APPENDIX 12ULTRASONIC EXAMINATION OF WELDS (UT)
12-1 SCOPE
(a) This Appendix describes methods which shall beemployed when ultrasonic examination of welds isspecified in this Division.
(b) Article 4 of Section V shall be applied for detailrequirements in methods, procedures and qualifications, unless otherwise specified in this Appendix.
(c) Ultrasonic examination shall be performed inaccordance with a written procedure, certified by theManufacturer to be in accordance with the requirementsof T-150 of Section V.
12-2 CERTIFICATION OFCOMPETENCE OFNONDESTRUCTIVE EXAMINER
The Manufacturer shall certify that personnel per-forming and evaluating ultrasonic examinations requiredby this Division have been qualified and certified inaccordance with their employer’s written practice. SNT-TC-1A1 shall be used as a guideline for employers toestablish their written practice for qualification andcertification of their personnel. Alternatively, the ASNTCentral Certification Program (ACCP)1 or CP-1891 maybe used to fulfill the examination and demonstrationrequirements of SNT-TC-1A and the employer’s writtenpractice. Provisions for training, experience, qualifica-tion, and certification of NDE personnel shall be de-scribed in the Manufacturer’s Quality Control System(see Appendix 10).
12-3 ACCEPTANCE–REJECTIONSTANDARDS
These Standards shall apply unless other standards arespecified for specific applications within this Division.
1 Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A, “Personnel Qualificationand Certification in Nondestructive Testing,” ACCP, ASNT CentralCertification Program, and CP-189 are published by the American

Imperfections which produce a response greater than20% of the reference level shall be investigated to theextent that the operator can determine the shape, identity, and location of all such imperfections and evaluatethem in terms of the acceptance standards given in (a)and (b) below.
(a) Indications characterized as cracks, lack of fusion,or incomplete penetration are unacceptable regardlessof length.
(b) Other imperfections are unacceptable if the indica-tions exceed the reference level amplitude and havelengths which exceed:
(1) 1⁄4 in. (6 mm) for t up to 3⁄4 in. (19 mm);(2) 1⁄3t for t from 3⁄4 in. to 21⁄4 in. (19 mm to
57 mm);(3) 3⁄4 in. for t over 21⁄4 in. (57 mm).
where t is the thickness of the weld excluding anyallowable reinforcement. For a butt weld joining twomembers having different thicknesses at the weld, t isthe thinner of these two thicknesses. If a full penetrationweld includes a fillet weld, the thickness of the throatof the fillet shall be included in t.
12-4 REPORT OF EXAMINATION
The Manufacturer shall prepare a report of the ultra-sonic examination and a copy of this report shall beretained by the Manufacturer until the Manufacturer’sData Report has been signed by the Inspector. Thereport shall contain the information required by SectionV. In addition, a record of repaired areas shall benoted as well as the results of the reexamination ofthe repaired areas. The Manufacturer shall also maintaina record of all reflections from uncorrected areas havingresponses that exceed 50% of the reference level. Thisrecord shall locate each area, the response level, thedimensions, the depth below the surface, and the classi-fication.
