BASIC TEACHINGS OF THE BUDDHABy BuddhaTranslated by Glenn Wallis

In Basic Teachings of the Buddha, Glenn Wallis selects sixteen essential dialogues drawn from

more than five thousand Pali-dialect suttas of theBuddhist canon. The result is a vibrant introductoryguide to studying Buddhist thought, applying itsprinciples to everyday life, and gaining a deeper understanding of Buddhist themes in modern literature. Focusing on the most crucial topics for today’s readers, Wallis presents writings that address modern psychological, religious, ethical, and philosophical concerns. This practical, inspir-ing, and engaging volume provides an overview of the history of Buddhism and an illuminatinganalysis of the core writings that personalizes thesuttas for each reader.

“In this masterful new commentary on the earliestBuddhist writings, Professor Wallis challenges uswith sixteen propositions about human existenceitself. Only in this way, he asserts, can modernreaders appreciate the Buddha’s analysis of the twotrajectories facing human beings—toward pain ortoward peace. Wallis offers fresh translations and areader’s guide to sixteen discourses that eloquentlyillustrate these choices and their implications forour time. All this is introduced by the author’slearned reflection on the idiom, meaning, and historical evolution of the Dhamma, Buddha’sdeepest insights. Glenn Wallis brings wisdom andcompassion to this work of scholarship. Everyoneshould read this book.”

ZEN ENLIGHTENMENTOrigins and MeaningBy Heinrich Dumoulin

Enlightenment, the cosmic experience of universalunity, is a notoriously elusive concept in Zen.

Here, the renowned scholar Heinrich Dumoulintraces the development of Zen and the concept ofenlightenment from its origins in India through its development in China to its fruition in Japan.Delineating the Buddhist origins, as well as theTaoist and yogic influences, he traces the historicalpath Zen has followed, with special emphasis given to the development of koan practice and thewritings of the great Japanese Zen master Dogen(1200-1253). He then brings the experience tolife by presenting, in his own words, the enlighten-ment experiences of a number of contemporarypractitioners of Zen.

“A lucid and illuminating presentation of the essential nature of Zen by an outstanding scholar. This book is an invaluable bridge between Eastand West.”

—Masao Abe, author of Zen and Western Thought

“This book not only makes for instructive and valuable reading, it is also clearly and beautifully written.”

POEMS OF THE LATE T’ANGTranslated and with an Introduction by A.C. Graham

Classical Chinese poetry reached its pinnacleduring the T’ang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.),

and the poets of the late T’ang—a period of growingpolitical turmoil and violence—are especially notable for combining striking formal innovationwith raw emotional intensity.

A. C. Graham’s slim but indispensable anthology of late T’ang poetry begins with Tu Fu, commonlyrecognized as the greatest Chinese poet of all, whosefinal poems and sequences lament the pains of exilein images of crystalline strangeness. It continueswith the work of six other masters, including the“cold poet” Meng Chiao, who wrote of retreat fromcivilization to the remoteness of the high mountains;the troubled and haunting Li Ho, who, as Grahamwrites, cultivated a “wholly personal imagery of ghosts, blood, dying animals, weeping statues, whirlwinds, the will-o’-the-wisp”; and the shimmeringly strangepoems of illicit love and Taoist initiation of theenigmatic Li Shang-yin.

Offering the largest selection of these poets’ workavailable in English in a translation that is a classicin its own right, Poems of the Late T’ang also in-cludes Graham’s searching essay “The Translation of Chinese Poetry” as well as helpful notes on eachof the poets and on many of the individual poems.

“Angus Graham was widely recognized as theworld’s premier authority on classical philosophyand linguistics, as well as a gifted translator of philosophy and poetry and a prominent exponentof the ancient Chinese view of life to the Western world.”

GANDHI & CHURCHILL: The Epic RivalryThat Destroyed an Empire and Forged Our AgeBy Arthur Herman

In this fascinating and meticulously researchedbook, bestselling historian Arthur Herman sheds

new light on two of the most universally recogniza-ble icons of the twentieth century, and reveals howtheir forty-year rivalry sealed the fate of India andthe British Empire.

