Executive Summary 1

While most medical aesthetic markets are experiencing robust growth worldwide, a

truly bright spot is in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, which continues to expand more dramatically than any other area. This is because more people seek cosmetic treatments

with the main demographic drivers of aging patients, disposable income that is rising, and aesthetic practitioners that have a more advanced tool set encompassing less invasive,

non-surgical solutions.

For all of the above reasons and more, the APAC region aesthetic markets represent a major opportunity for global manufacturers.

Total Asian sales of all aesthetic products and equipment reached nearly $2.1 billion in 2017 and are expected to increase by 13.2% per year through 2022. In 2017, Asian sales

of energy-based devices totaled $423 million and are expected to rise by 8.2% per year through 2022. At $255 million in 2017, sales of body shaping/skin tightening devices are

considerably lower, but the expected CAGR is estimated to be much higher at 16.9%, as physicians increasingly embrace these technologies and the APAC region sees more

product launches. In 2017, Asian sales of cosmetic neurotoxins reached $476 million and through 2022, annual growth will be strong at 16.2% per year as manufacturers continue to

expand their distribution. Sales of dermal fillers reached $507 million in 2017 and are

anticipated to rise by 11.6% per year through 2022.

China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan show some of the most active growth, although

Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines have started to come alive. “Compared with other world regions, APAC is one of the fastest growing and that's a very healthy trend,”

stated Fred He, business development director at Bloomage Biotechnology Corp., Ltd. (Beijing, China). “In mainland China, the sheer number of potential customers is still growing

in a big way. Even when compared with South America, medical aesthetics in APAC is healthier and with a good overall economic future.”

Throughout Asia but excluding Australia and New Zealand, the number one

treatment is for skin-related problems. Facial and body rejuvenation, treatments that address pigmentary and vascular issues, and skin lightening procedures are widespread.

In Australia and New Zealand, there is more of a Western approach and attitude towards procedures, notably body contouring, wrinkle and fat reduction and solutions to

photodamage concerns.

In Australia and New Zealand, non-invasive cosmetic treatments are routinely

treated like any regular beauty treatment. “Injectables and laser hair removal are the new facials and waxing,” said Gavin Dimitri, managing director at i-Medix Pty, Ltd., a wholesale

and distribution company specializing in energy-based aesthetic products and devices in

Bulleen, Victoria, Australia. “As a result, the market continues to grow. Cosmetic surgery probably still has some stigma amongst the wider population and the cost is quite

prohibitive, so that growth is much slower.”

On the business / manufacturing side, companies entering the market —

predominantly from the U.S. and Europe — have been moving further away from using middle-man local distributors to sell their products and devices, and are going direct.

Allergan, for instance, recently established a China-based presence in the region, which includes an expansive training / education facility.

Among practices and clinics, non-invasive approaches remain more popular than

invasive or surgical procedures. In the niche markets, vaginal rejuvenation remains a strong, growing segment with an increasing number of device manufacturers entering the

marketplace. China remains the biggest market in Asia for aesthetic devices and is the fastest growing, as well.

The overall regional economy is strong, expressed Robert Ruck, president, Asia Pacific at Candela, “And it has even picked up over the last couple of years. Late last year

and early this year saw a lot more clinic openings, in Indonesia and especially in China, which is still leading and the biggest and the fastest growing.”

As stated by William Kelley, a global business consultant and former vice president,

Europe, Middle East & Africa at Cynosure, Inc., “After the U.S., Asia is the big plum, especially because of mainland China, as well as Korea and Japan. I’m guessing that when

you put those three together that is probably 70% of the overall market in APAC.”

Page 13: AsiaAestheticStudy2018-Executive Summary 010119 · Any use which a reader makes of this report or any reliance on or decisions to be made ... Mr. Moretti is also founder of THE Aesthetic

Recently, geopolitics and trade wars have impacted the region, which is affecting

the medical aesthetic industry. “When President Trump started talking about tariffs on China it had a ripple effect. Some economies in APAC have started to see some downturn,” Mr.

Kelley continued. “Korea, China and Japan are the biggest markets. From what I'm hearing and seeing, there is a slump among companies that are feeling the pinch. These are mostly

laser companies, but eventually everybody will start feeling it.”

Because of the new tariffs taking effect in late 2018 and going forward possibly

indefinitely, companies are looking at how they can do business differently in some ways. For instance, move final assembly to China or shift manufacturing to countries outside of

the U.S., so that they can avoid the tariffs.”

Long-term, things look very positive, Mr. Kelley said. “Physicians are still interested in new technology and they are still interested in new procedures. From facial rejuvenation

to treating acne or wrinkles or tattoo removal, they are all interested in those technologies and procedures. They are willing to spend the money to buy equipment to do these

treatments. They are also trying to be competitive. Good physicians cannot survive if they don’t have the equipment that their competitors have.”
