    YEAR 8 HISTORY ASSESSMENT TASK 1 (40%)

    THE VIKINGSOutcomes assessed:

    4.5 identifies the meaning, purpose and context of historical sources

    4.8 locates, selects and organises relevant information from a number of sources, including ICT, to conduct basic historicalresearch

    4.10 selects and uses appropriate oral and written forms, including ICT to communicate effectively about the past

    This task has THREE parts. Parts A and B are due Wk9 Friday 16

    September, Period4. Part C is due Term 4, Wk1 Tuesday 11 October,

    Part A: Research ONE of the following Viking trading towns. (Part A and

    B - 25 marks)

    Birka, Hedeby, Jelling, Kaupang, Jorvik (York), OR Dyflinn (Dublin)

    Students will be allocated one of the Viking trading towns above. The task is to find out the

    following about your Viking trading town by researching the archaeological record:

    1) Where is it located? Include a map.2) When did the Vikings settle in the area?3) What type of housing did the Vikings have?4) What type of work did the Vikings perform in this town?5) With which countries did this Viking town trade? Draw the trade routes on your map.6) What types of goods were traded?7) What types of goods were produced in this town?Part B: Research a Viking artefact from your town

    You are to choose ONE artefact made in your trading town (for example, this could

    include jewellery, weapons, tunics, boats, household items, fur items, luxury items,

    knives, Baltic amber etc)

    Sketch the artefact or include a picture of it Find out where the raw materials to produce this product came from (include

    reference to trade routes)

    Find out what the item was used for and who may have purchased it.

    Part C: Construct this artefact for a Viking market (15 marks)

    You are to make a model of your chosen Viking item which is historically correct and

    bring it to class on the allocated day. (10 marks) You will be expected to explain in a

    short talk to the class (3-5mins) what your item was used for, where it originated, who

    might have made it and who might havepurchased it.(5 marks)
