Martinez_Concentration Questions 1. Martha Graham’s “An Athlete of God” closes by describing the acrobat as “practicing living at that instant of danger. He does not choose to fall.” In what way does this describe the tandem of fear and faith experienced in our daily lives? What does it take to “choose” not to fall? As musicians we always fear making mistakes when we perform. Because of this, we practice our butts we off. We practice countless number of hours for only a few hours on stage. Acknowledging that, we have to make sure we know what we are capable of doing and performing. That way, when we’re on stage, the only thing that will screw us up, would be ourselves. In that scenario, we “choose” to fall. Another way we “choose” to fall is by not preparing ourselves for the performance. We choose to fall because of the lack of concentration, or by being too comfortable/cocky with yourself and the music. 2. Grazers likes to disrupt his comfort zone. Why? Do you have a similar practice of disrupting your comfort zone in music or in life? If yes, why? If not, why not? Life of a musician is to get out of our comfort zone. The reason we are in this business, is to get out of the comfort zone and follow our passion. Once we get comfortable we tend to lose interest and go find knew was to challenge ourselves. I choose to follow this life style as well. I like to challenge myself because it’s so much fun when something finally clicks in my head. That’s the reason I play music. 3. Anthony Fauci cites “three guiding principles that anchor [his] life.” A very bright and driven person, Fauci takes these principles seriously. What are they? How do they in uence his work as well as his day-to-day living? Fauci has a thirst for knowledge which leads him to strive for success. He believes that the best way to challenge himself is by doing his work for others, not just himself. So he works as hard as he can. He stays up a countless number of times doing research. He will never let himself be defeated at any challenge that comes his way. 4. How does Kamps distinguish herself as a spiritual person versus a religious person? She is spiritual because, she has found her calm state of mind. She enjoys living in the forest. She enjoys the peace and quiet, the
