    Arts Evidence Guide 2013-14

    Standards-based descriptions of community arts programming for selection byLAUSD schools

    Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards by Component Strand that theprogram supports andthe specific program activity that addresses theStandard:

    Artistic PerceptionGrade 4 1.6, grade 5 1.5, grade 6 1.5. Students are introduced to the dramaticeffects of theatrelighting, sound enhancement and other theatrical elements. They have theopportunity tohear each instrument played separately and as part of the ensemble, learn thenames oftap rudiments and vocabulary steps (trying some of them in their seats, like"cramproll"), identify steps that have been demonstrated individually when laterperformed ina repertoire work.

    Creative ExpressionGrade 4 2.3, grade 5 2.6, grade 6 1.5. RIT's one hour lectureDemonstration/Performance includesexplanations of dance terminology anddemonstrations of dance composition principles:Choreography (metaphor: writingsentences/stories), improvisation (spontaneouslycreating), "trading eights" (having a conversation between dancer and drummer

    (questionand answer)), and collaboration.

    Historical and Cultural ContextGrade 4 3.2, grade 5 3.1, grade 6 3.1. Students are introduced to a very briefhistory of tap dance,an American dance form that evolved from predominantly twocultural contributions,African dance/music and Irish dance as well as the contributions ofindividualinnovators such as Bill Robinson, John Bubbles and most recently GregoryHines. Streetdancing and early tap "challenge matches" are discussed, as well asthe importance of mentorsand teachers. Various culturally influenced pieces will beperformed.

    Aesthetic ValuingGrade 4 4.3, grade 5 4.1, grad 6 4.4. We will explain our artistic goals in dancemaking and showthat the content may vary from one dance to another, but there isalways a desiredeffect or expression. We describe and share technical and other challenges thatdancersand musicians experience in order to master their craft with fullexpression.Dance/music performance excerpts reinforce these ideas so thatstudents can make theconnection.

    Connections, Relationships, ApplicationGrade 4 5.1, grade 5 5.4, grade 6 5.1. Our program addresses the importance of"practice, disciplineand focus" as it applies to the arts and to other life goals. Wemake an effort to showhow valuable collaboration can be in making a dance or a piece of music and in

    otherlife experiences. We use an entertaining format to engage student interest butalsoinclude moments that require real listening skills and recognition of theconceptpresented.
