25 ARTWORKS IN VARIOUS LOC ATIONS IN THE CIT Y

Page 2: Artcity

KNOKKE-HEIST, ART CITY. Knokke-Heist has always had a passion for beauty: a nicely dressed plate in a Michelin-starred restaurant, a stylish window display in a flagship store of a well-known fashion brand, a nicely mixed exotic long drink in one of the beach bars, the leap of Flanagan’s ‘hare’ as the sun sets or the glass of sparkling wine served during the open house days of the galleries/art@Knokke-Heist.

ARTWORKS. ART VIEWS. This brochure provides an overview of the art that is exhibited in public spaces in Knokke-Heist. Visual artworks made of traditional materials such as granite and bronze as well as more recently developed materials such as synthetic resin or reflective stainless steel.

These are statues as well as cityscapes. Knokke-Heist’s heritage includes public squares which have been designed by architects in a collaboration with visual artists.

Visual art owned by the town or loaned by the owner, or art works on private property, which can be seen from the roadside.

Discovering each of these unique artworks is a pleasant way of exploring the art city of Knokke-Heist.

NEST (2003)

CLAIRE TODD (KINGSTON-ON-THAMES (UK)1971)

Todd trained at various academies in Great Britain and Europe. In 1999, she graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. She is a versatile artist and has directed films, practiced sculpture, costume design, drawings and print. She lives and works in Dundee, Scotland.

Work by Todd can be found at the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh, Kaapeli Helsinki and the Amsterdam Film Museum.

In April 2003, the artwork ‘Nest’ was inaugurated when the renovation of the small square in Bakkerstraat was completed. A structure similar to a foot basin with a fountain was installed in this intimate setting. The artwork itself is made of colourful ceramics. It represents a tree trunk with a bird’s nest, which contains several young birds with their beaks wide open. The artist envisaged that the children who live in the neighbourhood would play in the basin.

STANDING FIGURE AND TORSO (1999)

PHILIP VAN ISACKER (MECHELEN, 1949)

Philip Van Isacker (the son of author Frans Van Isacker) read law and art history at the University of Ghent. He subsequently became a sculptor, painter and conceptual artist. Van Isacker’s breakthrough as an artist came in 1986, when he participated in Chambres d’amis, the exhibition project that sealed Jan Hoet’s international reputation as a curator.

He uses materials that are not very resistant. Van Isacker establishes a special dialogue between simple shapes and materials and the surroundings.

Van Isacker is one of the few contemporary sculptors who starts from classic sculpture. He chooses not to finish his human figures, limiting himself to a few body parts or only showing the torso of a human figure. These two male figures, meditative sculptures, which have been crafted very cautiously, like a caress, look somewhat lost in the surrounding nature.

A FISHERMAN’S FRIEND (2009)

PETER ROGIERS (ANTWERP, 1967)

‘I started to draw as a young boy, but my family was not really art-minded. I only read comics. I learnt about the rest by going to the academy. I first took a graphic design course, but subsequently started to make sculptures.’

Excerpt from: ‘Hilde vraagt, 85 interviews with Belgian artists’ www.hildevraagt.be

Rogiers is a Flemish sculptor who also creates installations inspired by such artists as Francis Bacon and Franz West. In his work, he refers to the iconography of Pablo Picasso. He is also noticeably influenced by comics, underground culture such as B films and cult comics. Rogiers’s sculptures attempt to capture movements in their leaning, tortuous and lively poses.

For Beaufort03 (2009), Rogiers crafted an erratic sculpture in aluminium. The figure seems to emerge from the water, covered in marsh mud, or possibly seaweed. The title refers to the well-known mints.

DOWN IN THE WOODS TODAY (1988)

IRENE DROOGLEEVER-FORTUYN (GELDROP (NL), 1959) / ROBERT O’BRIEN (BROMYARD (UK), 1951 - AMSTERDAM (NL), 1988)

This artists’ collective, which used to gravitate between New York and Amsterdam, incorporated metal structures, which look like garden decorations or props, in natural surroundings. Both artists were mainly interested in the relationship between culture and nature. Their sculptures always strike up a dialogue with the surrounding landscape. They thus create a surprising element in the landscape, which can elicit child-like astonishment. Hence the titles, which are inspired by nursery rhymes.

This elegant cast iron and plexiglass artwork consists of two metal fence structures that are each 4 metres tall and 3.60 metres wide. Each fence weighs 100 kilos. The work adds a poetical note to the surroundings and invites the spectator to take a closer look at the surroundings.

