Mozambique Day – Tuesday 21st May 2019

On Tuesday 21st May, Y7 students took part in Mozambique Day. We started off in the PC learning about Mozambique and hearing from Father David Brammer about his experiences during his visit to our partner school. We then sung the Mozambique National Anthem. Students then went into workshop groups which

included a range of subjects including House systems, Cooking, Clay-making, Humanities, Poetry, Drama, Art, Science, RE and Twyford Reporters. Students spent the day learning about life and culture in Mozambique before showcasing their work during period 5 in the PC. It was a joy to see the students positively engaged in Mozambique Day and inspired by ways they can make a difference. Mozambique Day has raised the students awareness of some of the challenges facing our

partner school in Maciene as well as the devastating impact Cyclone Idia has had on Mozambique this year. We hope this will encourage the students to raise money in the Sponsored Walk which will be donated to our partner school in Maciene as well as Tearfund Charity. Miss Adams, Father David & Mr Hickey

We raised £7213 last year….

Sponsored walk:The aim of sponsored walk day is for students to complete at least four laps of Gunnersbury Park, which is 2.4 miles long per lap to raise money for our partner school in Maciene, Mozambique. We will also be donating a substantial amount of the money raised this year to ‘tearfund’ charity, who are currently delivering emergency relief work in Mozambique following a devastating Cyclone in March 2019. If you would like to watch a short video of the work ‘tearfund’ are doing, please go to: www.tearfund.org.nz/Cyclone-Idai-Mozambique

We are encouraging students to raise a minimum of £20 each through completing sponsored walk day. Students can walk, jog or run the distance (with a maximum of eight laps) either in their house colours or fancy dress. Students can enter their Sponsorship money via ParentPay by Friday 28th June. We will then share the total raised per house and year group in the End of Summer Term assemblies.

Year 12 exchange to Lyon, France Over the Easter holiday I spent a week in Lyon with my exchange family, probably the biggest test to my A Level French speaking abilities so far!I have to admit, at first I was slightly nervous about the prospect of staying a week in the home of a family with whom I had only exchanged a few emails (but I immediately realised I needn't have worried as I felt immediately at home when I met them!) Upon arrival I was welcomed immediately and realised that I would be expected to speak in French for the whole of my trip - although this worried me at first it has greatly improved my speaking skills! I had a fantastic time exploring the beautiful city of Lyon, from visiting traditional museums such as “Musée des Tissus et des Arts Décoratifs” and the “Musée des Automates” where I saw hundreds of traditional mechanised puppets. These visits helped immerse me in Lyon’s rich history and culture. We also visited the Centre of Resistance and Deportation which was particularly interesting as it combined my studies in history with French. Of course, my exchange also took me round the traditional streets of Lyon where, surprisingly, the buildings are designed in Italian style, as well as spending some time visiting local shops. Overall, it was a fantastic trip for me as I not only got to learn about French culture (although drinking tea out of a bowl was slightly disconcerting!) but it also massively helped me improve my French through being immersed in the language. I was also lucky enough to have formed a fantastic friendship and I cannot wait for my exchange to return to London in the summer! Melina Geser-Stark

Cricket:• Cricket season is underway with the first

games of the season falling to Y10 who did a full day of Middlesex Cricket – unfortunately the 6’s never came! But ultimately the boys had a top day and finished in the top 5.

• The Y8 and 9s were next both teams played exceptionally well! Both teams winning their opening fixture against Brentside.

• Y7 have impressed on the field of play, but unfortunately that hasn’t translated into victories (yet!) losing both of their matches against Brentside and Dormers Wells – but with more matches after half-term all our fingers will be crossed for them!!

Athletics: Athletics has started with a BANG (pun intended!). Senior Boys and Girls teams narrowly missed

out on the borough championship win! Losing by 1 point to Drayton Manor overall, with the boys team finishing a solid 1st place for their respective points totals.

The same boys team soon headed off to the ESSA track and field cup finishing 2nd place behind St. Pauls at the halfway mark – but unfortunately fell to 6th place towards the end of the competition.

The junior girls team found themselves in a similar position finishing 3rd at the halfway mark but dropping to 5th at the end of the day.

We look forward to improving our game in further fixtures and events after half term.

Remember to come along to the Summer Sports clubs at lunch and afterschool including Rounders, Cricket, Tennis, Football, Cross Country, Athletics, Badminton

and Ultimate Frisbee!