They were born worlds apart: Winston Churchill toBritain’s most glamorous aristocratic family, Mohan-das Gandhi to a pious middle-class household in aprovincial town in India. Yet Arthur Herman revealshow their lives and careers became intertwined asthe twentieth century unfolded. Both men would goon to lead their nations through harrowing trialsand two world wars—and become locked in a fiercecontest of wills that would decide the fate of countries, continents, and ultimately an empire.

“Arthur Herman offers a balanced and elegant accountwhich captures both Churchill’s generosity of spiritand Gandhi’s greatness of soul. While recognizingtheir faults, he shows what motivated them andmade them great—with impressive research that inChurchill’s words leaves “no stone unturned, nocutlet uncooked.” The last two chapters, and theauthor’s Conclusion, are alone worth the price ofwhat must become the standard work on the subject.”

—Richard M. Langworth, Editor, Finest Hour, The Churchill Centre

“Gandhi & Churchill is a powerful tale of the monu-mental clash between two of the giants of thetwentieth century. Set against the backdrop of war and conflict, this brilliant dual biography ofstrong-willed visionaries locked in a struggle eachbelieved in makes for compelling reading. ArthurHerman has written a masterful and superbly wellresearched account of the lives of two men whohave had a profound influence on the world inwhich we live in today that will long stand as atestament to their legacy.”

THE ADVENTURES OF AMIR HAMZABy Ghalib Lakhnavi and Abdullah BilgramiTranslated by Musharraf Ali Farooqi

In the tradition of such beloved classics as TheThousand and One Nights and The Persian Shahnameh,

here is the first unabridged English translation of amajor Indo-Persian epic, The Adventures of Amir Hamza(Dastan-e Amir Hamza). A panoramic tale of magicand passion, and a classic hero’s odyssey, Adventuresof Amir Hamza, has captivated much of the world.

This Islamic saga dates back hundreds of years, perhapsto as early as the seventh century, when oral narrativesof the deeds of the prophet Muhammad’s uncle AmirHamza spread through Arabia, Persia, and the Indiansubcontinent, expanding into a marvelous chronicleof warriors, kings, tricksters, fairies, courtesans, andmagical creatures. The definitive one-volume Urdutext by Ghalib Lakhnavi and Abdullah Bilgrami appeared toward the end of the nineteenth century, but English translations of this text have alwaysbeen censored and abridged—until now.

In Musharraf Ali Farooqi’s faithful rendition, TheAdventures of Amir Hamza is captured with all itscolorful action, ribaldry, and fantastic elements intact.Appreciated as the seminal Islamic epic or enjoyedas a sweeping tale as rich and inventive as Homer’sepic sagas, The Adventures of Amir Hamza is an ex-traordinary creation and a true literary treasure.

“It’s an extraordinary feat. Farooqi has translatedinto English what most of us thought was untrans-latable. The adventures of Hamza have beguiledreaders in many languages, from Iran to Malaysia, for centuries. As such this translation from Urdushould interest all students of Eastern literatures.”

NIXON AND MAOThe Week That Changed the WorldBy Margaret MacMillan

With the publication of her landmark volumeParis 1919, Margaret MacMillan was praised

as “a superb writer who can bring history to life”(The Philadelphia Inquirer). Now she brings her extraordinary gifts to one of the most importantsubjects today—the relationship between theUnited States and China—and one of the most sig-nificant moments in modern history—Nixon’s visitto China. Weaving together fascinating anecdotesand insights, an understanding of Chinese andAmerican history, and the momentous events of anextraordinary time, this brilliantly-written booklooks at one of the transformative moments of theTwentieth Century and casts new light on one ofthe United States’ key relationships in the Twenty-First Century.

“[MacMillan] candidly describes the brutality ofMao’s regime, pointing out that even the courtlyZhou Enlai, so respected by the Americans and by MacMillan herself, was responsible for multipledeaths and imprisonments. She shows why Nixonand Kissinger kept their approaches to the Chinesesecret from allies and most of their own advisers, while suggesting that they relished the secrecy toomuch, carrying it beyond what was necessary. Shereveals how generous the Americans were in givingthe Chinese sensitive intelligence on Soviet militarydeployments, and how explicitly they promised towithdraw their own military forces from Taiwanand, eventually, South Vietnam. Her portrayals ofkey personalities throughout, as one might expectfrom the author of Paris 1919, are superb.”

