(Jacqueline Grennon) Brooks and

(Martin G.) Brooks (1993) describe what assessment in a constructivist classroom looks like: Rather than saying "No" when a student does not give the exact answer being sought, the constructivist teacher attempts to understand the student's current thinking about the topic.

Page 3: Assessment in constructivist classroom

Through nonjudgmental questioning, the teacher

leads the student to construct new

understanding and acquire new skills.

Page 4: Assessment in constructivist classroom

Constructivists believe that assessment should be used

as a tool to enhance

both the student's learning and

the teacher's understanding of the student's

current understanding.

Page 5: Assessment in constructivist classroom

It should not be usedas an accountability tool

that makes some studentsfeel good about themselves

andcauses others to give up.

Page 6: Assessment in constructivist classroom

This presentationwill show light

to the important principles that guide the work of a constructivist teacher:

Page 7: Assessment in constructivist classroom

1Constructivist

teachers encourage and accept student

autonomy and initiative.

Page 8: Assessment in constructivist classroom

2Constructivist

teachers use raw data and primary

sources along with manipulative,

interactive, and physical materials.

Page 9: Assessment in constructivist classroom

3Constructivist teachers use

cognitive terminology such as "classify," "analyze,"

"predict," and "create" when framing tasks.

Page 10: Assessment in constructivist classroom

4Constructivist teachers allow

student responses to drive lessons, shift

instructional strategies, and alter

content.

Page 11: Assessment in constructivist classroom

5Constructivist teachers inquire about students'

understandings of concepts before

sharing their own understandings of those concepts.

Page 12: Assessment in constructivist classroom

6Constructivist

teachers encourage students to engage

in dialogue both with the

teacher and with one another.

Page 13: Assessment in constructivist classroom

7Constructivist teachers

encourage student inquiry by asking

thoughtful, open-ended questions and

encouraging students to ask questions of

each other.

Page 14: Assessment in constructivist classroom

8Constructivist teachers seek elaboration of students'

initial responses.

Page 15: Assessment in constructivist classroom

9Constructivist teachers

engage students in experiences that might

engender contradictions to their initial hypotheses and

then encourage discussion.

Page 16: Assessment in constructivist classroom

10Constructivist

teachers allow a waiting time after posing questions.

Page 17: Assessment in constructivist classroom

11Constructivist

teachers provide time

for studentsto construct

relationships and create metaphors.

Page 18: Assessment in constructivist classroom

12Constructivist

teachers nurture students'

natural curiositythrough frequent use of the learning cycle model (Brooks & Brooks,

1993).
