Arthropods
OBJECTIVE:
You will be able to list the four groups of arthropods, list their characteristics and
give an example of each.
Arthropod characteristics:
1. Jointed appendages
2. Open circulatory system
3. Exoskeleton made of chitin4. Body segments5. Bilateral symmetry
1. Insects:
a. 3 body segments – head, thorax, abdomen
b. Large compound eyes
c. Adults have wings
d. One pair of antennae
e. Three pairs of legs
Respiratory system – have spiracles on abdomen to let oxygen in and carbon dioxide out
f. Live on land and some in fresh water
Examples: flies, beetles (the most numerous kind of creature on earth in terms of numbers of species), butterflies, crickets, grasshoppers, cockroaches, ants, bees, wasps, dragonflies, termites
2. Crustaceans – crabs, lobsters, barnacles
a. 2 body segments – head, cephalothoraxes( thorax and abdomen fused together)
b. Two pair of antennae
c. Have mandibles on head to eat
d. Usually have shells for protection
e. Five or more pairs of legs
f. Have gills – live in land, fresh water and salt water
g. Compound and simple eyes
3. Arachnids: spiders, mites, scorpions and ticks
a. All predators: have specialized parts:
pinchers, fangs, venum
b. No antennae
c. Two body parts: head and cephalorax

d. Mostly live on land, some in water
e. Four pairs of leg, some have five
4. Centipedes and millipedes:
a. Long body with many segments
Centipedes – 1 pair of legs per segment
Millipedes – 2 pair of legs per segment

c. Live in moist environments
d. consumers - eat other living things:
Centipedes – carnivores: have poison claws
Millipedes – herbivores, and scavengers will not bite you