DRIVEN OUTThe Forgotten War Against Chinese AmericansBy Jean Pfaelzer

• 2007 Choice Outstanding Academic Title

In Driven Out Jean Pfaelzer details a largely forgottenepisode in America’s past. She reveals how, beginning

in 1848, lawless citizens and duplicitous politicianspurged dozens of communities in California andthe Pacific Northwest of thousands of Chinese resi-dents—and how the victims bravely responded.

In town after town, Chinese miners and merchants, lumberjacks and field workers, prostitutes and merchants’ wives, were gathered up at gunpoint andmarched out of town. But the Chinese fought back, prosecuting white vigilantes, demanding the rightto own land, and winning access to public educationfor their children.

Driven Out is a story of hitherto unknown racialpogroms, purges, roundups, and brutal terror, butalso a record of valiant resistance and community.

“Thanks to this gripping narrative, Chinese immi-grants to the Far West—so long overlooked—nowstand front and center in the saga of the strugglefor civil rights in these United States.”

— Kevin Starr, University of Southern California; Author, California, A History

“Driven Out: the Forgotten War Against ChineseAmericans is a meticulously researched and veryreadable recounting of America’s systematic effortto purge all Chinese immigrants, from the mid-19thinto the early-20th centuries. Jean Pfaelzer documentshundreds of cases in which the Chinese were lynched, maimed, burned out of their neighborhoods, andforced at gunpoint to leave mining camps, smallvillages, Indian reservations, and Chinatowns….This is a valuable addition to our understanding ofthe making of modern America.”

–Franklin Odo, Director, Smithsonian Institution Asian Pacific American Program

“Too few Americans have any idea that these events mark the nation’s past. Pfaelzer capably reconstructs a shameful history.”

THE SOUVENIRA Daughter Discovers Her Father’s WarBy Louise Steinman

Louise Steinman’s American childhood in thefifties was bound by one unequivocal condition:

“Never mention the war to your father.” That si-lence sustained itself until the fateful day Steinmanopened an old ammunition box left behind after herparents’ death. In it she discovered nearly 500 let-ters her father had written to her mother during hisservice in the Pacific War and a Japanese flag mys-teriously inscribed to Yoshio Shimizu.

Setting out to determine the identity of YoshioShimizu and the origins of the silken flag, Steinmandiscovered the unexpected: a hidden side of her fa-ther, the green soldier who achingly left his preg-nant wife to fight for his life in a brutal 165-daycampaign that changed him forever. Her journey toreturn the “souvenir” to its owner not only takesSteinman on a passage to Japan and the Philippines, but also returns her to the age of her father’s inno-cence, where she learned of the tender and expres-sive man she’d never known.

Steinman writes with the same poignant immediacyher father did in his letters. Together their stories inThe Souvenir create an evocative testament to theways in which war changes one generation andshapes another.

“Louise Steinman has accomplished a great feat of history.”

—Maxine Hong Kingston

“An intimate and powerful story of the effects of war.”

—James Bradley

“Throughout The Souvenir, Steinman deftly interweaves her father’s story with her own, andadds depth to both narratives by subtly slipping ininsights gleaned from research on the psychologicalimpact of combat. The result is an exceptionalbook that draws its strength from the complexitiesit explores.”

LAST NIGHT I DREAMED OF PEACEThe Diary of Dang Thuy TramBy Dang Thuy Tram; Translated by Andrew X. PhamIntroduction by Frances FitzGerald

“Last night, I dreamed that Peace was established…”

— Dang Thuy Tram, Vietnam, June 4, 1968

At the age of twenty-four, Dang Thuy Tram volunteered to serve as a doctor in a National

Liberation Front (Viet Cong) battlefield hospital inthe Quang Ngai Province. Two years later she waskilled by American forces not far from where sheworked. Written between 1968 and 1970, her diaryspeaks poignantly of her devotion to family and friends, the horrors of war, her yearning for her high schoolsweetheart, and her struggle to prove her loyalty to her country. At times raw, at times lyrical andyouthfully sentimental, her voice transcends cul-tures to speak of her dignity and compassion and ofher challenges in the face of the war’s ceaseless fury.

