New Centre for Brain Health to unite research and patient care

Canada’s largest integrated brain centre officially opened on February 27, 2014,” uniting research and patient care to change

the way brain disorders are treated and studied.

The Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (DMCBH), a partnership between the University of British Columbia and

Vancouver Coastal Health, unites under one roof research and clinical expertise in neuroscience, psychiatry and neurology in

order to accelerate discovery and translate new knowledge into better treatment and prevention strategies. . The DMCBH is

home to clinics for Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression and other brain disorders.

Innovative programs that integrate research and patient care, led by Canada’s top researchers – including Canada Research

Chairs, BC Leading Edge Endowment Fund Leadership Chairs and a Canada Excellence Research Chair – will offer British

Columbians improved access to treatments and clinical trials.

The DMCBH will also house research labs in concussion, stroke, addiction and healthy aging, and serve as a venue for the

education and training of hundreds of medical students and graduate students..“

Happy Saint Patrick's Day – March 17, 2014 Saint Patrick's Day or the Feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on 17 March. It is named after Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland.

Post-Traumatic Stress and Acquired Brain Injury Workshop

Chuck Jung Associates Psychological and Counselling Services

Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association hosted a one-day workshop and Post-Traumatic Stress and Acquired Brain Injury in Abbotsford, BC on February 21, 2014. The DSM V Criteria for PTSD include;

have experienced at least one traumatic event Intrusion symptoms Avoidance of situations reminiscent of the event Negative alternations in cognitions and mood Alterations in arousal and reactivity symptoms must exist for at least more than a month traumatic event caused clinically significant distress or

functional impairment

As many people with brain injuries have sustained them during the course of a traumatic event, this workshop sought to compare the issues with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury and to offer some strategies on how to deal with PTSD symptoms. Some of the treatment options for Post-Traumatic Stress may include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy with a therapist who is trained in trauma, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) amongst other treatments. For full article, see upcoming Spring edition of the Headline.

John Simpson Editorial: These are the comments and thoughts of John Simpson not necessarily shared by the Board and the staff of Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association. Once asked how long rehabilitation lasted, his reply was, “A lifetime to get over the trauma of birth.” I very recently received an article, Dr. Sheldon Berrol: Champion of Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Disability Rights – D. Nathan Cope, MD, M. Elizabeth Sandel, MD, Cynthia Berrol, PhD, BC-DMT, Nathaniel Mayer, MD, Stanley Yamell, MD.

Reading this article brought back many cases I have been involved in with the late Dr. Berrol. The wonderful times I had driving him from one appointment to another when he came to evaluate some clients in BC and having lunch or dinner together. Shelly died suddenly December 31st, 1991, ironically of a ruptured aneurysm. His dedication and love of physical medicine and rehabilitation was immeasurable. He did not practice his profession within the four walls of an office or a whole hospital. He practiced his craft everywhere and I think he had a great love of getting people into the community and working in the community was very evident, at least to me. From the article I think this is well supported because of his involvement with Independent Living and Disability Rights. There was a 25 day sit-in in San Francisco and Dr. Berrol was the doctor on call during that 25 day sit-in. Dr. Berrol became the Associate Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Santa Clara Valley Medical Centre and later headed up the brain injury program. From Santa Clara he moved to San Francisco General Hospital where he remained right up until his untimely death in December of 1991. Dr. Berrol was a trail blazer in the development of teaching clinical programs but he also was successful in gaining funding for research programs which were based on both medical and non-medical models. He was instrumental in the setting up of community based day treatment programs funded by the Public Education System for patients with severe brain injuries at a community college in California. Everything that we know now about brain injury, rehabilitation programs and outcomes is due to the work done by Dr. Sheldon Berrol. It is a great pity everyone could not have heard him lecture, could not have talked to him, benefit from his wonderful worthy advice. The article I refer to was published the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Vol. 5, 907-914, November 2013. “Sheldon Berrol has a unique and distinguished place in the history of the field of PM&R, as well as other

rehabilitation fields. These words from a colleague capture the essence of his legacy: ‘ln a sense, Shelley's

contribution was not a specific theory or technique, but a way of thinking that shaped a professional field’

(personal communication, Leonard Diller, August 2013). He embodied the ideal of a humanistic, holistic, and

empathic physician who provided care but also advocated for the individual health care needs of his patients

and for their civil and human rights. With great dedication he undertook the mission that the f ield has carried

forward for decades and expanded that mission into another sub speciality area, influencing and inspiring

countless medical students, residents, fellows, and other colleagues. Years after his passing, his name and

photograph conjure up memories and anecdotes that demonstrate the love and respect that he garnered. His

enthusiasm, energy, and drive created collaboration among disparate professional groups and fostered the

development of new concepts, perspectives, and interventions for the field of BIM.”

Why bother taking out a membership? Your membership supports the activities of the Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association.

Each year, fundraising revenues have been dropping and FVBIA is finding it harder and harder to keep offering the same amount of programs as we have in the past.

We are counting on the support of our membership to help us maintain the same quality of service as we have over the past

sixteen years so please take the time to fill out the membership form and contribute whatever you can. Charitable tax receipts are available upon request.
