A scream filled the room! High and piping. It was the worst scream I’d ever

heard in my life. It was obviously the scream of someone who specialised in

screaming. Mrs Cornelia.

‘My diamond ring’s gone! she screamed.

No, no, I’m rushing ahead much too fast. Lots happened before Mrs Cornelia

screamed. I must start at the beginning. My mum and dad had bought an

old cabin at Sun Top. We were on our way to the cabin. That was where it all

began. So that’s where I’ll begin too.

Chapter 1: A brilliant younger brother

When we got off the train, a fat little man with a dark, bushy moustache was

standing at the station. He was eating a hamburger.

Dad waved and the man crammed the rest of the burger into his mouth.

‘You must be the Bark family! I’m to drive you to your new cabin! My

name’s Per Lunde. But you can call me Lunde Per. That’s what my wife does.’

Lunde Per smiled and some crumbs from the burger fell out his mouth

and landed up in his beard.

‘Is she at back in Italy at the moment?’ Tim asked.

He’s so small and thin that many people don’t notice him at first.

Lunde Per looked at him in amazement.

‘How did you know she’s Italian?’ he asked.

‘Lots of people put their surname in front of their first name in Italy,’ Tim

said.‘That’s quite true,’ Lunde Per said. ‘But how did you know she’s away?’

‘It’s only ten o’clock,’ Tim said. ‘But you’re eating a hamburger. I reckon

that’s because you haven’t eaten any breakfast. And then you’ve smoked at

least one cigarette in bed today, even though you really have stopped smok-

ing.’‘How on earth can you...’ he began.

‘Smokers get yellow fingers,’ Tim said. ‘You haven’t got that. But you’ve got

ash in your beard. And you smell of smoke. If your wife had been home, you

would have eaten breakfast with her. And you wouldn’t have smoked.’

‘Goodness gracious me!’ Lunde Per said. ‘But how did you know she’s in

Italy?’‘I guessed,’ Tim said. ‘I’m not some sort of genius.’

But he was wrong about that.I’ve got a brilliant younger brother.

You can see that from his ears.They stick straight out and pick up every sound.

His nose recognises every smell.His eyes are large, green and round. He hardly ever closes them.

Even though he’s only eight, he sees everything that’s going on around him.

Tim’s just as smart as master detective Sherlock Holmes.

He’s a specialist at solving mysteries.Although he’s terribly irritating, I’m really proud of him.

That’s why I’ve written about the cases he’s solved.

This is the story of the first one.The very first case for Master Detective Tim & Co.

A NEW EASY-TO-READ MYSTERY about the friends Kaja and Stine!

One dark evening Stine goes to visit Kaja. On the way, she hears a lot of strange noises, but finds reasonable explanations for all of them. Erlend tenker seg om en ganske lang stund. Jeg holder pusten og venter. Smiler så søtt jeg kan til henne. Jeg hører at Helle fniser litt lenger oppe i bakken.

«Greit,» sier Erlend til slutt. Hun virker fornøyd og litt overrasket. Hun ser glad ut,

faktisk. (PS: Det er mulig Erlend ikke kommer til å være like glad seinere i dag. Hun hadde nemlig helt rett i at det ikke finnes gullfyrverkeritopper. Men det blir hennes problem.)

«Gi meg toppen, da,» sier jeg. Jeg vil ha den blå toppen nå. Men plutselig virker det som

om Erlend ikke vil gi den fra seg likevel. Hun ser opp bakken mot Helle, som står der og prøver å se alvorlig ut.

«HER!» roper Erlend plutselig og kaster toppen på meg. Den treffer meg rett på skuldra og faller i snøen. (Ikke at

det gjorde vondt, eller noe, men FREKKE LUS! Det gjorde hun med vilje.)

«Takk, dust,» sier jeg og plukker opp toppen.

Så holder jeg den opp mot himmelen og beundrer min fiiiiine, blå fyrverkeritopp, før jeg legger den i jakkelomma sammen med resten. Erlend sparker en isklump så den fyker nedover veien, før hun leter videre etter topper.

«Drittsekk,» sier hun lavt og snur seg bort fra meg. «Hva sa du, VRÆLEN?!» sier jeg og skal akkurat til å

kaste meg etter henne, men så blir vi avbrutt:«Hei, dere, kom hit og se!»Det er Helle som roper. Så jeg og Erlend løper om kapp

bort til henne for å se hva det er.12

«Gi meg den, den er MIN!» sier jeg til Erlend og strekker fram votten. «Jeg sa det først, at jeg skal ha alle de blå. Hit med den!»