TÊTE (2001)

JEAN-MICHEL FOLON (UCCLE, 1934 – MONACO, 2005)

Over the years, Jean-Michel Folon has become the figurehead of contemporary watercolour and sculpture art. As a result of his amazing artistic versatility, he has left his mark on the evolution and appeal of European art in the twentieth and the twenty-first century.

He was involved in a wide range of projects, designing theatre sets, making animated films and directing short films. He designed the logo for the bicentenary of the French Revolution and illustrated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Amnesty International Belgium. Folon also created stained glass windows and large murals. The man with the hat has achieved iconic status. From 1975 to 1983, this image was also used in the credits of the French public broadcaster, Antenne.

LIFEGUARD’S CHAIR (2003)

KRIS MARTIN (KORTRIJK, 1972)

Kris Martin (Kortrijk, 1972) is a conceptual artist who originally trained to be an architect. He uses different materials, including ceramics, stone and metal as well as found objects. Key themes in his mainly conceptual works are time and the fate of mankind.

‘Art is like a lasagne. When the top layer looks dismally grey, nobody feels like cutting into the lasagne and examining the layers beneath.’ Martin in Schamper, the student publication of the University of Ghent.

A simple Lifeguard’s chair, made of stainless steel and polished for an unparalleled sheen, along the shoreline, but facing the beach. The sculpture should be interpreted reflectively: ‘We need to continuously question ourselves in a constantly evolving world; the view of the endless horizons, and at the same time also a critical reflection. There’s nobody in the chair. Nobody can saves us. Only we can save ourselves, if we realise this on time.’

Martin’s work has been exhibited among others in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the White Cube in London.

EVA (1974)

EUGÈNE DODEIGNE (SPRIMONT, 1923)

Sculptor and draughtsman. Was trained by his father, a French stonemason. Dodeigne moved to France and studied in Tourcoing and Paris. Initially, his works have smooth surfaces. Around 1955, the artist discovered the quarry at Soignies in southern Belgium. In the sixties, his works became more expressive and rough and he was inspired by such artists as Alberto Giacometti and Germaine Richier. As of the seventies, his monumental sculptures started to pop in the public spaces of many cities.

One of Dodeigne’s more famous works is the monument on the site of the former concentration camp of Neuengamme near Hanover, which was inaugurated in 1989.

The work Eva, which is made of Burgundy stone, was installed near the Casino as a tribute to Gustave Nellens (1907-1971), the owner of the casino who also promoted Knokke-Heist.

WAVING CRABS (2011)

PANAMARENKO (ANTWERP, 1940)

Panamarenko, the pseudonym of Henri van Herreweghe, is an extraordinary artist and individual, who simply cannot be included in any category of contemporary art. His work is a combination of artistic and technological experiments. The outcome is always a spectacular and strangely beautiful structure, which is both playful and impressive.

The Waving Crabs installation consists of three floating islands. The largest is ten metres long, five metres wide and four metres tall. They have been made of narrow strips of high-quality reflective stainless steel and weigh in at more than two tons. The claws of the six colourful red crabs, made of stainless steel, wave in the wind. A wide gyre has been created next to the islands, which creates waves and a dynamic.

Panamarenko = contraction of ‘PanAmerican Airlines and Company’, one of the largest American airlines. It was founded in 1921 and filed for bankruptcy in 1991.

INTERIOR LIGHTING (2003)

INGO MAURER (REICHENAU (D), 1932)

Ingo Maurer originally trained as a typographer. Over time, however, he started to design light sources. In 1966, he moved to Munich and started to design his first light fixtures. He experimented very early on with LED technology.

One of Ingo Maurer’s best known and most iconic designs is the Bulb table lamp. Maurer’s designs can be found in various museums, including MoMa in New York.

To date, he has designed more than 120 different lights and lighting systems, which have also been produced.

‘As a child, I was always fascinated by light bulbs. I see them as the perfect embodiment of the encounter between industry and poetry...’

The ceiling lighting in the Scharpoord Cultural Center is made of five woven mats of 4 x 4 neon tube lights, in four different, bold colour combinations.

HEADS/ LEMURS (2004)

FRANZ WEST (VIENNA, 1947 – VIENNA, 2012)

Franz West is one of the leading contemporary Austrian artists. Initially, he mainly used papier-mâché. Subsequently he started to use polyester, and since the eighties he works with aluminium. He has represented Austria on various occasions during the Biennale di Venezia.

In 2004, Rubensplein was renovated together with the Belgian architect’s firm Robbrecht & Daem (Concertgebouw Bruges) and the Austrian artist Franz West. The Lemurs, which have been placed on pedestals, combined with the special design and tiling, have contributed to making this a very special artwork.

