C hrist is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! I never tire of hearing those words. I wonder if we would be better representatives of the resurrection if we chose to begin every time of

worship, every funeral, every wedding, every midweek Lenten service, every Advent service, every Sunday morning worship service with those words. Do you think the words proclaiming the good news of the resurrection would lose some of their power or would we find ourselves more emboldened to tell the story with these words of resurrection reality emblazoned on our hearts and written into our bones? The first Sunday after Easter, the Sunday we always hear about the disciple Thomas, our Pastoral Intern Tony preached a sermon where he asked this question, “What does it mean to be resurrection people?” He went on to tell us the following:

Resurrection people do not feel the need to hide. Resurrection people do not dismiss their doubts, but believe in spite of their doubts. Resurrection people don’t need to have it all figured out before coming to church. Resurrection people don’t need to have it all figured out before helping a neighbor. Resurrection people don’t need to have it all figured out before feeding someone who is hungry

or caring for someone in need. When I reread those words, I realized that every moment we walk in the footsteps of Jesus reminds us that we are resurrection people whether we proclaim, “Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!” with our lips or simply show our identity by following in the footsteps of the One we choose to follow. And yet I know there are times when it is easier to not follow our Savior out of the empty tomb. There are days it is easier to stay behind. Perhaps we do not believe we have the strength or the courage or the maturity of faith to trust God enough to leave the pain, the grief, the self-pity, the anger behind. In such moments, I return to the words Tony shared with us on April 8th. Tony writes: “When I, like Thomas, am tempted to doubt the Easter message, I am reminded of the faces and the faithfulness of the people in this church. When musicians rehearse long hours; when meals are provided to those grieving the loss of a loved one; when refugees are welcomed; when a family cleans up the yard of a neighbor; when an invitation is spoken to a friend; when followers of Jesus pray and take a stand for the poor and the marginalized in our community; when a volunteer stays up late to prepare a BLAST lesson; when young people hear a word of blessing and affirmation spoken to them by adults; when people laugh and cry together over the joys and disappointments of their lives; when death is faced honestly and hopefully; when grace and mercy, not judgment and cruelty, direct our relationships, and when the church opens its heart and its doors to whoever comes longing for the love of God, excluding no one – I see signs of the resurrection. I see evidence that Easter has happened. I am convinced that Jesus is alive.” Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Thanks be to God! See you in church!

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

I t seemed like spring would never get here. Didn’t it? Just when it looked like winter was over, and warmer weather was here to stay, temperatures would plummet and snow flurries would fly. We were on a meteorological roller coaster for quite a while. I saw a great quote on Facebook that

summed it up nicely: “It’s like winter was really mad and kept storming out of the room and then coming back yelling, ‘And another thing!’” But even when it felt like winter would never release its frosty grip, we were confident that spring would find us…. eventually. Despite nor’easters and April blizzards, we all knew that soon we would be back to flip-flops and cook outs. Recently it occurred to me that sometimes we have more faith in nature than we do in God. Or perhaps it is a different faith, a stronger trust. Even when I was complaining about the cold weather, I was 100% confident that I would be back in sandals and sundresses in no time. (And then I would be complaining about the heat). But how many times do I pray, hoping, begging God with my fingers crossed – just pleading that God will hear me and answer my prayers? Sometimes in our lives, seasons seem to hang on and it is hard to envision a new atmosphere. I often remind myself that life’s journey is complicated and no one is exempt from pain, heartbreak, or grief. Conversely, we all experience joy, kindness, and peace. Laughter and tears will always be part of the human condition. But when midnight settles in on us, the sun is shining on others. Yes, storms are to be expected. But even snow from the fiercest blizzard must eventually yield to the faithfulness of flowers. But rest assured. Our God is still the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Sorrow cannot eclipse God’s promises. Neither can our greatest joys limit the scope of God’s activity. God’s promises are sure. God’s promises are real. God’s promises are true. I am reminded of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). God is always with us. Trusting in God's faithful presence we have hope. If we look closely, even in our most difficult times, we can see God's hand - the hidden hand of God. The more we look for God, the more we will find God. The more we listen for God’s voice, the more we will hear the call. The more we trust God’s motives the more peace we will experience even in difficult times. As long as we are on this side of eternity, we walk the tension of already and not yet. We are saved from this world but we still live in it. We are still subject to the highs and lows of the human condition. Yet we are never without hope. Our God is good, even when life isn’t.

