Welcome to the latest edition of our Arts EducationProgram Guide. Within these pages you will findexceptional programs, guaranteed to engage thehearts, minds and imaginations of the children youserve. We have endeavored to assemble the verybest cultural arts programs available for schools inour area and to connect you with them at the low-est prices possible.

As you may know, we do not charge either a feeor commission on any of the assemblyor workshop programs offeredthrough this Program Guide. Infact, the Arts Council is solelysupported by your member-ship in addition to the generoussupport of funders and donors.

As we strive to keep pace with tough econom-ic challenges, and to continue to provide the qualityprogramming that you associate with the Arts Council,your support is needed more than ever. Founded in 1973, the Arts Council of the Morris Areais a private,not-for-profit organization that is commit-ted to enhancing the arts and their impact on thequality of life in the Morris area. The Arts Council’svaried programs and services are designed to edu-cate and enrich the learning experiences of schoolchildren, build vibrant communities through arts pro-gramming and support of locally-based arts organi-zations, celebrate the creativity of artists who live in

our midst, serve as a central arts resource, andprovide information about the arts to

the general public.

the learning experiences ofschool children through arts

education programs designed forcurricular integration and sustained impact.

Beyond the classroom, the Arts Council providescreative opportunities for Morris County’s mostvulnerable children and their families through part-nerships with social service agencies and commu-nity organizations. We hope that you find ourresources and services valuable and will continueto support the arts education program of the ArtsCouncil of the Morris Area.

As we strive to “place the arts at the centerof learning” within area schools and commu-nities, the Arts Council of the Morris Area:

• selects and promotes high quality arts edu-cation performances and workshops.

• provides consultation at any time to helpyou select programs suitable for yourschool or community.

• publishes an annual Arts EducationProgram Guide and presents an annual ArtsEducation Showcase to preview offerings.

• offers a series of workshops and CulturalArts Roundtables, allowing cultural arts rep-resentatives the opportunity to network,review and discuss noteworthy programs,fundraising for the arts and arts advocacy.

• offers Artist Residency programs whichinclude planning meetings with administra-tors, teachers and teaching artists as well assupport and assessment of each residency.

• provides professional development offer-ings for teachers and teaching artists.

Enroll your school in our ArtsEducation Program by filling out the form on theinside of the back cover and submitting it to usalong with your check for $50. As a member, youwill receive invitations to our Cultural ArtsRoundtable Series as well as our annual two-dayArts Education Showcase.

Werecommend that you consult with the principaland the teachers with classes attending the pro-gram for suggestions. The Arts Council of theMorris Area’s education staff is also available forconsultation to make suggestions based on yourschool’s interests.

THE NEW JERSEY STATE OPERA – HANSEL AND GRETEL NEW This beloved fairy tale opera willhave students amazed by the story tellingpower of opera. The program includes pro-fessional, costumed soloists and pianoaccompaniment. Also included are a studyguide for the teacher and a blackline masterlesson plan that teachers can copy and dis-tribute to their students. This programexposes students to the concept of usingmusic and singing to communicate ideas,thoughts and feelings, and includes manycross-curricular connections. NEW ORLEANS DIXIELAND BAND Six dynamicmusicians trace the origins of tap-your-feet,clap-your-hands and grin-on-your-faceDixieland music. THE NEW PHILHARMONIC OF NEW JERSEY–SOUNDS LIKE FUN! NEW This program bringsorchestral and ensemble concerts to NewJersey schoolchildren. WE ARE ALL ARTISTS NEW A workshopwith muralist and Art Educator CarenFrost Olmsted unleashes the artist ineach student that participates in thecreation of a stunning, theme drivenmural. Every student will get to partici-pate in the painting (no matter whattheir skill level) with the end result ofknowing that they have left a permanentartistic legacy behind. Olmsted willdesign a mural tailored to the age leveland based upon themes provided by theschool, such as local history, land-scapes, and community ideals. Theduration of the project will be deter-mined by the size and scale of the wallsto be painted and the number of stu-dents to be included. Once the mural iscomplete, Olmsted will do any neces-sary touch-ups, as well as seal the wallfor easy maintenance. This residency isalso an excellent opportunity for parentvolunteers to participate in a specialschool event. WHAT AM I? THE STORY OF AN ABSTRACTPAINTING In this program artist SerenaBocchino uses her popular children’sbook to introduce elementary schoolstudents to abstract art. Consisting of alarge presentation followed by hands-on workshops, students use watercolorpaint and begin to develop their ownvisual vocabulary with a new under-standing of abstraction. RESIDENCY PROGRAMSCIRCUS AROUND THE WORLD WITH CIRCUS MIN-IMUS Residency led by a former Big AppleCircus instructor has students study jug-gling, clowning, tumbling, partner acro-batics, human pyramid building, tight-wire, and much more. Circus Around theWorld is an integrated curriculum thatallows students to research culture, histo-ry, social studies, language arts and geog-raphy of a chosen country, while acquiringcircus skills. A collaborative approachamong the artist, students, teachers andadministrators builds to a joyous circusperformance which is presented to thewhole community. Kevin O’Keefe andStaff; Grades K-8