These are very physical heads, forms which have been kneaded from a primary mass, and which almost look carnivalesque. They have been made of a type of synthetic resin and can withstand the sea climate, the storms, the erosion by sand and the bright light.

In 2011, West received the Golden Lion at the Biennale di Venezia for his entire body of work.

TWO LARGE AVL MEN (2000)

JOEP VAN LIESHOUT (RAVENSTEIN (NL),1963)

Van Lieshout and his studio epitomise the ‘new artist’, the so-called hybrid artist, who combines an artistic practice with a professional structure and presents his work in various, very different ways: as art, as design, as architecture, as an individual or a company. Since 1995, he produces his work under the name Atelier van Lieshout (AVL).

Van Lieshout is mainly known for his polyester sculptures (3 to 9 metres high).

This super-individualist, as he is wont to call himself, has received several awards, including the Prix de Rome in 1992.

The two large AVL men meet and greet each other in the square. Their symbolic value is clear: a busy intersection for incoming, outbound and transit traffic. Because of their colour and the monumental aspect of this sculpture, the men have become a beacon in the town of Knokke-Heist.

NEON ARTWORK ‘UNTITLED’ (1999)

NARCISSE TORDOIR (MECHELEN, 1954)

Narcisse Tordoir is an influential artist with roots in the eighties when he pushed back boundaries, among others in the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels with art that was based on a clear and transparent plastic language, based on Magritte’s work. More recently, Tordoir’s endeavour is ‘to reinvent art’. He uses Photoshop to create a digital collage of a well-known work by a painter, such as the Venetian Rococo painter Tiepolo. The result is printed on canvas. Then Tordoir starts to paint on this canvas with oils or acrylics. The outcome is a highly recognisable painting, inspired by a historic work.

In the neon artwork ‘Untitled’, Tordoir preserves the freedom of the spectator to choose an interpretation. There is a certain sense of mystery: you can understand the figures but not explain them. Reason and emotion are harmoniously combined.

LICHTTOREN- PLEIN (2007)

GERT VERHOEVEN (LEUVEN, 1964)

The artist Gert Verhoeven and the architect’s firm E&L were commissioned to develop a concept for Lichttorenplein. It had to be a nice public space with a fountain, benches and an adapted replica of a nineteenth-century lighthouse to the north side of the square as premises for the tourist office. The square is dominated by colour: tiles in various colours, a pink fountain, steps and benches made of polished monoblocks.

The tourist office moved to Lichttorenplein along Zeedijk in October 2007. The old lighthouse, which dated from 1872, was demolished in 1954 but remembered in the concept of the main building. A lighthouse without a function, but a symbolic beacon for the tens of thousands of tourists who visit the tourist office to obtain information about our seaside resort.

IJZERPARK ALDRIK HEIRMAN (GHENT, 1966) JAN VERCRUYSSE (OSTEND, 1948)

Aldrik Heirman (Ghent, 1996) is a Belgian landscape architect and owns a tree nursery. Everything he designs first and foremost has to be viable. The design is part of the experience. Herman strongly believes in spontaneous growth. No forced selections here.

Jan Vercruysse (Ostend, 1948) is one of the most influential Belgian artists and an established sculptor. Vercruysse’s visual work mainly refers to architecture and the theatre.

IJzerpark is like a green lung near Dumortierlaan. The landscape architect Aldrik Heirman converted it into an undulating dune landscape. The sandy park is criss-crossed with sinuous paths and cosy corners where people can sit. Another feature of the park is ‘The Pleasure Garden’: a maze designed by the artist Jan Vercruyse. The labyrinth’s stark design and many water features are like a welcome albeit surprising breath of fresh air.

ROSE DES VENTS II (1995)

WIM DELVOYE (WERVIK, 1965)

Delvoye’s work is characterised by a strong interest in the traditional production process of craftsmen. Often irony plays an important role. He likes to provoke and confront. At the same time, his art is very serious and his creations often give cause for discussions. He plays a subtle game of meanings and associations. The pig, for example, originally lived in the wild and is a very intelliGhent creature. These days pigs have become an industrial product, a pale pink equivalent of the naked white man, a proverbial example of stupidity.

The ‘peeing angel’ in patinated polyester, which has been reviled and cherished by residents and tourists alike, in effect is a compass rose and fountain. Here again, the confrontation between religious kitsch and popular lewdness is apparent.

Wim Delvoye: ‘The more people badmouth my angel, the better. At least they look at it. People think it’s dirty, while excrement is actually hygienic. I can’t stand filth’.

