The monthly newsletter of the Area Substance Abuse Council

ASAC Invests in Client and Staff HealthThe Area Substance Abuse Council is one of three substance abuse treatment agenciesin the state that are piloting Tobacco Free campuses. ASAC will go totally tobacco-freestarting July 1st. In preparation for this date, we have started to offer tobacco cessationclasses to our clients and staff. In addition to the free sessions, ASAC is also coveringthe cost of Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRTs); patches, gum, and lozenges.

Initially we will be spending $12,000 to purchase the NRTsto get the tobacco cessation started and we will have anon-going expense of $3,000 or more per month to providetobacco cessation classes and supplies. John Garringer,ASACs Executive Director, stated although this is a sizable amount, it is not that highwhen compared to the agencys total $10 million dollar budget and the impact it willhave on the health of our clients and staff. It is an important investment and one that wethink is imperative in the recovery of our clients and the wellness of our staff.

To provide all employees with an understanding of the tobacco cessation programmingbeing offered and obtain consistency in the implementation of our tobacco-free policy,

every ASAC staff member is being encouraged to participate in Fresh Starts 3060minute on-line tobacco cessation training. To view the free Fresh Start tutorial please goto http://www.acsworkplacesolutions.com/freshstart.asp.