The LORD has done great things for us, and we rejoiced…May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy. Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves. Psalm 126:3-6

A Taste of the Daniel Plan

L ast month we discussed how your “gut” is considered the second brain. As a reminder, the gut refers to your whole digestive tract which includes your esophagus, pancreas, gall bladder, small and

large intestines, liver and of course, your stomach. The gut, your second brain, is now recognized by many health practitioners to be the root cause of disease and is where healing starts. The Daniel Plan recently featured a Facebook post listing seven habits that might be affecting the health of your gut. We’d like to share some highlights of that post.

1. Maintaining a Poor Diet: Suggestions to improving your diet include removing processed foods, eating an alkalized diet full of greens and limiting sugar which fuels the bad gut bacteria. Increase your fiber intake from whole food sources and remove foods that aggravate the gut such as dairy, gluten and MSG.

2. Taking Antibiotics and Medications: Many prescr iption and over the counter medications are harmful to the gut. Antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria, as do most pharmaceutical medications. If you take daily medication or antibiotics, you will need to replenish your good bacteria through fermented foods and probiotic supplements.

3. Using The Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP) A daily dose is needed to have the effect, however, over time it wreaks havoc on your gut. The OCP depletes your B12, folate and zinc levels and kills off beneficial bacteria. Now think of 10 years of taking the pill and how good your gut might be thereafter! A break from the pill or focusing on a gut-healthy diet will help support long-term use if you must remain on the pill.

4. Using Alcohol: Alcohol kills off the good bacter ia in your gut, changes the ecosystem of your digestion and increases acidity. Alcohol further increases intestinal permeability meaning foreign agents and partially digested food enter through the gut and create an immune response that leads to inflammation. Intestinal permeability also means less nutrient absorption thus causing a lack of vital nourishment to the cells in your body.

5. Obsession with Cleanliness: Simply…a little dirt never hurt anyone. Antibacterial products limit your exposure to bugs that create your immunity.

6. Maintaining A Diet Low in Fermented Foods: At bir th, babies receive good bacter ia as they pass through the birth canal and then again from breast milk. As we mature, people need to get good bacteria from fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, or miso.

7. Stress: Long term stress leads to a lack of blood supply to your digestive tract and also a lack of gastric secretions leading to poor gut health.

Small changes you make eventually add up to noticeable improvements in your overall health and your life in general. The Daniel Plan is designed to help you make those small, steady sustainable improvements so you can be the person God intended you to be. If you are interested in finding out more about the Daniel Plan or have questions, please contact us at [email protected].

Flooding in Tanzania Prayers for our brothers and sisters in Tanzania.

Fourteen people have died as a result of days of tor-rential rains and flooding in Dar es Salaam, Tanza-nia's economic capital.

Additionally, floodwaters have inundated fields and damaged crops.

T he last week of July and the first week of August will be a his-toric time for Ascension.

Seven Ascension members along with seven members of St. Luke’s will be traveling to Tanzania. This is Ascension’s first

mission trip to visit Tanzania. During this trip, a partnership covenant with Samaria will be signed. The trip will focus on building relation-ships. Watch for many more details of the trip in upcoming newsletters, displays and announcements. The travelers represent all of us at Ascen-sion as our delegates to our new congregational partners. This trip is ex-pensive due to the cost of travel and in-country expenses. In order to help support the delegates, Mission Outreach is sponsoring a fundraiser on May 19.

We will host a catered Italian dinner with homemade desserts, entertain-ment and a silent auction. Even if you never plan to travel on a mission trip, you can do your part by helping with the success of this trip by participating in the dinner event. We need Ascension members and friends to purchase tickets, donate silent auction items and to buy the auction items. Tickets will be on sale the end of April and the first two weeks of May. Watch bulletin and e-alerts for details.

S erving meals at the Cross Meal program is a great example of accompaniment.