TOMORROW MAN MADE BY THE SEA (2009) CATHERINE FRANÇOIS (UCCLE, 1963)

François studied communication sciences but has always been interested in many art forms, from portrait drawings and painting to sculpture. Since 1996, she has applied herself to sculpture. She mainly uses the lost wax casting process but likes to experiment with materials such as foam plastic, wood, textile of glass.

Many of her statues have holes. In choosing to do this, François wants to represent a destructive energy. The artist tries to reconcile extremes in her works. She wants to demonstrate that birth and destruction go hand in hand. Because everything is in constant flux. François tries to involve nature in her artworks, incorporating it in the sculpture.

The idea is that Tomorrow Man, which has been installed on a breaker, erodes and changes colour. The statue is literally exposed to the elements: the tides, the sun, the wind and the rain. The figure that is bent over weighs in at 400 kilos and is 2 metres tall. It braves the rising tide and the waves. And it is also a perfect example of the symbolism that François wants to express in her sculptures: man’s struggle against nature.

THE SEA, THAT AMAZING SCULPTOR (1989)

JEAN-MICHEL FOLON (UCCLE, 1934 – MONACO, 2005)

Folon loves Knokke-Heist. As a child, he used to spend his holidays here. For the statue on the breakwater, Folon was inspired by the work of René Magritte. But the man with the hat also resembles Inspector Maigret from Georges Simenon’s eponymous books. The name of the artwork was inspired by Marguerite Yourcenar’s essay about art, ‘Le temps, ce grand sculpteur’.

‘La Mer, ce grand sculpteur’, which has been installed on a breakwater, in a sense is modelled by the sea twice a day.

The Folon Foundation (2000) on the Solvay Estate in La Hulpe has about 500 works by the artist.

THE POET (1956)

OSSIP ZADKINE (SMOLENSK (BELARUS), 1890 - PARIS (F), 1967)

Ossip Zadkine, a French artist of Belarusian origin, became famous as a sculptor. However, he also created several lithographs and gouaches. His work was influenced by Cubism, Surrealism and African primitive art. His early creations are more introverted in shape and are characterised by a block-like structure. Over time, his sculptures became more fluid in terms of structure, thanks to the harmonious relationship between the volumes and cavities.

‘The Poet’ is a bronze figure which rests on square stone pedestals. The sculpture as the expression of the notion of the ‘singer of freedom’. The town of Knokke-Heist acquired the sculpture in the framework of the Zadkine exhibition of 1963 in the Casino of Knokke. ‘The Poet’ clasps Orpheus’s lyre against his chest; it is an ‘unfinished’ sculpture of a man, which was created from a knotty branch, featuring hieroglyphs/fragments from Paul Eluard’s poem ‘Liberté’.

SOCORRISTAS DE BIARRITZ X-X AURORA CAÑERO (MADRID (E), 1940)

Aurora Cañero has been working with bronze for over 30 years. She is a widely respected artist on the international art scene. She creates poetic and singular figures which inspire the onlooker to dream. Her sculptures exude a sense of peace, stillness, love, meditation and humour.

The art critic José Marin-Medina:‘Cañero’s work is surprising, it conquers and seduces the spectator. If you look at her sculptures, you will immediately notice the link with our culture’s visual and historic memory. At the same time, her works provide the impetus for an emotional process, pulling at your heartstrings.’

19 The statue is the property of the Piretti Art Gallery, Knokke. Can be found at 73, Sparrendreef.

DUNE INSTALLATION (2010)

ARNE QUINZE (GHENT, 1971)

Arne Quinze (15 December 1971) is a Belgian conceptual artist who is mainly known for his large, often controversial structures made of recycled wood. The installations have been devised to gather people and inspire a powerful dialogue. The purpose of the works is to elicit a response from passers-by, thanks to their interaction with daily life.

In the run-up to the tenth anniversary of Tomorrowland, the artist will build a permanent art bridge in the Provincial Estate De Schorre. Everyone can have a personal message lasered in the bridge and contribute to funding the bridge. The work has to be ready by June 2014.

The Ghelamco Group commissioned Dune from Quinze. This fluorescent orange/red wood structure is 38 metres long. Quinze extends the movement of the undulating dune landscape, incorporating it in his creation. Like the dunes, which always change thanks to the influence of the wind and the weather, Dune likewise changes, depending on how you look at it.

ANOTHER TIME XVI (2/5) (1995)

ANTONY GORMLEY (HAMPSTEAD (UK) 1950)

Gormley studied archaeology, anthropology and art history. He then went on to perfect his sculpture skills at various renowned institutions in the UK. Gormley has received several awards and prizes, including the Turner Prize in 1994.

Another Time is a multiple made of one of the moulds of the statue group ‘Another Place’ (2007), a permanent installation on Crosby Beach in Liverpool, where the River Mersey flows into the sea. The multiples pop up all in the most unexpected places, all over the world.

