“EWU EHS Celebrates More Graduations!” shows pictures of children and parents from six recent graduations. We know it is the child who graduates, but it is the parents who nurtured, taught and advocated for their children throughout Early Head Start and who will continue to do so throughout their children’s lives.

Parents are making a difference in the lives of

their children and in the quality of the Early

Head Start program.

Thank you parents for inspiring us!

Hello EHS Parents,

This issue of our newsletter is filled with articles about and pictures of Inspiring Parents in our Early Head Start program. Please take a look!

“Inspiring EHS Dads” is an article about two EHS dads who share their insights about what is important to them about being a dad and how they make a difference in the lives of their children.

“Meet Your 2017-2018 Policy Council Members” introduces you to 14 Policy Council representatives who are all current or former Early Head Start parents.

Members of the 2016-2017 EWU Early Head Start Policy Council held a meeting on May 5, and the last meeting of their term on June 2.

Some of the key actions taken by the Policy Council at these meetings include:

Review and approval of the EWU Early Head Start Annual Report for July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016

Providing input on Parent Survey revisions

Hiring approval for a temporary Parent Child Educator position

Certifying the 2017 Policy Council Elections

Review and approval of a Federal COLA Supplemental Application

A big THANK YOU from everyone at EWU EHS to all of the 2016-2017 members for their hard work and dedication to improving Early Head Start for Tri-County children and families.

At Early Head Start, We Know That DADS ARE SUPER IMPORTANT!

Research shows that actively engaged dads of infants & toddlers greatly strengthen their children’s development in all areas!

Recently, we took time to talk with Ryan Wallace and Justin Mellis, a couple of inspiring dads who were formerly in Early Head Start.

Both Ryan and Justin spent time in EHS as single parents, Ryan with two boys, now 8 and 4, and Justin with four girls who are now 8, 7, 5½, and his youngest just turning 4.

Though these two former EHS dads both faced some very difficult situations and challenging life circumstances, they demonstrated great commitment to their children. They also took part in Early Head Start as a way of supporting their child’s growth, development and learning, and to learn more themselves. Ryan even made the time to serve two terms as an EHS Policy Council member.

“From the beginning I always wanted to be sure that I’ve taken all the steps that I can for my child to be successful,” said Ryan, “and (enrolling in EHS) felt like a good way of getting more resources to be able to find out developmentally where my son was at.” “(EHS) was a lot help for me, to know what I’m going to do, more than (my son) directly being taught,” Ryan added.

“It’s just the constant learning, you know? I think that is the biggest benefit,” said Justin.

When asked what they thought was the most important things for dads to know about being a father, they both mentioned spending time with your kids. And Justin said it brilliantly;

“You just have to be there. They just want your time. You try to work all this overtime and make money so you can give them a good life, and really they don’t want none of that. They just want you! You know I’m right. I mean, all that materialistic stuff—that’s not gonna make or break (it for) them. But YOU being there as a parent, WILL,” said Justin.

A huge THANK YOU, and Happy Father’s Day to Ryan and Justin, and to all of the EHS Dads for all that you do to be great fathers!

Be “Sun-Safe” While Enjoying Your Summer

To prevent sunburn, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends:

Keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight. Find shade under a tree, an umbrella, or the stroller canopy.

When possible, dress yourself and your children in cool, comfortable clothing that covers the body, such as lightweight cotton pants, long-sleeved shirts, and hats.

Check the AAP website for more Summer Safety tips at: www.healthychildren.org/English/news/pages/Summer-Safety-Tips-Sun-and-water-Safety.aspx