The American officer who discovered the diary soonafter Dr. Tram’s death was under standing orders todestroy all documents without military value. As hewas about to toss it into the flames, his Vietnamesetranslator said to him, “Don’t burn this one… It hasfire in it already.” Against regulations, the officerpreserved the diary and kept it for thirty-five years. In the spring of 2005, a copy made its way to Dr.Tram’s elderly mother in Hanoi. The diary was soonpublished in Vietnam, causing a national sensation.Never before had there been such a vivid and per-sonal account of the long ordeal that had consumedthe nation’s previous generations.

Translated by Andrew X. Pham and with an introductionby Pulitzer Prize winner Frances FitzGerald, LastNight I Dreamed of Peace is an extraordinary docu-ment that narrates one woman’s personal and politicalstruggles. Above all, it is a story of hope in the mostdire of circumstances—told from the perspective of our historic enemy but universal in its power tocelebrate and mourn the fragility of human life.

FIRST INTO NAGASAKIThe Censored Eyewitness Dispatches onPost-Atomic Japan and Its Prisoners of WarBy George Weller; Edited with an Essay by Anthony Weller;Foreword by Walter Cronkite

At the war’s end in 1945, General MacArthur’smedia blackout forbade correspondents from

entering Nagasaki or Hiroshima. However, thiswouldn’t stop the intrepid Pulitzer Prize-winningreporter George Weller, who broke away and reachedNagasaki just weeks after the atomic bomb hit.Boldly presenting himself as a U.S. colonel, Wellerset out to explore the devastation, interviewinghelpless, baffled doctors and entering Allied POWcamps. But all was lost when his dispatches werecensored upon their arrival in the States. Now, afterWeller’s death, these pages have been rediscoveredand compiled for the first time—a moving, unparal-leled look at the bomb that killed more than 70,000people and ended WWII.

“Unearthed at last after six decades, George Weller’sdaring reportage from the ruins of Nagasaki has madean unforgettable and momentous book. From the re-mains of a scorched, fractured city to the unfathomabletragedy of Allied POWs in Japanese custody, hechanneled his five senses straight to the page, givingeloquent testimony to the martyrs, American andJapanese alike, who were trapped in the Pacificwar’s bloody fun-house.”

—James D. Hornfischer, author of Ship of Ghosts

and The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors

“An invaluable historical resource for those seekingthe truth...Weller interviewed eyewitnesses, survivors, doctors, and imprisoned Allied POWs and wrote abrilliant series of reports...These exceptionally im-portant eyewitness accounts, collected and organizedby a tireless war reporter dedicated to making thehorrible truth known to the American public... vividlyrelate the everyday inhumanity of the Pacific war.Despite the sanitizing impulses of U.S. military censors,George Weller’s words continue to speak eloquentlyabout the horrors of war across a gap of sixty years.”

ORTHODOX CHINESE BUDDHISMA Contemporary Chan Master’s Answers to Common QuestionsBy Chan Master Sheng Yen; Translated by Otto Chang and Douglas Gildow

www.randomhouse.com/academic12

As a well-known scholar and meditation mas-ter—His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama called

him “extremely modest, a true spiritual practitionerof deep and broad learning”—Sheng Yen isuniquely qualified to guide Western seekers intothe world of contemporary Chinese Buddhism.

Written while the author was secluded in solitaryretreat in southern Taiwan, Orthodox Chinese Bud-dhism provides a wealth of theory and simple, clearguidelines for practicing this increasingly popularform of spirituality. One of the most influentialBuddhist books in the Chinese language, it exploresa wide range of subjects, from distinguishing coreteachings from outdated cultural norms to bridgingthe gap between Western and Chinese traditions. Inthe process, it also addresses to what extent Bud-dhism should be westernized to fit new culturalconditions, and whether westernization necessarilyleads to a “dumbing” down of Buddhism.

In addition to the translation of the complete original text, this edition of Orthodox Chinese Buddhism includes new annotations, appendixes, and a glossary designed for the Western reader.
