WE ARE ALL TEACHERS

It has been a wonderful experience to support Artesian Drive Public School for the past two months. Stu-

dents and parents have been so welcoming and we have worked well together as a team to provide the best

learning opportunities for our children. Thank you to over 60 percent of families who completed the sur-

vey Your Voice Counts. Access to the survey is available until May 5th if you still want to participate.

As I think about Artesian Drive Public, I realize that we want to see our school as an extension of your

families, and we love to have your homes as the extensions of what we are teaching at school.

We can all encourage our children to read. Reading can unlock the keys to a

whole world of information. Parents are teachers, both by example and by con-

versation. We can all maintain good routines and positive attitudes as we get

ready for each day. Good sleep habits, healthy eating and physical activities all

contribute to our well-being.

We can all monitor our usage of electronic devices. Agreeing to shut off our cell phones or spending time

together on the computer makes for better relationships and family time. Although our children may play

with electronic toys for hours, their need for limits and adult engagement remain as important as ever.

April is an exciting month at Artesian Drive. The focus on the Day of Pink (April 10) at the junior school

means that we talk about how students support each other and how they can speak out against bullying.

We will have Scott Graham, from Kids4Kids, present on April 12 in the morning. This high energy as-

sembly for grades 1-2 stresses anti-bullying strategies. For grades 3-5, the assembly includes leadership

concepts plus positive intervention approaches.

On Wednesday, April 19 we have a special invitation for you for Family Fitness Night, and the Book Fair

continues all week from April 17-21. Other events include Pitch-In Week,

Walk for Wildlife and Earth day on April 22. As we participate and engage

with our children at Artesian, we realize that this creates a community where we

are all teachers and learners together. Respectfully submitted by

Artesian Drive goes pink on April 10

Day of Pink, the international day to celebrate diversity and inclusion

to work towards ending homophobia, transphobia and all forms of

bullying and discrimination, falls on the second Wednesday of April

each year. As this conflicts with a holy day, in order to give all of our

students an opportunity to be part of this important inclusion activity,

the Peel District School Board schools will recognize Day of Pink

on April 10 this year.

“Equity and inclusion is something that all Peel schools teach

throughout the year and discuss with students daily—it is embedded in everything we do,” says

Tony Pontes, director of education. “Day of Pink is just one more way for us to ensure students

and staff learn, work and develop in environments that are safe, equitable, inclusive, respectful

and nurturing for all.”

Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied with ho-

mophobic language because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students

at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for equity and

inclusion.

On this day, students, staff and families from across Peel

may wear pink and participate in a number of activities to

celebrate diversity and inclusion. On April 12, Artesian

Drive is pleased to welcome Scott Graham from Kids 4

Kids. Scott will be speaking to our students about anti

bullying strategies and leadership initiatives. The presen-

tation for students in grades 1 and 2 will be at 9:00 a.m.

and 10:00 a.m. for those in grades 3-5.

On May 2-4, representatives from Bully Brave will be

visiting classrooms for a series of anti bullying work-

shops.

Peel schools will pay tribute to administrative professionals on Ad-

ministrative Professionals’ Day on April 25, 2017. The day will be

celebrated with special activities and events that provide teachers, stu-

dents and parents an opportunity to thank the administrative staff who

help support student success each and every day.

The Peel board appreciates the important job administrative staff do

each school day and April 25 provides an opportunity to give these

individuals the recognition they deserve.

Do you know an adult that is interested in improving their English language skills for work, study or daily life?

Through the Continuing & Adult Education department, the Peel District School Board offers a wide variety of English language classes that help parents experience success in Canadian English in both listening/speaking and reading/writing. Courses are designed for a range of basic, intermediate and advanced English (Levels 1 to 7) as well as the more experienced learner needing to prepare for an IELTS exam.

Classes are ongoing - Register anytime.

All learners that complete a session will earn a certificate of learning from the Peel District School Board.

Classes operate from six locations in Brampton and Mississauga with three specially designed adult centres at:

Help us to encourage and enhance parent involvement in Peel

Apply for a position on the board's Parent Involvement Committee

The Peel board’s Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) meets regularly throughout the school year to review the board’s plans for par-ent involvement as they relate to parent, family and community engagement, and to make suggestions to schools, councils and the board regarding additional parent outreach.

As mandated by the ministry, the purpose of Peel board's PIC is to:

support, encourage, and enhance meaningful parental involvement within schools and across the district, including, outreach to par-ents who find involvement more challenging

work collaboratively with the school board to support student success

seek out the advice and ideas of school councils, and other parents and partners as they plan and implement strategies to involve more parents at the regional level

develop strategies for enhancing parental engagement and outreach

April - Earth Month

Earth Month encompasses the international celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2017. This is the most celebrated environmental event worldwide. Initiated in 1970, this event has been considered the birth of the environmental movement.

Each year, more than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the profusion of events and projects. Here are some ways that you can celebrate earth week with your family:

create a backyard or schoolyard habitat

plant a garden or tree

start a recycling program at home

organize a carpooling campaign in your neighbourhood to reduce air pollution

pick up trash in your neighbourhood

read a book about an endangered species

make a visit to your local zoo, aquarium or museum

visit a local park, wildlife area or farm to provide a fun opportunity to learn about the environment and life

Health and Physical Education Curriculum supports the physical, emotional and social well-being of students

Working together to keep our students safe and healthy

The Peel District School Board implemented the Ministry of Education’s revised Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum in the 2015-16 school year. The curriculum is divided into four elements that work together to support the physical, emotional and social well-being of students:

active living

movement competence

living skills

healthy living

Peel staff will again teach the human development and sexual health component to students, beginning spring 2017. This provides time for teachers to develop strong relationships with their students prior to this phase.

Advance notice letters will be sent home with students two weeks prior to the human development/sexual health lessons. Families can submit religious accommodation requests at any time prior to the lesson by contacting the school directly.

Pitch-In Week

The 50th annual PITCH-IN Week will once again welcome over 500,000 volunteers from coast to coast, ready to PITCH-IN to

help keep our country clean.

“In 2017, the impact of litter, and improperly disposed waste continues to be detrimental to

Canadian wildlife, our ecosystems, oceans and waterways,” says Misha Cook, PITCH-IN

CANADA’s Executive Director. “Simple day-to-day actions can have the greatest impact on

future years and generations.”

The PITCH-IN Week campaign involves our school commu-

nity cleaning up the Artesian Drive Community during the

week of April 17-23rd to coincide with Earth Day.

Walk for Wildlife

Walk for Wildlife is a national campaign that encourages all Canadians to experience the wild-

life and natural spaces in their region.

The year 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation, and during this iconic celebrato-

ry year we want to recognize Canada’s great iconic species! Walk for Wildlife 2017 is all

about the species we carry with us every day - the Common Loon, Polar Bear, Caribou and

Beaver – iconic Canadian species that grace our currency and remind us even the smallest steps and contributions can make a

difference for Canadian wildlife.

On April 12th, Our school will be participating in the Walk for Wildlife campaign. We ask that students wear comfortable

shoes and bring in a toonie to support wildlife. Donations received throughout activities in this campaign will be directed to-

wards critical Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) programs designed to help in species recovery.
