The Western Australia Industry Advisory Board The ASTHM Industry Advisory Board of WA (IABWA) is a

talented group of industry leaders representing a broad

span of hospitality and tourism services including hotels,

resorts, convention centres, airports, travel agencies,

indigenous tourism and the marketing of the state.

The main purpose of the IABWA is to give ASTHM industry

related advice and support. The Board’s principle focus is to

accelerate recognition of ASTHM by the industry, government

and students as a school dedicated to creating future

tourism, hospitality and events leaders and professionals,

through a close partnership with the industry.

Key Roles of the Industry Advisory Board• Advise ASTHM on strategic developments affecting the

industry and education

• Connect ASTHM to key industry bodies and businesses

• Identify opportunities for working more closely with the

industry at all levels

• Advocate the importance of increasing education levels

and developing career paths

• Influence curriculum, assessment and research

The IABWA have always been instrumental in contributing

TO A TRUE SUCCESS STORY

lenka goldsmidovaEvEnT OPERATIOnS SuPERvISOR, PARMElIA HIlTOn, PERTH

lenka left the Czech Republic to study event management with the australian

school of Tourism and Hotel management (asTHm). asTHm’s focus on

practical work placements saw lenka working with the Perth Convention and

exhibition Centre and this experience gave her career a clear head start.

A recommendation from an ASTHM mentor then led to the Hilton where she is

now Event Operations Supervisor.

lenka thrives in an environment that is constantly changing as she works on

different events with different people. As lenka says, “I enjoy making sure the

guest’s requirements are met and each guest is different. I especially enjoy

weddings and making it the perfect day for the bride and groom.”

lenka won the award for Best Dining and Banquet Services Employee at the

2009 AHA-Aon Hotel Awards for Excellence. If you are looking for a dynamic

knowledge of tourism, hotel and events management concepts and theories, and also share their practical industry experiences.

Key Staff

Dr Alfred OgleAssociate Dean Hospitality and Tourism

With a passion for applied research, his areas of interest is everything pertaining to hotels with particular

focus on hotel product and service innovation, hotel facilities design and hotel guest-management

interfacing resulting in many publications and research projects.

Alfred is an advocate of close industry-academic ties and of the belief that practice informs theory which

in turn enlightens practice. Originally hailing from Malaysia, he is passionate about preparing aspiring

hoteliers for the challenges of our unique industry by honing their professional attitude and aptitude.

lailani ZarragaCourse Coordinator Hospitality and Tourism

A passionate educator, Lailani’s teaching career spans over a period of 14 years. Hailing from the

Philippines, she draws from her experience in food service and production complemented by university

pedagogic duties to engage with students at both a theoretical and practical level.

Lailani’s current role as Acting Course Coordinator at the Australian School of Tourism and Hotel

Management revolves around the administration and delivery of subjects such as Management, Food and

Beverage and Marketing to on-campus hospitality students.

nadezhda (nadia) EliseyevaSenior lecturer & Industry liaison Manager

Nadia’s interests are in the fields of globalisation, hospitality marketing and customer service. Active

in academic research, she brings to the teaching team experience in front office and guest relations

operations in the Middle East.

Nadia’s role at ASTHM as Senior Lecturer involves the delivery of subjects such as Financial Information

for Decision Making and Introduction to Tourism and Hospitality Management. As the Industry Liaison

Manager, she keeps close ties with key people in tourism, hospitality and events in addition to industry

peak bodies. This close industry relationship and valuable work placement is the hallmark of ASTHM.

Key staff are complimented by many other dedicated teaching staff at ASTHM.

DIPlOMA OF HOSPITAlITY

1 Year Full Time

Planning and execution are paramount and this program

has a strong focus on management skills with a services

oriented approach as this applies directly to the broad

business operations of international hotels and resorts.

The diploma integrates study with nationally registered

vocational units. Through education and work placements,

students become familiar with the practicalities of the

hospitality industry from food and beverage services, front

office and rooms division to the strategic management

of international hotels, resorts and restaurants.

Students also undertake 36 industry work

placement shifts as part of this course.

PATHWAYS TO A HIGHER DEGREESuccessful graduates of the Diploma of Hospitality

will qualify for entry into a Bachelor of Business in Hotel

Management at a higher education provider.

