FAQ

SHow do I sign up for a class? Sign up by calling or registering online. You will find a calendar of classes at the back of the catalog. Call 208-373-1809 or online at www.newknowledgeadventures.org. Registration begins August 22.

What are the class fees for? Class fees cover all upfront supplemental expenses (such as materials, rentals, admission, etc.) associated with a class. Most fees are non-refundable. You will not be charged a class fee if you are on a waitlist. If a spot opens on the waitlist, you’ll be able to pay the class fee when you register.

How many classes are available? For $35, you’ll get access to unlimited classes — and you can choose from more than 80 class selections! Most students sign up for an average of 5-10 classes. Some classes fill up quickly, so don’t put off signing up.

The class I want to take is full. Is there a waitlist? If the class you sign up for is full, we’ll add you to a waitlist. We will do our best to accommodate unexpectedly large enrollments by expanding class size, scheduling additional classes, and replacing cancellations with waitlisted members. If you’re interested in a class, please check back for new class selections — if possible, we will add additional sections to high-demand classes.

Is it possible that my class might change times, dates, or locations? Yes. We might need to reschedule or move classes for a variety of reasons, such as instructor illness or last-minute venue complications. If that happens, we’ll be sure to call you beforehand to alert you. You can always check online for verification.

A Note About YMCA ClassesPlease sign up for YMCA classes only if you plan to attend. The Y is a valued partner and offers NKA classes as a service to the community, but that effort is wasted when NKA members don’t show up as expected. Please help NKA be a good steward of our community resources.

Attending an NKA class at the Y offers so much more. Participate in the class and you can stay in the facility for the rest of the day — a savings of $13.25! The Y is a veritable playground with so many different ways to care for your body, mind, and spirit. Bring a lock, a towel, a change of clothes, and feel free to use the locker room when you’re finished. The Downtown, West, and Caldwell YMCAs have spas, steam rooms, and saunas for your relaxation.

FAQ

sWhat if I can’t make a class? If you’re unsure about whether you’ll be able to attend a class, don’t sign up — you could be taking the spot of someone who really wants to attend. Wait until your schedule is clear. If you need to drop out for any reason, let us know as soon as possible so another person from the wait list can take your place. Call 208-373-1809. This number is only staffed M - F 8:00 - 5:00.

Will parking be available?Free parking will be available for most classes, but please check with special venues and plan accordingly. Parking is free at all YMCA locations and ISU-Meridian on Saturday only. At AARP Idaho, parking is free up to two hours in the visitor lot. If the visitor lot is full, ample paid street/lot parking is available in the vicinity. Come prepared to pay for street parking.

How can I tell if I’m supposed to attend all the classes listed or just one? Sequential classes — meaning classes that you have to take in order — are listed like this: September 16, 18, 20

Sequential classes are also marked by this icon:

Classes that are not sequential — meaning you can choose which date you’d like to attend — are listed like this: September 16September 18September 20

unique conditioning exercises. Build a stronger core by moving from the inside out. Develop strength and flexibility with fluidity and grace. Improve posture and body awareness while moving the body as an integrated whole.

Zumba Gold Zumba fuses toe-tapping Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow aerobic moves to create a fun and energizing fitness program. It’s like a dance class that works wonders for shaping up your body and your mood. Zumba Gold is designed for true beginner and active older adults, making this class easy to follow and easy to fall in love with, especially when you get a feel for the Latin groove and the hang of the moves. Drawing on styles like mambo, cha cha cha, swing, salsa, and more, it’s more like a dance party than a workout.

AARPAARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, with a membership of nearly 38 million that helps people turn their goals and dreams into ‘Real Possibilities’ by changing the way America defines aging. With staffed offices in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, AARP works to strengthen communities and promote the issues that matter most to families such as healthcare security, financial security and personal fulfillment. AARP also advocates for individuals in the marketplace by selecting products and services of high quality and value to carry the AARP name. As a trusted source for news and information, AARP produces the world’s largest circulation magazine, AARP The Magazine and AARP Bulletin.

Treasure Valley YMCAThe Treasure Valley Family YMCA strengthens the foundation of community by developing successful youth, engaging people in healthy living, and instilling a commitment to social responsibility. Every day, the YMCA works with communities to make sure everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. Through the YMCA’s four Treasure Valley facilities and hundreds of programs, youth, adults, and families have access to endless opportunities to achieve healthy living. There are many health and well-being programs designed specifically for active older adult populations, and YMCA staff are qualified and devoted to providing the support and safety one may need on his or her journey to a healthier, happier life.

Join the New Knowledge Adventures curriculum committee. Have fun behind the scenes. By joining our curriculum committee, you’ll get in on creating and defining each semester’s catalog of the best academic, social, non-credit classes out there. You’ll also serve as an inside source for both class facilitators and instructors. Would you like to shape the course(s) of the future at New Knowledge Adventures? We’d love for you to join us!

A meeting of mindsHere’s what curriculum committee members do.» Actively participate in committee work by

attending scheduled meetings, completing tasks regarding proposed classes, and participating in committee decision making.

» Attend a majority of scheduled meetings and be open to other communication by email and telephone.

» Participate in the development of new classes, review surveys and suggestions, and appraise the success of past classes.

» Identify and contact potential volunteer instructors for the classes to gauge interest levels, make arrangements and complete paperwork.

» Review proposed classes and make determinations for each semester’s offerings.

» Serve as a volunteer class facilitator, or help train, orient, and support others.

» Have fun!

PLAY A PART: The success of this program depends on your ideas. NKA is directed by a team of volunteers. For more information on teaching a class or volunteering, contact Cathy at [email protected].
