Introduction

How about those arthropods?

The phylum of the Arthropods are by far the most successful animals on the earth. Their sizes vary from the insects and crustaceans and the King Crab (12 ft. long arm length). They are defined by their segmented structure. Their bodies are very versatile and can be changed to make antennae, and other body parts. The number of arthropods amount up to 9 million different species! Ready to learn!

Origin of Species

Well, where did they originate? The Arthropods originated during the

Cambrian Period over two million years ago. They are often identified by their exoskeleton. The characteristics they exhibit are indicative of the life and times of which they originated. Their shell is:-defensive

-protecting them from parasites

-sensors in their eyes which could be used in closed and exposed areas.

We can see these same features in the arthropods today….

Habitats

Ok, so where can I find these Arthropods?

In the air, surface, in still water, fast moving water, in plants, on plants, soil, beneath stones, on the ground, on flowers, on other animals, temporary visitors, woodlands, open field, tools, in leaf litter, and sometimes they fly over to…..

YOU!

SUBPHYLUMS

Insects (Hexapoda)

Oh, I know what insects are. They’re…they’re..

- a species with six-paired legs. - They have two antenna. - They have great sight.

-They may have several wings. - They may be able to fly.

Insects (cont.)

Just a few include:

ants, beetles, butterflies, cockroaches, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and stink bugs; just to name a few. These are more common to us.

Arachnids (Chelicerata)

Ok, so we have insects, and the arachnids? What are those?

- They’re eight legged arthropods

-They have no wings or any antennae.

-Most arachnids live on land.

-A few species can be found in fresh and salt water habitats.

Arachnids (cont.)

Just a few include:

black widow spider, crab spiders, daddy longlegs, mites, scorpions, spiders, ticks, whip tailed scorpions, wind scorpions.

Arachnids are separated into three groups: Scorpions, ticks and mites, and spiders.

Crustaceans (Crustacea)

Wow! Ok, now that that is settled. Lastly, what is a crustacean?

-They are ten-legged or more species.

-Their natural habitat is water.

-A lot of them live in saltwater.

-Woodlice are crustaceans who live on land.

Crustacean (cont.)

Just a few of them include:

crabs, crayfish, fish, lice, shrimp, krill, lobsters, and barnacles.- There are over 40,000 different crustaceans.

Diseases Affecting Arthropods

There are few to no diseases that affect arthropods, but there are plenty of diseases that they bring to affect humans. A few of these are:

-Lyme Disease, West Nile Disease (which has been known to kill thousands), and Airborne Vector Diseases.

Conclusion

I learned about certain diseases that arthropods carry and how they can affect us in the long run. I also learned about how to be aware of the diseases that arthropods have and about prevention of you catching those diseases. I’ve benefitted also by having attained information about the different types of arthropods.
