Presentation Notes
Whether students (you) are enrolled in the school or as apply as an external student, students (you) will go through the same selection exercise. The selection exercise is designed based on various abilities or potential that talented students in art have. The selection also provides students (you) and (your) parents a brief sensing of how the students (you) will be able to handle the AEP curriculum. There’ll be 2 phases. In the first phase, student applicants will go through 2 activities: A drawing task where they need to draw what they see, such as objects or images. The focus here is not drawing skills per se but really on students’ ability to observe closely (e.g. see details, relationships). The creativity challenge will require students to create images or artworks according to certain ideas or themes, using images or material provided on the spot. The focus is on students’ creative thinking to think out of the box, to generate ideas and represent their ideas in drawings or materials. After this, shortlisted students will be invited to a short portfolio interview. At the interview, students will get to talk about Other artworks or art projects he/she had done or participated in (individually or collaboratively). If the actual artworks are not available, students can also bring good quality images of their works. why he/she is interested to be part of the AEP.

Presentation Notes
The selection for external MEP students will be similar as that for students within the hosting schools. Similar to AEP, Whether students (you) are enrolled in the school or as apply as an external student, students (you) will go through the same selection exercise. The selection process is to ascertain that the students (you) have an aptitude for offering Music as an academic subject. The selection also provides (you) students and (your) parents a sensing how the students (you) will be able to handle the MEP curriculum. There’ll be 2 phases. In the first phase, student applicants will take a selection test which comprises a theory paper with musical perception components. Through the theory paper, students will be able to demonstrate how they can apply their theoretical knowledge to analysis, performing and composing. Shortlisted students will then be required to attend a live audition and interview. For the audition, applicants will perform 2 contrasting pieces on an instrument or voice with a total duration of approx. 5 min. The pieces should be of an intermediate standard for both western and non-Western instruments. At the interview, students will get to discuss about The music he/she had performed or composed (if any) And why the student would want to be in the MEP. Through the interview, we hope that students would be able to show passion and commitment to be in a 4-year programme.

Are these Programmes for Me? Consider the following:

1. AEP/MEP Curriculum • How long? Four-year programme (Sec 1 – 4)

• What would I learn? In-depth study in Art/Music

making, performing, theory and history • When?

• AEP (NJC), Tuesdays, 3 – 6 pm • MEP [ACS (I)], Fridays, 3 – 5 pm • MEP (DHS), Mondays, 3 – 5 pm

Presentation Notes
How do you decide which programme is more suitable for you? Firstly, you look at the programme. [1] Duration. AEP and MEP starts from sec 1 and you are expected to stay in the programme and complete the four-year course. [2] Next, you have to think about what you would learn in the programme. AEP/MEP provides a more in-depth study into Art/Music making, performing, theory and history

1. AEP/MEP Curriculum • How long are the lessons? 3 hours (AEP), 2 hours

(MEP) each week

• What else? Exempted from Food and Consumer Education and Design & Technology due to extended time needed for AEP/MEP (possible implications on Upper Secondary options)

• Any examination? School-based exams each year and Higher Art/Music at GCE O-Level at the end of Secondary 4

Are these Programmes for Me? Consider the following:

Presentation Notes
One other thing to note is that For AEP and MEP, due to the extended curriculum hours for AEP and MEP, you will not need to take subjects like i.e. Design & Technology and Food and Consumer Education that all your other friends will take. This will have implications on your subject options at the Upper Sec. For example, you may have to work at catching up if you take these subjects at the Upper Sec *. Also, for both programmes, you are expected to sit for exams at various stages and the GCE O level at secondary 4. * NOTE TO SCHOOLS: We note that currently, some schools do provide additional support to help students catch up on subjects like D&T and F&N after a prolonged leave of absence, e.g. sickness, return from overseas, etc.

2. Time Management and commitment • Need to ensure that AEP/MEP lessons do not

clash with other school programmes & commitments

• Coping with extended lessons, additional projects and assignments

3. Distance • Travelling to and from AEP/MEP centres

Are these Programmes for Me? Consider the following:

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Other things to consider include the time. You need to ensure that the AEP/MEP lessons do not clash with other school programmes and commitments. As AEP/MEP is designed to stretch and challenge students’ abilities, you must be prepared to spend the time and efforts for the additional learning and the demand. You also need to think about the distance you need to travel from your home to the respective schools that offers the programme that you are interested. The time you need to travel, especially for students who are going to the AEP or MEP centre to take the programme as external students. These are on top of your own school work.