Gormley’s favourite theme: the contrast between the isolated human body and the great expanse of space in which it is installed. The statue is a stylised human figure, which is about 1.91 m tall. It is made of solid cast iron and weighs 630 kilos.

4 MONOLITHS (1991)

ULRICH RÜCKRIEM (DÜSSELDORF, 1938)

Rückriem initially worked as a stonemason, among others on the restoration of the Dom church in Cologne. As of 1962, he started to create abstract sculptures, using wood, steel and ultimately limiting himself to stone. Rückriem is more of a minimalist, choosing to concentrate on the essential characteristics of sculpture, i.e. dimension, volume, material, process, space and place. The artist lives and works in Clonegal, County Carlow, Ireland.

Rückriem’s preferred technique, which he uses most often, is to cut and split the stone along straight lines. This idea of working with these ‘fault lines’ is typical of Rückriem’s Minimal Art. The four colossal blocks which have been hewn from Austrian granite rocks together weigh 48 tons. The visible holes and fissures are normal traces of the sculpture process. The proportions are in accordance with mathematical principles. However monumental these works may be, they are in total harmony with the location where they have been installed. This four-piece puzzle can be reduced to one complete element.

HOSPITALITY (1990)

BARRY FLANAGAN (PRESTATYN (UK) 1941 – IBIZA, 2009)

Flanagan is one of the most remarkable figures in post-war sculpture. He is part of an even rarer group of contemporary artists whose work is understood by several layers of the population. His majestic bronze hares, which are installed in public spaces all over the world, are world-renowned. There is one in the dunes on the fringe of the Zwin plain, another on Park Avenue in New York, and in Grant Park in Chicago ‘the hares’ have even become a landmark.

The animal represents freedom, independence, dynamics, fertility, power and individuality. A hare, not a bunny, which one would expect to see in this biotope, is easy to integrate in our dunes.

‘Hospitality’ symbolises our very welcoming seaside resort. The locals call it ‘the king of the Zwin’, ‘Bugs Bunny’, or simply ‘the bunny’.

56

WESTERN (2009)

DIRK ZOETE (ROESELARE, 1969)

Zoete’s work mainly consists of drawings, scale models and installations. Often the scale models examine the interaction with architecture and the key elements of living and life. Energy (warmth, light, water), space and the landscape are investigated in less evident ways and sometimes used in an almost absurd manner.

The tower is a monumental intervention in the flat polder landscape. It has been built of 25 cm-long ceramic tubes with a diameter of 25 cm, the old sewage pipes. The artist’s aim was for this work to be “slowly” incorporated in the landscape and village, as is evident from its size (10 metres high, with a diameter of 6 metres) and monolithic aspect. The artwork’s name “Western” is a pun, referring to the tower in the west or a contraction of Westkapelle and toren or “torre” in local dialect.

30 WINDSOCKS (SINCE 2000)

GRIET DOBBELS (ROESELARE, 1964)

Griet Dobbels graduated from Sint-Lucas Ghent with a Master’s degree in the visual arts. Two years later, she obtained a Master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London. She also lived in Kyoto, Japan, as an exchange student for three months. Dobbels designed windsocks for our 9-km long zeedijk. They are similar to the windsocks used at airports. But Dobbels did not stick to the traditional red and white colour combination. Instead, she has designed windsocks in various shapes and fantastic colour combinations. Although the windsocks are made of weather-proof fabrics, they have to be regularly renewed by a specialised firm, based on new designs by Dobbels.

Location: the installations are on display in ten spots (3 windsocks per spot) along Zeedijk from the Easter vacation until after the autumn vacation.

MAKE YOUR DAY@ WWW.KNOKKE-HEIST.BE

Our seaside resort prides itself on having 30 artworks on display in public spaces, as well as 60 galleries in a 2 km² area that exhibit and sell art. Every first weekend of the easter, summer and autumn vacation, various galleries coordinate their schedules to organise an opening weekend.

ART@KNOKKE-HEIST: THE PERFECT CONCEPT FOR ART CONNOISSEURS AND AFICIONADOS OF THE FINE ARTS. Further information? Go to ww.artknokke-heist.be or www.knokke-heist.be>toerisme>publicaties

Art and antiques lovers make sure to attend ART NOCTURNE KNOKKE every year. This exhibition of ancient and contemporary art usually takes place around 15 August. A sculpture walk, called Sculpture Link Knokke, is usually organised simultaneously. The trail of monumental sculptures winds its way along Zeedijk to the banks of Zegemeer. Information: www.artnocturneknocke.be.
