Construction … building our future together

Today’s construction is far more than just brick and mortar

structures. It is about enhanced quality, functionality, performance

and convenience. There is a larger shift in the industry from job-site

to dry-mix mortar to deliver enhanced quality to buildings.

Renovation construction, large scale adoption of machine application,

and green construction are driving the markets in Europe and North

America. Emerging markets are witnessing very high construction

activity. These markets have some specific needs and challenges,

such as extremely hot or cold temperatures that hinder quality of

construction. Products from Ashland transform innovation in

science to quality and value to meet these exact needs of the

construction industry.

Innovative solutions to meet your requirementsAshland Specialty Ingredients provide a wide portfolio of innovative products that enhance quality and performance to different applications, and bring value to our customers.

Culminal™ and Combizell™ cellulose ethersCulminal and Combizell cellulose ethers help dry mortars to be applied more easily and perform better. Both products provide water retention and cohesiveness to mixtures. Key mortar benefits include:

• Controlled thickening

• Adjusted water demand and improved workability

• Good open time and pot life

• Reduced sag and increased strength

• Compatibility with different electrolytes such as salts and alkali

Ashland Aquatherm™ specialty water-soluble polymers Ashland Aquatherm is a hot temperature-stable specialty polymer for skim coat and EIFS applications.

• Loss of water particles is a critical issue with mortar applications in high temperature environment, and Ashland Aquatherm provides high water retention even in temperatures above 40 deg Celcius.

• Using Ashland Aquatherm will deliver excellent workability, open time, and pot life for EIFS mortars in high temperatures

• For skim coats application, Ashland Aquatherm delivers good workability, no crack formation, and high abrasion resistance in high temperatures

Aquapas™ redispersible powdersAquapas redispersible powders, used along with the recommended cellulose ethers from Ashland, provide a host of advantages to various mortar application areas.

• Excellent open time, workability, sag-resistance and tensile strength for Cementitious Tile Adhesives

• Improved efficiency of EIFS mortar with longer embedding time, creamy workability, and low set retardation

• Reduced bleeding, excellent tensile and compressive strength, and superior mortar stability of self-leveling compounds

• Innovative Aquapas redispersible powder products provide high EIFS strength with the styrene board. Enhanced bond strength provides formulators an opportunity to reduce cement content in their formulations without compromising bond strength, thereby potentially lowering formulation cost

• New Aquapas grades allow for excellent sag resistance and workability while using non-modified cellulose ethers, and eliminate the need for starch ethers

Natrovis™ and Nexton™ hydroxyethylcellulose ethers Natrovis and Nexton cellulose ethers provide optimal thickening, working time, smooth workability, good yield and ease of handling for many latex based applications such as, pasty tile adhesives, pasty skim coats, and joint compounds.

Jaypol™ acrylatesJaypol polymers are acrylic-based polymers that are grouped into two categories – dispersants and rheology modifiers.

• Jaypol AS series works as Alkali swellable emulsion thickener, which prevents sedimentation and sagging. It provides high yield value and finds use in applications such as wall putties and latex based renders.

• Jaypol AL series works as liquid dispersion polymers that provide excellent rheology control and thickening effect. It finds use in dispersion based tile adhesive application.

• Jaypol S and A series are Sodium or Ammonium based dispersion agents, respectively, and finds use in dispersion based render, wall putty, and latex based tile adhesives.

BiocidesMicro-organisms can spoil a product and change its characteristics. The effects include

• Growth on surface

• Viscosity break down

• Discoloration

Nuosept™ and Bodoxin™ biocides provide solutions for long term efficacy across a broad spectrum of microorganisms, enhanced fungicidal activity, and effective protection against pseudomonas. These biocides are VOC-free water-based dispersions that find use in liquid tile adhesives, joint compounds and wall putties.

Fungitrol biocides provide benefits such as film preservation, high performance against fungi and algae, and are free of CMR, AOX and VOC. These biocides find use in silicon resin renders, gypsum plaster boards, skim coat, and tile grouts.

Construction additivesAshland has a wide range of companion products such as Aqualon™ ST starch ethers and rheology modifiers, Silipon™air entraining agents, Silipur™ and Drew™ defoamers, that work with our cellulose ethers and redispersible powders to provide excellent quality, performance, convenience and value to our customers.

Benefits

Ceramic Tile Adhesives

From cement-based to latex-based tile adhesives, Ashland’s Culminal and Aquapas additives improve water retention, working time, rheology, sag resistance, and other functional properties of the tile adhesives.

Gypsum Plasters Additives like Culminal MC and Aquapas RDP increase sag resistance and balance rheology for gypsum plasters to provide a protective, decorative and insulating finish.

EIFS Culminal MC and Aquapas RDP lead to smooth application, strength and durability. They also provide high sag resistance and greater adhesion to the insulating slabs.

Renders Products like Culminal MC, Aquapas RDP and starch ethers enhance the strength and durability of renders while finishing interior and exterior walls.

Self-leveling Compounds

Culminal MC, Aquapas RDP and Silipur defoamers help self-leveling compounds provide an even and smooth surface on concrete or screens for tiles, carpet or wood.

Masonry and Mortar Cements

Culminal MC and other masonry additives enhance the workability and strength of mortar cements used in the construction of brick, block and veneer walls.

Joint Compounds and Fillers

Culminal MC and Natrovis HEC provide water retention and Silipur acts as set retarders for joint fillers.

Ashland also offers a wide range of Jaypol acrylates and biocides like Bodoxin AO biocide, Nuosept preservative and Fungitrol biocide for various construction applications.
