Lemons are widely known for a number of qualities. For examle, lemon juice can be used to soothe a sore throat, season trout, or clean a countertop. Paired in just the right way, lemons enhance a dish, dessert, or drink with a simple squeeze or “hug.”

Only one question re-mains: What’s not to love about lemons? Go ahead, love your lemons and give them a little hug while you’re at it.

The essence of the lemon squeezer demonstrates the following modern societal values:

One cannot fully understand the origin of the lemon squeezer, without examining the origin of the lemon. The two are inextricably connected; the squeezer or other methods offered access to the lemon’s juice.

Arriving in Egypt from Asia, the Egyptians used the lemon for ceremonial, medicinal, and embalming purposes.

The ceramic press pictured above is similar to a relic used in Turkey in the 18th century. Ancient counterparts of the lemon squeezer can be speculated to have been as simple as one’s hand or a sharp object.

North American lemons and other citrus trees were brought over by Spanish missionaries. In the 15th century, it was discovered that lemon juice treated and kept away scury; a disease wide spread among sailors who lived long periods of time on foods lacking vitamin C.

The lemon has long been regarded as a fruit with medicinal value and many properties useful in improving one’s health. The lemon has been used since the Mesopotamian civilizations for its antiseptic properties. The lemon squeezer provides improved access to these health and anitseptic benefits. The lemon squeezer can be made using a number of non-stick materials including plastic, ceramic, glass and stainless steel. This tool is non electric and relies on leveraging the long handles to easily extract the desired juice while capturing pulp and seeds.
