VISION: The global leader enhancing the quality of business schools and programs focused on teaching excellence.

MISSION: ACBSP develops, promotes, and recognizes best practices that contribute to continuous improvement of business education and accredits qualified business programs.


History ACBSP established in 1988 in Kansas City. Focus on teaching excellence and all degree levels. International accreditation from beginning. August 1992 recognized by the Dept. of Education. January 2001 was recognized by Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).Change in philosophy, membership, and staff structure in 2003 to reflect new way of doing things.


Membership OverviewCurrently 568 educational members and 14

corporate members. This includes over 5,800 individual members. Educational members include 402 accredited, 92 candidates, and 74 members without accredited status.Currently 172 associate degree institutions, 369 baccalaureate degree institutions and 27 offer and are accredited in both.Members outside the United States total 66 in 25 countries.

“Discover ACBSP”

Separate boards and criteria for associate and baccalaureate/graduate degree programs. Shift away from prescriptive process to continuous improvement process. Focus upon excellence in teaching and student learning outcomes (evidence-based). Focus upon the mission of the institution. Based on Baldrige National Quality Program and its Criteria for Performance Excellence.


Business Unit Accreditation

Cost is about $12,000.Timetable can be 18 – 24 months or up to 5 years.A preliminary questionnaire is followed by a self-study followed by a site visit followed by feedback.Ten year accreditation granted.A Process that Supports Your Success

Use of process for regional accreditation.A Mentor and Commissioner is provided to assist.Copies of self-studies can be provided.Private community of all schools in candidacy.


Business Unit Accreditation Process

Standards and criteria focus on teaching excellence.Teaching Excellence Award for faculty.Three affiliated honor societies for students.Individual faculty membership at each institution.Business Education Week sent each Friday.Annual and regional conferences offer educational tracks with suggested practices. Global Business Connections for faculty and student exchanges.

ACBSP Gateway

Part of desire to offer new products and services to meet unmet needs.Provide external validation of quality of accounting program as outlined earlier.Offer benefits of accreditation outlined earlier.One motivation is desire by NASBA to link state board decisions to accreditation agencies.Currently offered by AACSB.

A Review of ACBSP Specialized Accreditation in Accounting

Background

Standards adopted by baccalaureate/graduate degree membership in June 2006.Criteria to implement standards drafted during 2007 and presented to Board in November.Three schools began process of securing the separate accreditation in accounting in November 2007.Minor alternations may be made in June 2008.


Timetable

Only baccalaureate/graduate degree programs, not associate degree programs. Requires business accreditation and is linked.Does not create separate board or site visit, but is integrated with current processes.Site visit team does have additional member.Future bylaws change may include the addition of Board members.