Australia’s convention and event industry has been one of

the fastest growing and contributes more than $8 billion to

the national economy every year. Australia is developing

a reputation as a destination that can bid for, manage and

produce conventions and events of all shapes and sizes like

the 2000 Olympics and the Rugby World Cup.

This diploma has been developed with industry and academic

leaders in convention and event management. The program

offers a balanced integration of theoretical study and

practical training. Through our integrated work experience

program, students also become familiar with the practicalities

of working in the conventions and event industry in areas

such as events management and convention, meetings and

exhibitions management.

Students also undertake 36 industry work placement shifts as

part of this course.

PATHWAYS TO A HIGHER DEGREESuccessful graduates of the Diploma of Events will

qualify for entry into a Bachelor of Business at a higher

TO EVERYTHING YOU NEEDStudents may wear black or grey business trousers

or skirts (for our female students), black or grey

business jacket, sweater or vests with a white

business style shirt. Ties are not essential however

students should feel free to wear a tie if they like.

Business attire may be ordered through the school or

students are welcome to wear items from their own wardrobe.

Text BooksStudents must also purchase text books for their

studies. A list of required text books for the first

semester will be sent to students with their letter

of offer and is also available on our web site.

Industry Work PlacementsOur students enjoy the unique opportunity to gain experience

in the very best hotels, resorts and event companies.

Before starting placements all students must meet

our internship placement standards. Students

are assessed on the following criteria:

• Satisfactory attendance record

• High standards of personal grooming and appearance

appropriate for the industry as identified in the

Student Handbook

• Demonstrate the required level of skill and knowledge to

complete the placement

Student OrientationThe week before each semester, all new students are

required to attend the orientation week. Students get

the opportunity to meet academic staff, get to know

our location, facilities and meet fellow students. They

also receive advice about our professional and academic

expectations. Students also receive course materials,

handbooks and instruction on MyEnrolment.

Student Services & AdmissionsOur student services and admissions departments have a

wide range of responsibilities spanning the student’s journey

from recruitment to administration and support. Our highly

qualified staff will handle your application, enrolment,

re-enrolment, fees, accommodation bookings and any

other questions that you may have during your studies.

Student AttireIn keeping with the philosophy of the school and

the professional attitude with which our students

conduct themselves, the attire worn by ASTHM

students is casual to formal business attire.

Working & EarningInternational students can work 20 hours a week

during school terms and full time during breaks.

The wages you earn will assist with your living

expenses but will not be sufficient to cover the cost

of tuition and living while studying in Australia.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)It is an Australian Government requirement that all

international students have Overseas Student Health

Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their visa in Australia.

International students must pay the cost of their OSHC

for the duration of their visa with their tuition fees

once accepted on a course. Medibank Private is the

provider and fees can be viewed at medibank.com

Student visa ApplicantsApplicants with English as a second language

must demonstrate one of the following levels

of language to qualify for a place:

• IELTS 5.5 overall (minimum 5.0 in each band) or

• TOEFL 525 or

• 195 (Computer Based Score) or

• CEFR B2 or

• Eurocentres Level 6 or

• General English Upper Intermediate or higher

Students who do not meet the required English

level are eligible for enrolment by ASTHM into an

intensive English course at Eurocentres Perth.

TO geTTing sTarTedApplicationsSelection for study is based on individual merit and

applicants must attend an interview to assess their

personality, character, attitude to the service industry and

relevant work experience. The application process is:

• Submit the Application for Admission in this brochure with

the Application Fee (International Applicants only)

• Include your resume using the template at asthm.edu.au

• Include certified copies of your school reports and

academic transcripts (certified translations to English)

Applicants must attend a selection interview at ASTHM or the

office of one of our appointed education agents. Mature age

applicants with satisfactory levels of industry experience will

be assessed individually.

Course FeesAll course fees contribute positively to every student’s

learning experience. Current fees are available on our

Admissions RequirementsASTHM welcomes students into our diploma courses who

are at least 17 years and 6 months old and have achieved a

satisfactory result in the Australian equivalent of Year 11 or

higher.

Making an ApplicationAll applicants must complete the Application for Admission

Form. You will find this form in this brochure and on our

web site. Please submit the form with your supporting