As our congregational partner in the city of Milwaukee, Cross Church understands the needs of the neighborhood surrounding their church. They see

a need to heal people who are struggling. They have asked us and other partners to join with them in this ministry. Through the service of Bread of Healing Empowerment Ministry (BOHEM), bodies are fed through the meal program and the food pantry, souls are fed through the Word and prayers, and spirits are renewed and fed through counseling, job skills coaching and self-care help. Cross members determine the direction of this ministry and the partner congregations work along side them through the neighborhood ministry. Cross is surrounded by a lot poverty, addiction, and broken spirits. Working together, we can bring the people of the neighborhood healing, hope and a fresh start.

Ascension will be serving next on Wednesday, May 2. We will be serving our Spaghetti Meal. If you would like to be part of the group going to Cross, please be at Ascension by 9:30 a.m. and we will carpool. If you would like to provide a dessert, have it at church by 9:30 a.m. on that day.

Cross Food Pantry: Cross is changing how they do their food pantry beginning on May 9 at 1 p.m. This will be a new concept for the food pantry. People will be able to shop the tables to pick the foods they can use. This will empower the people by having them choose what they want and will avoid waste. Cross is asking for assistance from partner churches to walk with the people as they choose their foods. If you are interested, call Arlene Davis at 262-542-91119. We would be spending approximately 2 hours on that Wednesday or any Wednesday you are available. For more information on any of the ministries at Cross, contact Arlene, [email protected].

In Our Backyard: Habitat of Humanity Habitat Waukesha builds decent, affordable homes for families who are

unable to purchase a home through traditional methods. Habitat does

not give houses away; but believes in giving a hand up, not a hand out.

By providing a home with an affordable zero-interest mortgage, home-

owners obtain self-sufficiency and break the cycle of poverty. Partner

families contribute 250 "sweat equity" hours per adult to take the place

of a down payment. Volunteers contribute time and talent to reduce la-

bor costs. Donations of money and construction materials further re-

duce costs.

Founded in 1989, Habitat for Humanity of Waukesha County built 23

homes in its first 24 years. In Fiscal Year 2015, Habitat completed 3

homes and opened a ReStore. In Fiscal Year 2017, Habitat completed 6 homes. Our Mission Seeking to

put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and

hope. Our Vision A world where everyone has a decent place to live.

If you are interested in helping build, remodel or do other activities around the houses, please contact

Shirley Wehmeier, [email protected], as we try to put together a team to volunteer this spring.

Treasurer’s Report

C ontributions were up sharply in March. The total was almost $71,000 and fell short of the budget target by only $1800, or 2.5%, which is good news compared to last month.

The Raise the Roof campaign has progressed well. Exact figures aren’t determined yet but enough has been raised to start work on the roof repairs this spring.

Along with increased contributions, came in-creased expenses that were one-time events. We incurred significant costs for furnace re-pairs to the church as well as maintenance and renovations on the Moreland property prior to the sale, which is now complete.

The chart shows an overview of the Income and Expense totals for the month. Thanks for your support.

Raise the Roof & Council News

T hank You! With your prayerful consideration and generosity, Ascension raised over $210,000 toward our $300,000 goal to address the failing roof. We have also started down the path of increasing the annual general fund contributions. So far, we

have commitments totaling $24,000 toward the goal of $120,000 to expand our ministries and maintain our facilities long term. Now it is time to Raise the Roof! We have assembled a facilities team of Ascension members who will volunteer their time and talents to oversee the project. The next step will be the selection of a contractor through a competitive

bidding process. The facilities team will also work with Council over the coming months to establish a long-term preventative maintenance plan. Look for updates on the project and facilities plan over the coming months. We are also making great progress with renting and updating three Ascension properties on Dopp Street and selling the property on Moreland. We have selected a new management partner and remediated lead paint and other issues with the three rental properties. All three houses on Dopp Street have tenants. We have an accepted offer to sell the house on Moreland Blvd. In other news, I attended the Caring Relationships Wing Leader meeting this week and learned more about the many wonderful ministries at Ascension. I was reminded of how richly blessed we are as a congregation to have the Wing teams focused on Worship, Growth, Relationships and Mission. Your council is working this year to strengthen the legs of the butterfly: Communication, Financial, Leadership and Facilities to support the Wings and help us all achieve our mission for Christ.