«Men Oda, jeg fant den, jo,» sutrer Erlend. «Jeg vil også ha blå lys på treet mitt.»

Erlend vil ikke gi fra seg den blå fyrverkeritoppen. De blå er de sjeldneste og fineste toppene. ALLE vil ha dem. Men jeg sa det faktisk først, så jeg har førsteretten.

«Ok, Erlend, hva om vi inngår en avtale?» sier jeg. (Noen ganger må jeg bare sette ned foten og vise Erlend hvem som er sjefen. Jeg er tross alt eldst. Og smartest. Og jeg skal ha de blå toppene. Punktum.)

«Hva da?» spør Erlend mistenksomt.«Hvis jeg får alle de blå toppene, så skal du få alle gull-

toppene vi finner,» sier jeg og smiler. «Ok?»«Næhæhæi, for det finnes ikke gulltopper, så!»

fine!» sier jeg. «Og du skal få alle dem, hvis jeg får alle de blå. Greit?»

«Men hvis de er så superfine, hvorfor vil ikke du ha dem, da?» spør Erlend.

«Jeg ville bare være grei mot deg. Er ikke det lov heller nå, da? Du er jo lillesøstera mi, ikke sant,» sier jeg.

(Sometimes I just have to put my foot down and show Erlend who’s the boss. I am in fact the eldest. And I’m the smartest. And I will have the blue tops. Period.)‘What kind of a deal?’ Erlend asks, suspiciously.‘If I get all the blue ones, you can have all the gold tops we find,’ I say and smile. ‘OK?’‘Noooooo! Because gold tops don’t exist!’ Erlend shouts back at me.‘Oh yes, they do! They’re brand new this year, in fact, and they’re super nice!’ I say. ‘And you can have ALL of them if I get all the blue ones. Deal?’‘But if they’re so super nice, why don’t YOU want them, huh?’ Erlend asks.‘I just wanted to be nice to you. Is there suddenly some kind of rule against that? You are after all my little sister, aren’t you?’ I say.Erlend thinks about this for quite some time. I hold my breath and wait. I give her my sweetest smile. I can hear Helle giggling from further up the hill.‘Fine,’ Erlend finally says.She seems content – and a bit surprised. She looks happy, actually. (PS: It’s possible Erlend won’t be as happy later on today, as she was, of cour-se, completely right. There are no gold firework tops. But that’ll be her problem.)‘So hand it over,’ I say.I want the blue top now. But all of a sudden, it seems like Erlend doesn’t want to give it away after all. She looks up the hill at Helle, who is stan-ding there trying to keep a straight face.

«Greit,» sier Erlend til slutt. Hun virker fornøyd og litt overrasket. Hun ser glad ut,

«Gi meg toppen, da,» sier jeg. Jeg vil ha den blå toppen nå. Men plutselig virker det som

om Erlend ikke vil gi den fra seg likevel. Hun ser opp bakken mot Helle, som står der og prøver å se alvorlig ut.

«HER!» roper Erlend plutselig og kaster toppen på meg. Den treffer meg rett på skuldra og faller i snøen. (Ikke at

det gjorde vondt, eller noe, men FREKKE LUS! Det gjorde hun med vilje.)

«Takk, dust,» sier jeg og plukker opp toppen.

Så holder jeg den opp mot himmelen og beundrer min fiiiiine, blå fyrverkeritopp, før jeg legger den i jakkelomma sammen med resten. Erlend sparker en isklump så den fyker nedover veien, før hun leter videre etter topper.

«Drittsekk,» sier hun lavt og snur seg bort fra meg. «Hva sa du, VRÆLEN?!» sier jeg og skal akkurat til å

kaste meg etter henne, men så blir vi avbrutt:«Hei, dere, kom hit og se!»Det er Helle som roper. Så jeg og Erlend løper om kapp

bort til henne for å se hva det er.