CIRCUS YOGA NEW blends the practice ofyoga with the skills of circus. Through thistwo-week interdisciplinary residency K-8students will explore kinesiology, creativi-ty and connection. Yoga is an ancient sci-ence that teaches us how to be aware ofour bodies in action. Circus is a culture ofinclusion and celebration that teaches ushow remarkable we can be in our bodies.We will begin by exploring our anatomyand physiology as it relates to a particularskill. We will learn how the whole bodyand the focus of the mind contribute toour movement, choices, and abilities inany activity. CircusYoga offers a non-com-

petitive learning environment. Studentsare met where they are and are encour-aged to lead with their curiosity. Throughthis exploration each class with co-createa performance. The culminating experi-ence will be an hour-long CircusYogaCelebration open to the whole schoolcommunity. CircusYoga creates a placewhere ordinary kids doing extraordinarythings and shine! FROM PAGE TO STAGE helps students developa strong, authentic voice in their writing;an ability to see another person’s point ofview; an understanding of the importantrole played by conflict and conflict resolu-tion in real life and on the stage; and anappreciation for the historical roots ofwestern theater. Students play physicaland verbal theater games to improve lis-tening, concentration and teamwork. Theyalso do improvisations that inspire thewriting of monologues and scenes as wellas work as a group to stage selectedworks, adding music, dance, costumes orprops that enhance the production. A per-formance for an invited audience com-pletes the process of transforming the lit-eral into the symbolic, the ordinary intothe extraordinary.The residency meets allof the New Jersey Core CurriculumStandards in Language Arts and Literacyand in Visual and Performing Arts. THE ARTS PLUS RESIDENCY is an interdiscipli-nary, in-depth project that demonstrateshow the arts can inspire uniquely creativeand meaningful learning experiences for aschool community. Artists, principals andteachers collaborate to create an educationalexperience that transcends the typical class-room experience by exploring multiple-intel-ligence, hands-on ways of learning. Studentslearn to express themselves creatively whileteachers are exposed to innovative strategiesfor implementing the Core CurriculumContent Standards.

The Arts Plus Residency takes place over a twoto six week period. Participating artists-in-residence are carefully chosen for their artis-tic talent and innovative programs as well astheir ability to teach and relate to young peo-ple. The artists are committed to the interde-partmental approach, combining more thanone academic discipline into the activities ofthe residency, and work closely with schooladministrators and faculty to design the res-idency through a pre-planning meeting andteachers’ workshop. Core groups consistingof approximately 100 students form thenucleus of the residency.

Ten-day residencies range in price from$4200 to $6500.

Using folktales and percussioninstruments, students learn ways to retelltraditional stories and create original onesby relating them to fundamental musicalconcepts. Anexcellent opportunity for non-musicians tobring music into their classrooms and forteachers to learn new ways to engageengage kinesthetic, visual, and musicallearners in literacy activities. INSTRUMENTS:ANCIENT TO FUTURE Digital musicspecialist, ethnomusicologist and educatorAndy Wasserman introduces students to thesecrets of understanding how sounds arecreated to express the language of musicpast, present and future. Andy Wassermanhas the students travel through time, combin-ing a virtual cornucopia of computerizedmusic technology alongside ethnic instru-ments from around the world to illustratewhere music has been and where it is going.Connections between instruments past andpresent are explained and demonstratedusing synthesizer keyboards, digital sam-plers, electronic drums, and a laptop comput-er. Student volunteers get numerous opportu-nities during the residency to join a worldbeat

jam using both acoustic and electronic instru-ments, including participation in the creationof a musical soundtrack for an imaginarymovie. Andy Wasserman; Grades K-12

