Adventures in Art: HONORING OUR PEOPLE

Fifth grade students from Auburn City Schools experienced authentic Alabama culture during the 19th annual

Adventures in Art program, held August 27 – 30 at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center.

Adventures in Art is hosted by the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department / Jan Dempsey Community Arts

Center and is partially funded through an art education grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. The

program is a field trip component of a community-based art education program.

This year’s theme was “Honoring Our People” where we focused on the history of Alabama people by highlighting

artists and performers of various backgrounds. The program began with a performance by a musical group from

Birmingham, the Steel City Jug Slammers. After the performance, students learned how to play washboards, jugs,

and wash bins. After learning about the musical background of Alabama, the students were able to view the

“Insider, Outsider” exhibition featuring Charlie Lucas. In this workshop, students were able to interact with Lucas

and ask questions pertaining to art and art making. In the visual art workshop, students were able to create faux

metal face sculptures inspired by the work in the “Insider, Outsider” exhibition.
