This yearís poster art, “Fetch a Pail of Water,” marks the12th year that local artist, Richard DePaul has donated an origi-nal watercolor to the Junior Womanís Club ofWilliamsburg to support their fundraisingefforts.

“Since the annual Art on the Squareshow is held in April, I typically select a springtheme that highlights either one ofWilliamsburgís architectural gems or a moreintimate garden scene,” DePaul explains.“This yearís painting features a beautifullyproportioned well with a young woman, buck-et in hand, coming through the gate to fetch apail of water. The trees and shrubs show off their spring colorsof pink, fresh yellow-greens and burgundy — typical of April col-ors here in Williamsburg.”

Proceeds from the sales of raffle tickets for the original workand poster sales the day of the show provide art scholarships for

graduating high school seniors whohave been accepted into a college levelvisual or performing arts program.“An art scholarship gave me theopportunity to attend PhiladelphiaCollege of Art. It literally changed mylife. I am delighted to work with the Juniors to help potentially do thesame for someone else.”

Originally from the Philadelphiaarea, Richard and his wife moved to

Williamsburg in 1987. “We feel very fortunate to live in an area so rich with history andnatural beauty.”

Richard E. DePaul was born and educated in thePhiladelphia area. When a business opportunity present-ed itself in 1987, Dick and his wife were delighted to moveto Williamsburg.

His interest in art goes back to his elementary schooldays. “I knew since my initial ‘art project’ in first gradethat I wanted to do this when I grew up,” hesaid. His formal training began with Saturdayart classes at the Philadelphia Museum of Artin his early teens. It was at that time he begancombining his interest in art and his love ofthe outdoors, taking his oils along on hikesand stopping to paint the scenes that caughthis eye.

Upon graduation from Haverford HighSchool, Dick was awarded a scholarship to thePhiladelphia College of Art (now thePhiladelphia University of the Arts), where heearned a degree in Industrial Design. For the next 40years, Dick put his design skills to work managing designand development organizations for major paperboardpackaging corporations. He holds over a dozen patentsfor unique packaging concepts which he developed duringthis time. During this time, marriage, children and hiscareer took precedence over painting and drawing.

After he retired from corporate life, his wife gave hima set of watercolors for Christmas and told him, “Gopaint!” This revived an interest in his old “loves,” and hebegan the process of redeveloping his skills and technique.“My painting ‘style’ combines my love of drawing with mydesigner’s training: A good concept, plan, and executionresult in a successful product — in this case a painting,”says Dick. He combines his artistic understanding of color,

composition, perspective, and painting skills with thedesigner’s tools and techniques, resulting in what he calls“manipulated realism.”

His interest in history, architecture, and sailing, as wellas his love of travel, has yielded a variety of work whichfeatures Williamsburg, Tidewater Virginia, and favorite

travel destinations. As he explains, “I’ve achieved my objec-

tive if my work can be appreciated on morethan one level. I want the color and feeling ofa piece to allow the viewer to simply enjoy thescene. Then, as the piece is scrutinized, thosewith a particular knowledge of the subjectshould be able to further discern the degree ofdetail and precision. My goal is to provide anenjoyable visual trip through the ‘mini-scenes’within the work as a whole.”

Dick is pleased to be working with theJunior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg again this year. “Ascholarship permitted me to pursue my dream of workingin the arts, and I am delighted to team up once again withsuch a fine organization of ladies to help raise funds for artscholarships for the next generation of visual and per-forming artists,” he says.

2009 Arts Scholarship RecipientsWhere are they now?

Emily Kersey - My name is Emily Kersey, and I am a freshman dance major atthe University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Since I received my scholarshipfrom the Jr. Women’s Club of Williamsburg, I have been enjoying everything thatUArts has to offer. UArts offers degree programs in a variety of art forms includ-ing the performing arts (dance performance, vocal performance, instrumental per-formance, musical theater, acting, directing, producing, etc), visual arts (painting, drawing, illustration, sculpting, metal work, photography, graphic design, etc), andmedia and communication (including writing for film and television). It is amaz-ing to be a part of a community of students and administrators who share such apassion for their art! As a dance major the majority of my classes are dance class-es that take place in the studio. The rest of my classes are liberal arts, the majori-ty of which are closely related to my major. I was lucky enough to be cast in twosenior dance pieces this fall semester! Both were great experiences, and I cannotwait to perform again! I truly feel that UArts is the perfect fit for me and that itwill prepare me for my dream career as a performer. I am so grateful for thescholarship I received from the Jr. Women’s Club of Williamsburg, and for theopportunities and experiences that are yet to come.

Molly Korroch - I’m at Ithaca College pursuing a Vocal Performance degree.I am also in the midst of applying to the film school so that I may double major invoice and screenwriting. My classes are wonderful. I especially look forward tomy voice lessons during the week— my teacher is fabulous. I recently auditionedinto an upper level chorus for next semester— which I am very pleased and gratefulfor! This “Women’s Chorale” is going to be touring in and around Philadelphiain February. So, I am working very hard on catching up to everything theylearned last semester so that I will be ready for the coming performances! Ithacais fantastic— a very unique little town that my friends and I are enjoying getting toknow. It is, indeed, a special experience to consciously work toward a dream.

ART ON THE SQUARE is dedicated to providingan art show that offers original, high quality, handcraft-ed and diverse mediums of art. This juried art show istraditionally held in the spring on the last Sunday ofApril and is organized and hosted by an enthusiasticgroup of young women, members of the Junior Woman’sClub of Williamsburg.

Now in its 47th year, ART ON THE SQUARE isone of the club’s principal fundraisers to support commu-nity art initiatives. Proceeds from today’s booth rentalswill be donated to visual and performing arts organiza-tions to promote arts and cultural awareness throughoutthe greater Williamsburg area including Williamsburg,James City and York counties.

As a result of this show, we are able to support suchworthwhile organizations as the Williamsburg Symphonia,

This Century Art Gallery, Williamsburg Youth Orchestra,Stagelights, Williamsburg-JCC Fine Arts Program, EarlyChildhood Music School, Flute Frenzy and many others.

Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets and showposters support our Junior Woman’s Club of WilliamsburgArt Scholarships, which are awarded to talented localhigh school students to further their arts educations.