‘HERE!’ Erlend suddenly shouts, and she throws the top at me.It hits me right in the shoulder and falls to the ground. (Not that it hurt or anything, but THE NERVE! What a rude little FLEE! She definitely did that on purpose.)‘Thanks, Stupid,’ I say, and pick the top up from the snow. And then I hold it up towards the sky, and I admire my beauuuutiful, blue firework top, before I put it in my jacket pocket with the rest of them.Erlend kicks at the snowy ground with her boot, sending a lump of ice flying down the street, before she carries on searching for tops.‘Shitbag,’ she says, under her breath, and turns away from me.‘What did you say, CRY-BABY?!’ I say, and I’m just about to launch myself at her – but then we’re interrupted:‘Hey, you guys! Come and have a look!’It’s Helle shouting. So me and Erlend race up the hill, to see what it is. Hel-le has found loads of firework tops! And it was just in time, too, because it suddenly starts snowing loads – big, wet snowflakes, like slush. So we go home to our house, all three of us. Now we’ll have to wait until this new snow melts again, before we can carry on searching for more tops. But all added together, we found enough to put one on each of the fairy lights on both mine, Helle’s and Erlend’s mini Christmas tree. And we still have some spare.My tree turns out bright blue, Helle’s completely red – and Erlend gets all the green tops. (We told her it was such a SHAME we didn’t find any gold tops, and that she of course will get every single one we find when the snow melts. And then she was happy with the green ones.)To be honest, Erlend’s tree kind of turned out a bit nicer than mine. I ask her if she wants to swap colours, but she doesn’t want to. So I tell her she’ll regret not wanting to swap, and that blue lights are a thousand times more beautiful than green ones, anyway. I tell her this is her very last chance, and that I NEVER EVER want to swap with her later on. It’s now, or never. She says that’s completely fine, and that she doesn’t want to swap anyway, no matter what I say. Crap. Stupid Cry-Baby. I tell her that next year I’m having the green ones.

The casket

Borgund stave church

Robert peered at the tar-black wooden church. With all its roofs and angles,

Borglund stave church was overwhelming. Storey on storey. Roof on roof. To-

wer and spire. Dark, powerful and mysterious, the church stood out against

the dazzling summer sun. Dragon’s heads snarled at the sky. Christian crosses

and Norse fabulous creatures side by side. Ornaments and carvings. But no

windows, no stained glass. Just this dark, black, enclosed brooding structure.

The summer day was warm and full of humming insects and pollen. The sun

baked down. A cloud of fine sand from the excavation area powdered the trees

and the meadow. The stave church cast a sharp shadow over the excavation

area where all the archaeologists were down on their knees searching for the

past.

One of them was Robert. A completely ordinary boy. Ordinary height, ordina-

ry appearance. He had turned fourteen a few months earlier. He liked music.

Exciting films. Computer games. And he owned a hamster by the name of Bur-

re. But right now he was here, at Borgund stave church, along with his mother.

She was an archaeologist. Robert had come along with her while she worked

during the summer holidays for as long as he could remember. It suited him

down to the ground. He loved archaeology. Or treasure hunting, as he called it.

We’re not looking for treasure, his mother used to object. Robert didn’t care.

As far as he was concerned, it was a treasure hunt.

All that morning he and his mother had been working down in a Viking grave

that was more than a thousand years old. Millimetre by millimetre, centimetre

by centimetre, they had dug and brushed their way back in time.

Suddenly Robert’s mother broke the silence:

‘Hi there!’

A bit too loud. A bit too high-pitched. She slowly got up. The other archaeologists

cane running and flocked round her.‘What is it, mum?’ Robert asked.His mother raised something into the air.

brooches, combs and arrowheads they had uncovered so far. Heading the proces-

sion were Robert and his mother.The head of the excavation, Chief Curator Ingeborg Mykle from the University

Museum of Antiquities came out onto the wooden platform to hear what they

had found.Robert’s mother was so elated that her hands trembled when she placed the copper

casket on the work-table inside the barracks.

On the outside of the casket, three signs had been engraved:

‘Incredible!’ the archaeologists all started murmuring. Some chuckled. Some

shook their heads in disbelief.‘What’s so incredible?’ Robert asked.‘The first symbol is an ankh,’ his mother explained.

‘A whatdyoucallit?’‘Ankh is the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph or sign for eternal life for reincarnation.

The second is the Norse rune ty, which represents the Viking’s god of war, Tyr. The

third is the Christian cross, the symbol of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.’

‘And?’ Robert said.‘Three symbols as ancient and different as these don’t belong together.’

‘And?’ Robert repeated.‘Anything that doesn’t belong somewhere is exciting for us archaeologists.’

‘’Isn’t what’s probably most exciting finding out what’s inside the casket?’ Robert

answered.His mother agreed with him about that.

So carefully that it took half an eternity, Robert’s mother picked the clay away from

the lid and eased open the casket.Several of them gasped.
