Asaithambi

ADMINISTRATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Director, School of Computing, University of North Florida, 2011-2015 o Coordinated the simultaneous ABET Review process during the 2013-2014 accreditation

cycle for the four undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Information Systems,

Information Science, and Information Technology. All four programs received

accreditation until the next general review in 2020. These programs enroll roughly 600

students in all, with an average growth rate of around 12% during 2013-14 and 2014-15

academic years.

o Implemented the successful redesign of the beginning programming course for Computer

Science majors (C programming) to incorporate supplemental instruction, distance

delivery modules, and closed-laboratory components. The failure rate (percent of students

receiving grades of D, F, or W) in this course reduced from 57% to 24% over a period of

three years (2012-15).

o Migrated the service course on Microsoft Applications from an adjunct-taught model to

supervised instruction by graduate assistants; secured college-level funding to support

graduate students engaged in these classes (2014-15).

o Hosted, participated, or organized several community-based student engagement

programs, including a Regional User Group Expo, Chief Technology Officers Forum,

Course/Research Projects Showcase Symposia, Summer Camps for Middle School

Children, Expanding Your Horizons North Florida (for middle school girls), BotBall

Tournaments, etc. (2011-15).

o Established a scholarship in honor of Director Emerita Judith L. Solano (2013). This

involved contacting alumni, developing pledge correspondence, working the UNF offices

Development and Alumni Relations. With great additional support from the faculty and

staff at the School of Computing, initial contributions at the level of $10,000 have been

received.

o Hired two tenure-track faculty members, four visiting faculty members, one full-time

instructor, two academic advisors, one administrative secretary, and one office manager

(2011-15).

o Proposed, developed and delivered the multi-institutional, collaborative, interdisciplinary

Computational Science and Statistics Ph. D. program (with South Dakota State

University, 2005-11).

o Secured funding from NSF ($598,000) for the Broadening Participation in Computing

project entitled “Getting American Indians to Information Technology” and implemented

it on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Mission, South Dakota (2008-11).

o Secured institutional funding at the level of $184,000 to renovate Computer science

graduate student space (2005).

o Secured supplemental funding, in collaboration with the USD Sanford School of

Medicine Bioinformatics Group at the level $340,000 to support high-performance

computing across the NIH-funded BRIN institutions (2006).

o Established the Computer Science Department Advisory Board consisting of

representatives from academia, businesses, and the healthcare industry in the South

Dakota region.

o Established the Smart Software Solutions endowment and the need-based Smart

Scholarship program in support of high-school programming contest participants.

o Hired two tenure-track faculty members to strengthen research areas of bioinformatics

and high-performance computing (2005-06).

o Obtained multiple alumni sponsorships for the High-School Programming Contest

(2004).
