will have great changes in your

own life as if you have been awakened and something has been revealed.

    ▪ It is important to see the area of your chart where the nodes and eclipses fall and if

they hit a planet or personal point in your chart. It will activate that point, bringing

things to light that the planet or point represents, sometimes positively and sometimes

negatively, but be prepared for something to be activated. For instance if the planet is

Venus, then it will have to do with generic meaning of Venus---love, creativity, money-

--but also to do with the house Venus rules and occupies. Nodes and Eclipses should

be viewed as you would look at outer planet transits.

  • • But even if a particular planet is not being hit, the house that the node and eclipse falls

in will be the one that is affected so that the eclipse will affect us regardless. If it falls in

your second house something regarding money needs to be paid attention to. There

does not have to be a great loss or gain, (but it could if other transits confirm that) but it

means that you should give it attention for the period that the eclipses and nodes fall in

    that house.

    • Sometimes nothing happens on the actual eclipse, but instead it will have effects for

some time before and after the event and planets that conjoin or aspect the eclipse

point will activate the activity around the eclipse.

    • This is especially true for when the Nodes hit eclipse points before or after the actual

eclipse takes place, the span of the eclipse may be considered to begin and end

though it does not mean that the effects of that particular eclipse will necessarily

disappear as there still may be planets that also hit the eclipse point.

  • • If the Node hits the eclipse point prior to the eclipse, then the Node may be said to

awaken what the eclipse will finish. If the eclipse occurs before the Node hits the

eclipse point, then the Node will activate what the eclipse has started to awaken.

    • This goes for mundane and natal events. It is also important to watch for other planets

when they hit the eclipse point, esp. if affecting a point or planet in your chart.

  • Examples of Node hitting the Eclipse Point
