As we are aware, there is demand for increased CSR and environment accountability on part ofthe corporate worldwide. It is important for corporate to recognise that their progress comes fromsociety and they must give back to society its fair due.

As an organisation, Asian Paints has understood and implemented these 'Business Basics' fromthe beginning. It has produced cost-effective goods in a manner that is ethically, socially andenvironmentally responsible, and has always been sensitive about the impact of its business onall its stakeholders. At the same time, the Group has gone beyond the awareness of these socialimpacts by being willing to act upon them, to bring about a progressive change across the regionsand comm unities within the influence of its operations and beyond. This has been one of thereasons, apart from the good performance on the business front, why the group has been able togain a definitive mindshare of the stakeholders.

Over the last few years we have taken considerable strides forward and successfully pushed ourCSR programme to a higher level for the benefit of the community. One of our key initiatives is inthe area of water management. Our small beginnings in this area have now taken a big leap withthe setting up of the Total Water Management Centre at our Bhandup facility in Mumbai (India).

Another of our initiatives focuses on the care for the elderly sections of the society. We have nowhelped over 100,000 senior citizens in a short span of just two years which only strengthened our

resolve to keep doing good work in the area of age care.

All our plants are ISO 14000 certified and we have also received the sword of honour award fromthe British Safety council which emphasises our focus on environment and safety.

Asian Paints approaches the environment issue from the perspective of waste minimisation andconservation of resources. Thus, the continued attempt is to reuse, recycle and eliminate waste, which results in less and less waste being generated. Accordingly, our material losses inmanufacturing have been reduced substantially over the last few years.

Further, the company's four paint plants and the two chemical plants have the ISO 14001certification for environment management standards. The company's latest manufacturing facilitywhich is situated at Sriperumbudur near Chennai will be certified for ISO 14001 in this financial

    year 2006-07.

All our paint plants have achieved 'zero industrial discharge' capability. This has been achievedby the installation of upgraded effluent treatment facilities and installation of reverse osmosisplants in conjunction with appropriate recycling and reuse schemes. Our emulsion manufacturingfacility has also achieved 'zero waste' status. We have adopted the principles of "greenproductivity".

Some of our innovative schemes which enhance green productivity are dealer tinting systemswhich has resulted in large batch sizes ; bulk storage facility for monomers which reduceswastage; Use of natural gas which is a cleaner fuel ; solvent recovery plants have been set upwhich has resulted in zero reduction of solvent disposal ; Improved incinerating systems andreverse osmosis.

    The Sword of Honour

The company has made significant investments in the area of safety over the past several years. It's steadfast commitment to safety is reinforced by the fact that four of Asian Paints plants wereconferred with the 'Sword of Honour' by the British Safety Council for the second time in quicksuccession. The British Safety Council is the world's leading occupational health, safety andenvironmental organizations, working closely with the world's leading companies in developingsafe systems for work. The "Sword of Honour", instituted by the BSC, is recognized the worldover as the pinnacle of achievement in safety management systems.

The awards were presented by His Excellency, the President ofIndia, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. The CII Award for National Energy Conservation is yet anothertestimony of Asian Paints commitment towards the continual improvement in our work process tohelp the environment through the manufacturing excellence programme.

"Water is precious. Every drop counts."

Fresh water is a limited and scarce resource that's often taken for granted. Consider this, according to an MMRDA report, Mumbai's present water demand, 3026 MLD (Million Litres Daily)is expected to rise to 7950 MLD by 2011, today the water supply being only 2500 MLD.

Ever imagined a time in the future when there won't be water for even drinking, leave alonewasting? That time is nearer than you think. And more than anything else, our mindless wastageof water is prime reason. Today we are on the brink of water scarcity.

We, at Asian Paints, understand this and it's our endeavour to create awareness on this alarmingissue.

So Save Water today. Water will save you tomorrow.

Our effort to help you conserve water.

Asian Paints has built a Total Water Management (TWM) Centre, at its Bhandup manufacturingfacility, which is a first of its kind in the entire country.

The TWM centre showcases live working models on water conservation and rainwaterharvesting.

Asian Paints provides expertise to citizens free of charge to implement Rainwater harvesting andtotal water management concepts.

The water management schemes could be designed in phases, so investments are notsignificant. Also a payback period can be determined for investments.

So if you are interested in implementing rain-water harvesting and total water managementsolutions in your society, institution on your organization, do let us know. We would be glad toprove you all expertise at no cost. You can also visit the TWM centre to understand the various

    concepts of total water management

    Age Care

Age Care is another focus area by Asian Paints in its CSR activities. The company hadconducted various health camps for the aged. In India, the focus of such health camps hasalways been around the plants where the employees reside. Taking this into consideration, AsianPaints has started MMU (Mobile Medicare Unit) in Kasna, Patancheru & Ahmedabad. MMU hasmade it possible to reach the doorsteps of the needy and provide treatment for various diseases

Over 2000 people have already visited the Total WaterManagement Centre.

Till date Asian Paints has influenced citizens to harvest over100 million litres of rain water.

We have now impacted over 100,000 needy senior citizens injust two years through our initiatives in age care providingthem with medical care at their door steps through MobileMedicare units.