MULTI-CULTURAL FOLK DANCE During this danceresidency, students learn folk dances repre-senting different countries and cultures,while also learning about history, geographyand music. Each class learns a differentdance and then all classes learn one com-mon dance, all of which are performed at aculminating assembly program for theschool, parents and community. All classesperform in full costume, and each dancesegment is introduced with a description ofthe country of origin and the history of thedance. Dances can include: Chinese RibbonDance, African Lion Dance, Russian Trepak,Highland Fling, Classical Japanese FanDance, Japanese Taiko Drumming,Cicerennella, Italian Folk Dance, AustralianAboriginal Dance, French Minuet, MexicanClap Dance, Merengue, Colonial dances andothers! THE PLAY'S THE THING In this residency, direc-tor Margaret Noonan offers an exciting,hands-on approach to Shakespeare for ele-mentary grade students. By reading, dis-cussing and acting out a Shakespeareanplay, students come to understand the story,appreciate the language and experience thethrill of seeing the words come to life.

Students explore the entire play throughoutthe course of this residency and workingwith an age appropriate condensed text andminimal props and staging, the focus is onthe power of language alone to create dramaand to create magic. Students are given theopportunity to experiment with differentroles thus enabling them to experience theplay from different points of view. At theconclusion of the residency students willhelp choose the scenes to be presented as a"work in progress" to a larger audience andfield questions afterward about the process.Revolving Door Studios; Grades 4-8

PAGES TO PLAYERS JR This residency affordsstudents the opportunity to explore aShakespeare play in all its dimensions, fromreading and discussion to rehearsal and per-formance. Working with the education staffof The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey,the residency begins with an exploration ofensemble, introducing students to valuableskills for creative collaboration and problem-solving. Working with an abridgedShakespeare text, the students will exploreboth physical and verbal forms of expres-sion, building self-confidence and the fluent,effective use of language. As time permits,the residency will make interdisciplinaryconnections to art, music and other areasthat can enhance theatrical storytelling, butShakespeare’s language remains absolutelycentral. Each residency will culminate in a

performance by the student ensemble.Schools may also wish to add a perform-ance by The Shakespeare Theatre’s educa-tional touring company, Shakespeare LIVE!This residency is designed for a four to sixweek period, but shorter residencies may bepossible. THE POETIC LENS is a hybrid residency thatallows students to express themselves boththrough poetry and photography at once.Students examine different aspects of theirlives through visual cues and with verbalprecision. As they gaze outward throughthe camera's window, there is also an inter-nal audience being tended. Life is capturedon film and on the page. Combining thesetwo kinds of expression results in experi-ences that are both enlightening for theartist and very powerful for the audience.Different aspects of the art of photography(camera angle, subject matter, lighting) andpoetry (verbal precision, figurative lan-guage, revision) will be stressed. The resi-dency concludes with a celebration of stu-dent work, in which poems and photo-graphs are paired in a display or printedanthology. Jim DelGiudice and BJ Ward;Grades 3 -12

A SOUND VENTURE This residency offers amusical global studies adventure as stu-dents discover the limitless array of soundsavailable to the percussionist. African

instruments and their new world offspringare used to explore and experience musicprinciples, multi-cultural studies, instru-ment making or geography. The residencycan be designed to support a specific unit ofstudy or curriculum themes such asAfrican-American or colonial music,rhythms & songs, ecology, storytelling andwriting. An appropriate culminating activitysuch as informal sharing, cassette recordingor performance will conclude the residency.Ron McBee; Grades K-12

SPIRITREE residencies draw on the power ofartmaking to tap the many talents and intel-ligences of students. The thematicallydefined interdisciplinary projects integratethe arts with the curriculum as students cre-ate masks, giant puppets, and life-size fig-ures in paper mâché and engage in creativeresearch. Themes focus on subject areassuch as history, literature or science and arechosen by teachers and the artists. So thatstudents may share their creative learningexperiences with others, each residency cul-minates in an installation, pageant or parade.Two or three week sessions.
