Asian Energy Demand and Competition

Fast growing market China and India big consumer of energy

importsAs China, most of India`s primary energy use

relies on coal, though significantly less (41% against 70%). More of its energy comes from oil (which India has to import mostly) and from combustion renewable and waste (up to 27%).

Asia`s energy source mix

International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) predicts an increase of the world’s primary energy need of 1.6 times between the year 2005 and 2030.

Especially coal and oil are the most important sources for Asian countries.

For example China has the highest consumption of coal, over 70 percent of its primary energy need.

As opposed to this, Korea and Japan are dependent on nuclear power with about 14 percent.

Asia`s energy source mix

Asia`s coal consumption in 2010: 2,000 million tons Gas consumption: 500 million tons Oil consumption: 1,200 million tons

Relationship between energy consumption and economic growth

Main factor for the production process is energy Highly industrialized nations have learned to separate

economic growth from proportional input of energy more efficient technology

Future energy supply in Asia

International Energy Agency (IEA): more than 50 percent of the growing world oil demand is due to the transportation sector until 2020.

due to the economic growth in Asia the energy needs will be covered until the mid of coming century

Factors for preservation of Asia`s energy security: - investments in the exploration of all energy

resources- enhancement of the energy resource management - force development of hydroelectric power stations

and other renewable resources - enhance the technological standards for clean coal

power

Nuclear power for Asia

Increase of nuclear power in China and India is about 5% per year

Case szenarios of economic development and resource development

EMPEROR OF BUSINESS- China grows peacefully and plays by the rules

EMPEROR OF THE WORLD- China acquires economic power so quickly

that it retains the ability to play by its own rules.CHINA AS BIGGER BRAZIL

- China's growth rate is short-lived and goes down.

EMPEROR OF ASIA- China grows, but only as fast as its neighbors

and finds itself jockeying for resources with India, Japan, and Russia
